Au contraire!  I know almost nothing about how it's actually done, but I still know how I think they should and shouldn't do things.

In other words, why should the producer be telling the singer how to sing the lines?  The composer, sure, as he had a certain thing in mind when he wrote the song, and in DT's case the writers and producers are the same anyway, but why the producer or recording engineer?
That's the producer's job. That's what a producer does - makes creative decisions in order to make the songs as good as possible. It's the musical equivalent of the director.

That or I'm very confused...

As someone producing an album myself...thank you.  Not many people are aware of the producer's role or the difference between a producer and an engineer, as well as many things about the tracking and mixing processes.

It's very extensive.  Depending on how much time you spend in the studio per day, I wouldn't call 2-3 songs each day unrealistic (if the singer is nailing their takes).  But to have one song done, lead, harmonies and all, one per day, I can definitely see why that would be considered fast.

Okay that status is back now.  For some reason it just sort of disappeared for a few hours.

Was watching Score yesterday and James singing that Majesty song was bloody great. I realised I missed him doing that highish (technical term) register with plenty of vibrato in DT. The last few records have tended to be a little lower in register without much vibrato. At least that's my impression. Hope he wails a bit more on this record, although he can do little wrong for me. :)

With MP and his whole "high-pitched vocals are dated" mindset out of the picture, I'm hoping we'll get glimpses of the old JLB. But I'm not holding my breath, it's likely "modern" vocals are here to stay.

At least we'll get some good vocal harmonies:

From twitter:

@chadtoney: @Piratecjs we gonna get any James-on-James vocal harmony action in the new tunes? Hope so!

oh yeah you will

Yep, just finished layering my harmony on JLB's. You could've just asked me mang

Wondering if JP is there producing vocals or if James will self-produce his vocals. From what it seems, they are in Canada (him and Rich) recording. Rich and James went to the Rush concert at the Copps coliseum or something like that.

That's cool and all, but I'm sure every album has had that.

I hope we get to hear them counter-melodic vocal sections that DT doesn't do much of. Don't look past me has some of that stuff, and it sounds great  :tup

I think, lately, Portnoy and Petrucci have done the backing harmonies a lot more often than they used to. Presumably so the songs will be a little closer to the studio versions when played live.

I'm certain he's always done at least some of the harmonies, though.

Yeah that was what I meant. So we don't know whether there's going to be more James-on-James harmony, just that there will definitely still be some.

QuoteHi All,

Sorry I haven't been around, especially since the recent turn of events. Yes, MM is our drummer and we are psyched to begin on this new musical adventure.
Those of you who thought I am in Canada recording my vocals are correct. I am having a blast recording with Rich. We have been doing this recording thing off and on with one another for the last 24 years.
I am heading back into Rich's studio today to begin vocals on the 5th song. Can't wait for everyone to hear the fruits of our labor.

Have a great day and see you around on-line,doing fine.

Sounds great!

Also, I think the final "Raaa...aaawk" before the album release might get two lines long.

May be a daft question but who is Rich? :P Is it Chycki?

Very interesting, and very different from the last few DT albums.  I'm sure JP's giving back notes on the recordings, but I really appreciate how the band is trusting JLB to know what he's doing with the vocals and deliver quality.

The recording process for this album, to me, is so much more conducive to producing quality music than the last few.  I hope the results live up to that.

Maybe they listened to how he sounded on the solo album :)

Just seen on JLB's forum it is indeed Richard Chycki.

Yeah.  That and the BCSL covers disc, which is so much more compelling vocally than the actual album.

You think they do? I didn't fully understand that from the quote (probably just me being dumb), but if it's true, I sure hope so. James composed brilliant vocal lines in the past.

I love how James is taking time between recording of each song. There was quite a gap between the announcements of "just finished 4 tracks" and "I'm now beginning the 5th track".

Aniland

THE 5TH SONG. THAT'S THE ONE I SAID WOULD BE THE BEST. Go look at Ricky's sig.

But really, the fact that these songs are recording so often... it tells me there's gonna be a lot of them.

I agree.

I agree as well, but remember that we're talking about two different kinds of vocals here.  Covering songs is, in some sense, easier because the melodies and a conception of what listeners expect are already there.  A good cover singer will find the right balance between singing the song the way people are used to hearing it and giving it some of his own personality.

With original DT material, the melodies are whatever the writers, producers, and JLB come up with in the end.  I personally think that that would be more difficult, and in JLB's case and his situation with DT, is what results in somewhat emotionless presentations.  Don't get me wrong; I think his voice is great and still getting better, but it's been a while since something he sang has really given me chills like the early days.

FretMuppet

Well, at least we know there's going to be 5 or more songs!  :tup

tri.ad

Which isn't saying too much; the new album could end up with 6 songs, making it another album with the least amount of songs (tied with SDOIT and BCASL).

I'm hoping for eight or nine songs.

Tomislav95

They took enough time to make album with more than 6 songs. I hope there will be more.
But better 5 good songs than 10 bad :D
