What is you favourite Dreamtheater Lyric of all time that either gave you chills down your spine, made you think about life, reminds you of a special time...a special place in your life?

Mine would have to be from JP from the top of my heads its "Lines in the Sand"

" Living comes much easier...once we admit we're dying"

So powerful and really took me back to those days where I used to catch to bus to school (10 years ago) half asleep looking out the window each and everyday thinking about my future! Really puts things into perspective and just shows what great lyricists these guys truly are/were!

Whats yours?  Go!!!!

Off the top of my head, one would definately be "Here before you is your soul, so forever hold the dreams within our hearts", a-la the climactic end to Learning To Live. I shudder every single time.

A Change of Seasons and Learning to Live have some of the best DT lyrics ever IMO.

Its pretty interesting but the following really rings true especially with all thats going on:

"30 years say we're in this together, so open your eyes''! - Scarred

"30 years say we're in this together, so open your eyes''! - Scarred
"Sometimes I feel I should face this alone, my soul exposed, it calms me to know that I wont"

I wish petrucci writes somenthing like Scarred again

sneakyblueberry

in b4 SUCKING ON HIS PIPE!

I'll add to the Scarred love with:

"Do you feel, you don't know me anymore?  And do you feel, I'm afraid of your love?"

Not really thought provoking, but gives me chills!  Especially with James' delivery.  So good.

Edan the Man

My favorite has always been "Being laughed at and confused, keeps us pleasantly amused, enough to staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy *guitar solo*"

Fnejk

"Feeling as cold as outside
The walls disappear
To some woman who's screaming
A man pleads forgiveness
His words i cannot hear."

Or

"Open your eyes Victoria"

Those two parts always makes me smile

Lowdz

As a psychiatric nurse, i enjoy JP's lyrics when he deals with insanity (Voices, 6 degrees). He nails it and I've often wondered whether he knows someone who is "reality challenged".

RoeDent

Victoria watches and thoughtfully smiles, she's taken me to my home - Home

Sieze the day and don't you cry
Now it's time to say goodbye
Even though I'll be gone
I WILL LIVE ON! - A Change of Seasons

JayOctavarium

"I'm sick of all
Your hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need
Your sympathy
To get me through the day

Seasons change and so can I
Hold on Boy
No time to cry
Untie these strings
I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away"

&

""Seize the day
And don't you cry
Now it's time
To say good-bye
Even though
I'll be gone
I will live on
Live on""

Both from ACOS

also Petrucci's lines in Ministry of Lost Souls

I really appreciate the linguistic aspects of the "hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony" from ANTR. Love the use of the oxymoron.

Trial of Tears - "not much better than the man you hate"
A Change of Seasons - "we can learn from the past, but those days are gone- we can hope for the future, but there may not be one."

IdoSC

Obviously A Change of Seasons, but I'm personally a fan of Dead Poets Society. Hell, I consider it the best song of DT and I consider the movie as one of the best of all times just because of their message.

Not so far behind, Learning to Live.

"I wish I weren't so fucked" - As I Am

But seriously, DT's lyrics are awesome as hell. Most of the good ones were pre SFAM though.

ACOS
Lines in the Sand
Trial of Tears
Aw hell, fucking all of IW and Awake. Gah, so many lines to quote but I really cbf searching through and typing them atm.

@John94: Yeah dude, also lovin that oxymoron, beautiful agony. I totally relate to it. I remember the time when I was in hospital. I was in so much pain yet so high on drugs.

Quite a bit. The whole "Unbroken spirit obscured and disquiet" verse is wonderful. One often overlooked lovely one is "And as her image wandered through my head / I wept just like a baby as I lay awake in bed."

I thiought I was the only one who loved that line. If ever there were a DT song that could make me tear up, it's Through Her Eyes. Also, the delivery and harmonization of the chorus in One Last Time knocked me off my feet the first time heard it.

LCArenas

"Once again we dance in the crowd
At times a step away
From a common fear that's all spread out
It won't listen to what you say
Once you're touched you stand alone
To face the bitter fight
Once I reached for love
And now I reach for life"
-Learning to Live

"I'm kneeling on the floor
staring at the wall
like the spider in the window
I wish that I could speak
Is there fantasy in refuge?
God in politicians?
Should I turn on my religion?
These demons in my head tell me to"
-Voices

"Sometimes, for a moment of bliss
And the passion we're craving
There's a message we miss
Sometimes when the spirits left alone
We must believe in something
To find if we've grown"
-Lines in the Sand (I love the entire song lyrics, though. Same with LtL and Voices)

Jarlaxle

Step after step we try controlling our fate, when we finally start living it's become to late.  :heart

Ħ

I stood outside in the rain for us
I tried to work out all the pain for us
I sat alone and took the blame for us
My mind was torn and gone insane for us

I love that verse so much!

Ben_Jamin

"once lost but i was found when i heard the stained glass shatter all around me. I sent my spirit tumbling down a hill but i will hold this one up high above me still she whispers words into my mind i once could see but now at last i'm blind"

Seventh Son

I'm not really a lyrics kind of guy, I focus on the vocal lines more than anything.

However, this part REALLY sends chills down my spine.

There's no one to take my blame
if they wanted to
There's nothing to keep me sane
and it's all the same to you
There's nowhere to set my aim
so I'm everywhere
Never come near me again
do you really think I need you

Of course, I'm a SDV fanboy :neverusethis:

Seriously though, James' vocals combined with Kevin's haunting piano is just wow.

Absolutely!
Through Nature's inflexable grace..I'm Learning To Live.

"SEX IS DEATH
DEATH IS SEEEEX
Says it right here on my crucifix"

What's that all about?

Also, Under a Glass Moon. Now that REALLY made me think.
Fucking UaGM, how does it work?

"I sit down with my son, set to see the crimson sunset (gather ye rosebuds while ye may)."

Chills every time.

Zydar

Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night

She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, 'I Love You...Good-bye'

^HOW DID I FORGET THAT.

Another one:
I'll always remember
The Chill of November...
The news of the fall
The Sounds in the hall
The Clock on the wall, ticking away
"Seize the Day" I heard him say
"Life Will not always be this way"
"Look around, hear the sounds
Cherish your life while you're still around"

Voices is about someone who associates sex with immorality but can't help but lust after it and is kind of loony in the head.

I've always assumed Under a Glass Moon to have strong religious overtones.

I have a problem with this line as babys don't weep... they wail and scream, and I can't imagine Nicholas laid on his bed shreiking. Weeping has a whole different level to what a baby does. And yes I need to get out more!
