What's your favorite DT Epic or long song (since some here dont consider certain songs 'epics')

IMO these are the selections.

A Mind Beside Itself
A Change of Seasons
Trial of Tears
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
In The Name of God
Octavarium
In The Presence of Enemies
A Nightmare to Remember
The Count of Tuscany

The Twelve Step Saga does not count for the purposes of this discussion because i want this thread to be about whole songs, or at least parts of a suite written at one time (not over the course of 7-8 years)

on further analysis, Trial of Tears has been added to the list

Please mention another favorite of yours and why (i dont want this to be a boring thread)

Mine is a toss up between Octavarium and SDoIT (Though ACOS and ANTR get a good amount of play for me, but i love all these tracks)

LieLowTheWantedMan

aCoS is the best them.

Also, about the brackets, I think a song is an "epic" if it has an epic feel to it. I've never been a fan of using the term "epic" to describe all long songs.

Right that's what i was trying to clarify. Technically Metropolis pt 1, Learning to Live, Trial of Tears, The Best of Times, Sacrificed Sons, and Finally Free sound epic, but dont quite have the length. Whereas The Glass Prison, Home, Endless Sacrifice, and many many DT songs have the length, but arent necessarily strictly 'epic'.

Yeah, pretty much.

Lately its The Count of Tuscany, thats just an amazing song. Love the lyrics, love the instrumentals.

So its basically a tie between Octavarium & The Count of Tuscany.

Infinite Cactus

A Mind Beside Itself Suite or Octavarium

Trial of Tears.  I'm not sure why that's not on your list when ITNOG is only a minute longer (when we're talking about longer songs as epics in this case). :P

i know what you're saying, but i also left out Learning to Live (which combined with Wait For Sleep is about 14 minutes) and The Ministry of Lost Souls, both are very epic but they're not as long as the others. And with In The Name of God, i always felt it has that 'longer song' feeling. I feel like Trial of Tears; along with Hell's Kitchen/Lines in The Sand, and The Best of Times, are those longer cuts that feel like a solid 6-7 minute run.

A Change Of Seasons or In The Name Of God. Really all of those are among their best, except A Mind Beside Itself (well it's good, but no song really stands out as amazing for me and it's not that great as a whole, just three decent but different songs).

ACOS / INTOG
Octavarium / ITPOE / TCOT
Six Degrees
ANTR
A Mind Beside Itself

For me anyway. Only a few great songs are anywhere near the best (top 5 in my list) of their "long songs" (Metropolis, The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Learning To Live, Blind Faith, Endless Sacrifice, Take The Time, Home, etc.)

blackngold29

A Change of Seasons is my favorite overall DT song.

This. Out of these epics, A Mind Beside Itself is the second choice for me.

Octavarium.

yeshaberto

six degrees followed closely by octavarium

RoeDent

So if our favourite is ACOS or 8VM, we can't mention it? OK, I won't.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence followed by Octavarium!
A Change of Seasons and In the Presence of Enemies are also up there  somewhere.

In the Presence of Enemies is further up on my overall list than many others'. I actually like many of the parts that people bring out as the worst...

In the Name of God is a lot further down on my overall list than many others'. I think it's a bit boring and overrated...

I also think that TCoT is a lot better than ANtR.

Have never thought of A Mind Beside Itself as one song...

One can argue day and night about which songs that are Epic/Long, but it's certainly difficult to set the limit that pleases most fans.

MykeHavoc

I don't agree with 12 Steps not being allowed. That being said, I guess ACOS is still the classic epic.

Lowdz

6DOIT for me. but I love all those on your list, and the ones left off. Even DT's short songs sound epic to me.

hefdaddy42

Not sure why ANTR is on that list.  Or AMBI, for that matter.

At any rate, ACOS is the king.

Sorry, I'm going to be boring.
Octavarium followed by ACOS then at the minute it would probably be TCOT, but that's likely to constantly keep changing.  :)

Knguro

BanksD

Octavarium
6DOIT
The Count of Tuscany

my 3 favorites.

well i just wanted to talk about individual long songs. i dont consider 12 steps ONE song, whereas SDoIT is IMO. Plus there's a separate thread for the 12 step suite

ANTR is one of their longest songs, and i think it's epic. Darker than usual, but epic.

i dont necessarily feel AMBI is, but some do. But hey some dont think SDoIT is, but i do  :-\

Kosmo

I actually think that i like Count the best from those.

hefdaddy42

I don't see anything "epic" about ANTR.  The beginning is straightforward metal, then there is the Beautiful Agony section, then the overlong third section.  Nothing epic there.

But hey, whatever.

This.

MykeHavoc

Well if we're getting picky, In the Presence is split into two, and 6 Degrees is cut up into 8, yet we consider them both to be one song each.

whos getting picky? both those songs were written as one and performed live as one. they just happen to be split into separate tracks on the studio albums.
