Who's Mike Mangini?

Quote from: Dream_Theater01 on March 29, 2011, 07:20:23 AM
I'm unfamiliar with Mike Mangini.

Former drummer for James LaBrie solo projects.  Mangini was always in the back of my mind as the most likely Portnoy replacement.

BTW, could the "reliable source" in this case be MP himself?
Doubtful.  How would MP know?
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

If Eddie Trunk is really in the know, it's a dick move on his part.

No it's not.

I wish I could metaphorically skewer every single person who believes newsman are responsible for upholding whatever image whatever party they're currently covering wishes to have portrayed.

Eddie's giving us a rumors he's heard, which I'm sure are on at least respectable grounds. He's a professional, not some douchy guy who just wants to stir things up. Thank god someone in the news portion of the industry finally has the balls to actually do their job, and go out and find out what's going on-- even if it's as little helping circulate a rumor or something. Again, if this is what Eddie's heard I'm sure he wouldn't say it if it didn't come from a very respectable source. Assuming otherwise is, honestly, If the band don't like it, it really has no bearing on whether Eddie's in the right or not.

Go Eddie. Be that awesome heavy-metal radio personality you are  :tup

A professional's job is to spread an unconfirmed, by his own admission, rumor?  This reminds me of when ESPN's guys talk about unconfirmed rumors, so if they turn out to be true, they can say they were the first one to break the story.

Cool, nothing surprising, but cool. Manginni would actually be a nice fit, after finally being able to watch vids, he has the personality.

"By his own admission" is why it's perfectly acceptable.

And yes, it's very professional when your profession is basically bullshitting about heavy-metal for the entertainment of others. I mean that with all due respect, too.

You can accept it, I don't. There's NO way it was done by chance. It was all done on purpose. MP is probably not in the know, but Eddie is his friend, hence the move. ALL in my humble opinion, of course.

I'd be perfectly happy with Mangini, it's who I've suspected/hoped for since a few weeks after MP's departure.

Eddie doesn't gossip like this normally so I'll guess the DT guys gave him the info.

From Facebook. He obviously doesn't like talking about it.

The obvious alarm is at maximum intensity.

Not excited at all, i just hope he brings it...

Mangini always made the most sense. He's American, from the same area of the country as the rest of the guys, and about their age. That's why I thought they would choose him, at least.

Compadre

From JP.com's Admin (Paul Warren):

I've discussed this with JP (as far as posting links here where Blabbermouth or others claim they have the scoop etc) and then having a massive discussion about how he'll fit in etc. and we're just not going to do that here. It's unfair to those guys mentioned because then they are besieged with congratulatory emails and other drummers are asked why they didn't get it even though they auditioned etc. This has already happened to one or two other drummers, so now there are what, 3 drummers who people are certain to be in DT?  Again, I don't know who the drummer is, but we'll wait for the OFFICIAL word from DT. Thanks.

I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion after reading the post.

Bertielee

What if the Eddie Trunk's "leak" was a joke at our expense, preparing for April Fools?

B.Lee

TheMadgician

What if it was tactical disinfo to lead us off the trail of the real drummer?

Yeah, take that >:C

I'm not familiar with Mangini at all so I spent my lunch hour YouTubing some vid of him. Seems like he'd be a good fit. The fact he's worked with James in the past gives him an edge it'd seem. It's been mentioned here before and over at MP's site that no matter who the drummer is he is going to be constantly compared to MP....it'll be never ending for the guy. That had to be an immediate question from the DT guys. Can you handle the shadow you'll be living in? Mangini (from what I saw) appears to be a pretty cool and confident fella who probably could/would give a rats ass as to what the "fans" will say about him...good and bad.
He's a super talented guy who undoubtedly has the skills nescessary to pull off MP's catalouge (maybe even put his own stamp on some songs as JR has done) and create some killer songs of his own. Before we know it we'll all have DT's new music blaring in our ears and these threads will give way to everyone criticizing the mix or flavor of tooth paste they noticed JLB using in a video update.

rumborak

To me, Mangini has been the obvious option. Just not the preferred one.

rumborak

He's not the best option for me either, but the guy can really adapt to the style of music he's playing on, whether it be JLB's, Vai's or whatever. I'm sure he will easily adapt to the demands of DT's.

B.Lee

MykeHavoc

How were so many of you unfamiliar with Mangini? I mean, hasn't be been pretty much the most obvious choice all along?

Aramatheis

I know next to nothing about Mangini, but from what I've seen, he fits the bill very well.
After youtubing him a bit, and watching the video of him on Time Warp, it also seems like he's a pretty cool dude, with a good sense of humour.

If this "leak" turns out to be true, I'd be pretty happy with DT's decision. Looks like a good match to me.

That video is pretty neat. Seeing what a drum head and cymbal look like when hit in slow motion is pretty unreal. Actually...anything in slow motion looks pretty friggin' cool.

One of life's few absolute truths, my friend. I wonder if there are any super slow-mo videos of people getting punched in the face?
Those would be fun to watch
