The count of tuscany is perfect except for one thing.

I love this song but the part I really hate is where they sing "I I don't want to die"  I cant stand how jarring it is.   I am guessing that this is a Portnoyism.   I wish James would have just sung it
normal instead of yelling it with some sort of distorted sound.   One thing I recently found out that is really cool is that it is JP playing that slow solo part.   I always thought it was Jordan playing on his continuum like he did at the begining of Octavarium.     I now rank that as one of J.P's best solos.

SnakeEyes

It's such a goofy song that I just can't take any of it seriously.

Moonchild

the lyrics are what detracts the song..because it's just silly.

The "I don't wanna die" part is passable.. because it builds the song into a musical orgasm.  :tup

Let me introduce MY BROTHAAAA!!  >:(

I have no problem with this statement but what is the one thing that is a perfect example of?

The vocal melodies in the chorus, including the yelled out "I!" are pretty cool.  I like the lyrics too.

What I don't understand is the rest of it.  The silliness undermines the intensity of it.

The coolest section of the lyrics is actually the second verse.  By just describing the weird things going on, like a dead body sitting out and the collection of rotting corpses in the basement Petrucci might be joining, it creates this sense of creepiness about it.

axeman90210

I really like that part, one of my favorite uses of Portnoy backing vocals on the album

VioletS16

Music is cool, especially the intro, but the lyrics are stupid and I don't like the way it's sung.

MY BROTHER

is stupid.

I'm over the lyrics, but the middle section (verses and chorus) isn't too great IMO.  Still really like the song though, definitely BC&SL's stand-out track.

Heretic

I really love the Count of Tuscany, it's got a lot of incredible parts to it. I admit the lyrics are pretty cheesy, though.

I like the lyrics at the ending, though.

Am I the only person who think this part is very good?  ???

No I love that part too, it's powerfull, I like it

Ben_Jamin

The verses do suffer with the way the vocals are delivered. But the rest of the song is great especially the acoustic build-up the best thing DT has done.

bloop

The intro is much too good for the rest of the song. Also, if DT had cut out all the ROROROMETAL stuff and consolidated it into an 8 minute song it would be better in my mind. To me it feels like it shouldn't really be an epic.

tjanuranus

I think the lyrics are intentionally that campy. Kinda why i like it. It's different. They are over the top on purpose, like a Grindhouse movie.

I don't even really consider it an epic but that's my personal disappointment with the songwriting and subject matter. The intro is great and I really like the E-bow/volume swell solo but aside from that the only thing that might make the song an epic is the fact that they wrote enough sections to stick together to make it 19 minutes long.

Man, I LOVE The Count of Tuscany, and I've thought the chorus was awesome since the first time I've heard it. If anything, I was a little disappointed that they couldn't pull off that sound live. That is - I *would have* been disappointed, had the song not kicked so much ass.

jsem

The music is some of the best of DT - but the lyrics aren't worth mentioning.

Silly lyrics =/= bad lyrics

I don't think it was JP's intention to ever make the song "silly". Which is what makes it so hard to listen to (the lyrics).

He's said repeatedly that the point of the song was tell a story he's told other people many times. At the time he was pretty scared, but looking back on it he's said the whole situation was just "weird" or "bizarre." It's like "hey, this scared the crap out of me but, really, wasn't the whole thing just ridiculous?"

I still can't grasp how people actually think JP was trying to invoke honest to goodness fear or suspense with lines like "smoking on his pipe," "HISTORIAN," or "all the finest wines improve with age."

orcus116

Even if it was all ridiculous you don't make that the subject of a song that tries to take itself seriously. There's just something inherently lame about marrying the two.

ehra

*shrug* I never got the feeling that it was "taking itself seriously" until the end when the guy's basically saying "I'm not going to kill you, stop being such a damn noob" which is why that's the only part that make me cringe a bit ("Now wait a minute, man").

antigoon

I was always able to reconcile the silliness of the lyrics with the serious nature of the music. I think it's a great song.

Metabog

How can you not like MAH BROTHA. I mean, he's a GENTLEMAN and a HISTORIAN ffs, and that's NO ACCIDENT either. Not everyone gets to SUCK ON HIS PIPE with a nice DISTINGUISHED ACCENT. Show some respect.

juice

When I first heard the "I!" part I thought it was awesome.  The whole song is awesome, one of their best.

genome

Only part I'm not a fan of is the pointless section before the big solo at 10 minutes. It sounds awful!

DarkEternalNight

The "MY BROTHER" part makes me laugh every time I hear it so I love it.

ddtonfire

This song would be just silly with serious lyrics. It would come off as overbearing and insincere. I can't think of a topic fitting to the music. I think it's their best song as is.

i am fabio

This is one of my top 5 songs from them and for the most part I dig the lyrics. I think people who don't are maybe a little too serious or take themselves to serious?  haha anyways it's a really cool fun song.

It does have a few spots in the lyrics i'd change but whatever.

Yazman

What the hell, there's people who don't like The Count of Tuscany? Its one of my top DT songs, brilliant in every way. Whats with not liking LaBrie? WTF?
