25 years ago today, the little Colombian town of Armero was wiped off the face of the earth by a volcanic eruption https://is.gd/h12PX . According to Wikipedia, the tragedy in general and the death of Omayra Sánchez in particular, inspired Dream Theater's song "Peruvian Skies" https://is.gd/h0iDs . Is this story true? I can't find any other reference that confirms Wikipedia's statement.

I lived in a town near Armero for years, and had to pass a lot through its ruins when I traveled. They're scary and depressing at the same time. [inb4sadstorybro]

Anyway, I don't know about that; as far as I know the inspiration came to Petrucci when he read in a newspaper a domestic violence-related murder that happened in Peru. Don't know where I read that, but that's what I remember.

^I remember that too^.  AFAIK, it has nothing to do with any volcanic eruption.  I would say that was added to a wikipedia article by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

I've always associated it with domestic violence or child abuse. That's what the lyrics say to me. Certainly don't see any veiled reference to a volcano.

I thought JP heard a news story about a girl that got raped or abused or something in Peru.  I know that's the type of thing that inspired JLB's Anna Lee.
