I know it's probably a pretty tired conversation topic (going by the other posts in this thread) but I'm new so cut me some slack.

I still don't get why Mike thought that all the psychedelic effects and stuff was a good idea. It doesn't add anything to the DVD - it actually takes away from it - and it's annoying as all hell. I especially dislike when there's a really cool part that I want to watch, like a solo or something, and it's like, having to share a screen with this annoying visual effect. While I thought the split-screen between the band members for some of the busier sections was a cool idea, I don't like the other stuff MP threw in.

Because it was 2001 and adding effects to your video back then was SUPER KEWL

Basically that.  And add to that fact the context of:  This was during the time period that DT had just taken back full control from the label and were very much of a mind that they were going to do what they wanted to do without any interference or input from anyone outside the band, and this was the very first video they had ever self-directed and self-produced.  So, in short, they had a new ultra-independent attitude driving them, but were novices in terms of video direction and production.  If they could re-do it, would they probably get rid of a lot of that stuff now?  I suspect they would.  But, honestly, I don't think most people consider it to be that big a distraction.

What I don't like about the DVD is the 1928's murder scene where the killer use a 1992 pistol. Huge mistake.
I don't think I would've noticed that if MP hadn't pointed it out. I know like nothing about guns though.
i've always thought it was Colt 1911

Should have been, but it's a Beretta 92.

I think the timing of it (ie 2001) isn't an issue at all.  MP went crazy cuz he just discovered how "easy" it is to add effects and nonsense to videos from a desktop computer when they are generally edited on a professional system.  Tools that were once really only available in studios and big-budget equipment can now be done by Joe Average.

Photo slideshows are a good example of this and I see it all the time.  Someone gets a program and starts taking their photos and putting them together.  They go way overboard with cheesy effects and transitions.  After "showing off" for their first bunch of projects the NOVELTY of it all wears off and they start reducing how many/often effects they're going to use and settle in to basically using crossfades and gentle motion effects and only use oddball effects occasionally to emphasize certain things.

So, MP was basically a kid-in-a-candy-shop and just wanted to throw everything he could, and for subsequent video projects he did them "properly" and professionally.

This happens to just about everyone when they discover something new, including myself, but you get over it after a while.
