Very good song.  Probably the 3rd or 4th best song off of ToT.  And better than probably 14 of the 16 songs off the two albums that followed it.
Probably this.

Honor Thy Father is my 3rd favorite song on Train of Thought. I don't hate the rap section but they could've used something different for that part. I also think that not all of the samples in the middle part were necessary. But still, it's a very good song! Actually, this seems to be one of the few DT songs (possibly the only song) to feature a keyboard solo but no guitar solo.

BRGM

I Absolutely love Honor Thy Father! definetely top 15!! It's just great! And fun to play on guitar as well!

MykeHavoc

Cut out the rapping and its a superior track. I actually like the live version on the DVD.

pogoowner

When ToT was first released, I thought it was easily one of the worst songs Dream Theater had ever done. Now, after a few more albums, it's still not good, but it's not as close to the bottom as it used to be.

Ben_Jamin

I love how as the song grows the lyrics get more angrier. It's a perfect song for me everything fits. It's actually one that doesn't show off.

perfey

It's a good song, I dont mind the "rap", I think its actually fits the music underneath it, which is btw awesome. One of Jordans better solos and the riffs in this song show what a talented guitarist JP is, the intro with Mike's drumming is stellar too. I'll give it a 3/5.

Mebert78

Eh, the lyrics ruin the song for me.  To me, it's another MP song with cliche-filled lyrics in which he rants about someone he feels has done him wrong in life.  It's kinda high schoolish to me.  The music has it's good moments tho.

Well Mebert, I always rip rappers for talking about T & A and bling so I like it personally if a person writes what he or she is feeling.  (I know some rappers "keep it real")
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

I never had a problem with the lyrics. They're not great, but neither is the music. They're angry, angst filled and childish....like the music. And there's nothing so terrible about them that stands out.

Nah, it's fine. One of the better ones from TOT.

The worst Dream Theater song to me is Dance of Eternity.

RandalGraves

Ya know, a lot of people rip on the samples, but that part and the Rudess bit that follows it is my favorite part of the song.  The song as a whole I really dig.  Childish?  Maybe, but sometimes you just have to be pissed about something.  It's metal.

tri.ad

I can't quite follow this logic. You don't necessarily have to write a metal song to express that you're pissed about something.

No but considering the subject matter, comments such as "heavy for the sake of heavy" make zero sense. The lyrics and music compliment each other very well. I also don't find the song childish at all, angsty maybe, but everyone feels angst, including adults.

Cons:My main problem is with the music not the lyrics because they wrote a lot worse than that already.
The rapping is obnoxious, Portnoys input is strange to say the least on the don't watch the crooked step parts, the simple guitar riffs repeat a lot and if they don't have melodic Keyboards that accompany them (check Mirror) it sucks.
IMO and strangely enough it's the least progressive DT song even if it clocks more than 10 min.

Pros: This and the keyboard solos.
"On and on and on and on it goes
It's so easy to run away with nothing in tow

How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the nerve to blame this mess on me

Never in my life have I seen someone
So ignorant to the damage he has done
You're the rotted root in the family tree

I tried your 4 bill therapy
I tried to make amends
But nothing could lure you out of your selfish shell again
Expecting everyone to bow and kiss your feet
Don't you see respect is not a one way street
Blaming everyone for all that you've done wrong
I'll get my peace of mind when you hear this song

On and on and on and on it goes
And with every passing day true colors show"

HTF is alright.

Honor Thy Father

It's been ages since I heard ToT.

Starting a thread about what you consider to be their worst song seems like a really odd thing to do, but never mind. I really like HTF, solid 9/10 song, probably my 3rd favourite on TOT.

This.  One of my favs on ToT also.

I just don't like threads such as this one. I have never been a fan of starting threads about songs you don't like on a bands fan board. It tends to become too heated and brings out the trolls.
Honor Thy Father is a fine song as far as I'm concerned.

Once again, Tick is the mature voice of reason.

I love this song. I don't know where it would rank for me, maybe top 20? But overall probably the second best song on Train of Thought

PuffyPat

It's a great song to just rock out to. Plus it's got Christopher Walken in it, so it's good in my book.

Jarlaxle

I don't know if there is or not, but is there any significant reasoning for "don't cross the crooked step", or is it just a random lyric?

Ben_Jamin

It's just a lyric that emphasizes that musical part
