I was thinking...do you guys think that DT will avoid playing songs that Portnoy wrote the lyrics to on the next tour?  Some songs seem very connected to him like any song from the 12 step suite, or Honor Thy Father, New Millennium, Constant Motion(hopefully they retire that one).   I know some might say that they didn't do that when Kevmo left but, at the time they didn't have the back catalog to choose from (like now) to pick and choose some stuff.  Plus their biggest hit,Pull Me Under, and some of their best songs came from Kevmo...not necessarily a problem with the portnoy tunes.   :-X

Ħ

I don't see them playing the twelve-step suite in it's entirety, nor do I see them playing The Best of Times.  But that's really it.

As I Am

I think along the same lines. I don't think they'll play any Portnoy lyrical songs on the next tour. I'm also thinking that we won't get "An Evening With..." on the next tour either. :tdwn

PlaysLikeMyung

This argument is stupid. There are SO MANY SONGS he wrote lyrics for it'd be hard to not play them.

The only song I can see them not playing for that reason is The Best of Times. That may, like Space-Dye Vest, remain unplayed live.

Aniland

I can deal with that. I hope that A Change of Seasons isn't retired, but I think it is just as likely to be.

well i didn't really mean unplayed forever, just maybe on this first tour w/o Portnoy.  Hopefully they pull out some old stuff that he never wanted to put in the setlist.  Hell, even seeing You Not Me live would be cool, just for the fact that it is something different than the normal stuff lately.  Sorry to get off topic.

Ħ

It would be cool do have an old-DT-driven tour, but I remember JP saying that he doesn't like playing older stuff.  I think Mike was a big reason they delved into their more unusual songs, and played stuff like the demo versions of HY and LitS, for example.

Do you remember why JP said he doesn't like playing old stuff?

cyberdrummer

I think it was just Majesty and WDADU that he didn't like playing. Not sure why.

Because he thinks it is a little dated and amateurish-sounding.

And for a lot of it, he's right, especially the Majesty stuff.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

blackngold29

Perhaps the obviously ones would be avoided (best of times, 12 step), but like PlaysLikeMyung says there would be too many to completely avoid them. I could see them maybe doing a few acoustic things, which might cut back on the drumming crazyness, but I wouldn't like all acoustic.

PlaysLikeMyung

I don't think he'll give up all the songs just because Mike's no longer in the band though. There will be far less obscurities played, but they'll still play them, I think

Aniland

I wonder how they would do a song like, say, Constant Motion, where Mike's vocal presence makes up a great deal of its content.

That's a good point, I hadn't even thought of his vocal absence.

My money's on JMX filling in.

Mladen

Talking about MP songs, what struck me yesterday is that they might stop playing some of his songs, and I can deal with never hearing some of the 12 steps suite and The Best of times. But the song that I really want the band to keep playing is The Mirror. In fact, I want that song on the next live DVD with the new drummer - James just nails some of the lines perfectly, it would be a shame not to have that track on an official DVD.

Since when is LSFNY not official?   :justjen

fadetoblackdude7

12 Step Suite, Honor Thy Father, and The Best Of Times....retired. (Thank God I heard HTF already  :metal)

A Change Of Seasons ehhhhh.........maybe only be played in really special occasions. (30th anniversary?)

All others I don't see a problem with them playing.

MemoryScenes

'Never Enough' probably wouldn't help build fan rapport. I think the last thing DT wants to do right now is whine about their fans.

Adami

The Mirror
A Change of Seasons
New Millenium
Burning My Soul
Just Let Me Breath
The Glass Prison
War Inside My Head
The Test that Stumped Them All
Goodnight Kiss
This Dying Soul
Honor Thy Father
The Root of All Evil
Never Enough
(parts of octavarium)
Constant Motion
Repentence
The Shattered Fortress
The Best of Times

These are the songs he wrote not counting WDADU because Petrucci doesn't like it, and I forgot who wrote what on Scenes.

Do you really think they'll avoid ALL of these songs?

Yes I do. Absolutely. At least on the next tour anyway. There's so many other great songs to play anyway. Hold these back for the reunion tour :loser:

Darkes7

I hope no matter what they won't stop playing the 12-step suite songs as imo that's near the very top of the list of the most amazing things they've ever done. And Constant Motion is one of the most awesome live songs ever created.

I woudln't count on a reuinion tour anytime soon.

But I seriously don't understand the logic in purposefuly not playing MP lyric songs. They still play KM songs all the time.

Jarlaxle

The only songs I can see them retiring are the AA suite minus TRoaE, the Best of Times and (hopefully) Constant Motion.

I kinda mentioned this in the original post but...most of the km penned tunes are universally loved fan favorites...for the most part.  I don't think half of those songs you listed would fall under that category.

Yea I kind of noticed that as I was typing them out haha.

The reason why the songs from KM era are "fan favourites" and those above are not is their age alone, so I wouldn't take that into account.

Adami

Well ACOS, TGP, and so forth are all fan favorites. And maybe The Mirror as well.

Exactly. There's no way they'll stop playing songs just because MP wrote the lyrics to them, apart from the obvious ones like TBOT.

Speak for yourselves about fan favorites :lol

JayOctavarium

I think the 12 steps, acos, tbot will be shelved. All for the fact that lyrically thu are really deep. And hopefully constant motion wil go away for a while. I don't mind it but I think it has earned it a rest... And the lack of mp makes a good excuse to dump it

jdprsaga

No way they will shelf acos...

i think they only will shelf songs that haven't been played live .. in this case.. TBOT and the commplete 12 step suite. They do will play individual songs from the 12 step suite that have already been played live.
