Wonder why he didn't make mention of MP being at NAMM this weekend? Are things really that tense where they can't even "run into" each other at the same event?

Man, I'm listening to the band in JR's last Facebook update. Good god, could one sound more generically prog than that?

rumborak

You mean the band that keep tagging him in their unrelated videos? Yeah, they really suck. I want to 'comment' some negative things on their video next time so they stop. They also tag a bunch of other artists in their videos.

Either way, hearing some Klingon battle music would be pretty EPIC on the next album.

Actually, it's very probably that they just happen to not run into each other. It's huge there, and they may not have even been there the same day, none the less the same time.

Portnoy doesn't groove on Shabbos.

kirbywelch92

There are over 80,000 people at NAMM every year, I'd say it's possible for them to miss each other.

tri.ad

This. Also, I'm sure that the NAMM has areas for their respective instruments, and I'm not too sure why JP or JR should show up in the drum department.

Daso

Uhh... maybe to say hi to the guy that was a bandmember and friend for 25 years?

Oh and btw, I love the Minneman and Portnoy picture. It might be a picture of the old and the new.

tri.ad

Judging from what we've seen and heard about it all, I wouldn't be surprised if the relationship between MP and DT wasn't at their best level right now, so not showing up wouldn't come as that much of a shock, to be honest.

Mladen

Maybe it's an older interview. In the one he's done in the last week of 2010. he clearly said ''We've got a guy.''

jdprsaga

maybe something went wrong after he said "we've got a guy" and that's why they haven't revealed who the new guy is.

maybe what went wrong was that the new drummer got injured in the feet/heel/whatever..  and they are deciding if asking somebody else or wait for him

rumborak

Yeah, I can't help but thinking that something went wrong too. It's been such a long time since the announcement that they had found their drummer. Legalities can only serve as an excuse for so long.

rumborak

lordxizor

I also am worried something is wrong. Though in the long run it probably doesn't matter. Even if their first choice backs out or something, there are still tons of great drummers out there. IMO, the worst thing that could happen is that they let Mike back in or are forced to for legal reasons.

rumborak

Ugh, then they might as well call it a day.

rumborak

Mladen

Well, they're not doing that, they're already in the studio.  :metal

Yeah, if they didn't have their guy they would not be in the studio.  They would have definitely postponed it.

Or they've been working on the other parts in the studio and were going to have the drums put in later. That's pretty common.

7StringedBeast

So you think they would record all their parts without drums and then just put the album on hold indefinitely until they found a drummer, giving them no one to jam with on the material at all?  Write the entire album without hearing drums?  I highly doubt it.  Too big a potential for wasted money and studio time.  I don't see why they would ever enter the studio without having a drummer in the band.

DreamerTV

Let me summarize all:
- "what is going to happen?"
- "is mike going back?"
- "who are the 7 guys?"
- "are you holding it wrong?"
- "is it Minnemann?"
- "is it Mangini?"
- "is it Lang?"
- "is it Bosk?"
- "isn't anyone?"

Just because timing is not what you want it to be, doesn't mean there's something going wrong.

Also, I think their usual workflow has been drums -> bass -> guitar -> keys -> singing. Might not be an unbreakable law, but...

In terms of recording or writing? It's standard practice to record drums first to a click track so that the rest of the band can play along to the drum track. But I can't imagine anyone stars writing music with drums.

I don't think them being in the studio necessarily means the drummer is there too. DT have been making the studio their rehearsal space for the last few albums, so they might just be sitting there over their equipment and trying out stuff.

Ben_Jamin

But if you want to jam some metal you need a drummer.

7StringedBeast

If they write while jamming, they are going to want a drummer there.  Wasn't that how ToT was written?  They all got together and jammed.  I don't know how any band could write good songs without hearing how the drums are going to affect the song.

Well they could do something like Devin or Arjen and write everything and program all of the drums, then when actual recording commenses, the drummer just learns (and spices up) the parts laid out in the programmed drums.

But that REALLY doesn't sound like a DT move.

Paul Gilbert's Get Out Of My Yard and Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar were both recorded with the drums tracked last, but this was due to him recording it mostly at home.

He's also a solo artist. For solo artists, it makes a lot of sense.
