Well, today I just gave ITNoG another listen, and I just heard the Battle Hymn of The Republic everyone mentioned.

So, has anyone else discovered something new lately? (Just curious)

Adami

I listened to um, what was it........oh yea AROP, and I noticed how much Portnoy is doing crap during the verses. And I also noticed all the effects and stuff they have on his voice during the verses.

I haven't listened to DT in a while. Well, besides a few tracks from Awake.

It's really cool in small doses. But he's using it wayyyyyy too much these days and it's becoming a bit annoying.

i have not a finding, but a realization.

if scenes from a memory is made into a TV play or film, it must be much less impressive and maybe boring and cliche, what make this scenes from a memory so good is pure magic of music.

This.  And yes, his crap during AROP is laughable!!

Then I think you've heard them more than enough.

For me, I'm kinda appreciating Space Dye Vest.

I've just noticed lately what an amazing song These Walls are.  Amazing atmosphere and JP's melody solo is pure bliss.  Underrated track.

People mostly call it the best song from Octa aside from its title track, so I think it's getting what it deserves.

Really??  I always thought TROAE, SS or PA were the next in line after 8vm for most people.

sneakyblueberry

These Walls is awesome, I've just recently come to love it too.

I love these walls, the keyboard rif/lead kinda thing is kickass!! I'd love to see this song live, and it's cool with a Baritone!  :tup

I haven't discovered anything i new in DT recently though.

RoeDent

I've recently acquired a new-found appreciation of Images and Words. Until a few months ago, I only really liked Metropolis, but I've grown to love the rest of the album now. I particularly like Learning to Live, especially the reprise of Wait for Sleep at 8:12.

Since most of this thread has become a discussion on appreciation of songs or realizations on DT's music , I'm changing the thread title to reflect it. (If I can)

Nevermind. I can't.

To stay on topic, after posting I have learned to appreciate 8VM (the album). So far, I like all but two songs on that album.

lateralus88

Note - You can change the thread title. Just change the title in your original post. It changes it for the entire thread.

Dublagent66

I have recently discovered that no matter how many people here hate a certain DT song, I can ALWAYS find something that I like about it.  Something.  Anything.  Somehow.

Nic35

I realised something. I find it very disappointing to hear songs like TCOT and AROP. I mean, they are such talented musicians AND lyricists that I can't believe they write songs like AROP with the silly MP's back vocals.

Ben_Jamin

a lot of songs that people here hate I love. The main one being PoW.

awesome. another example is about to crash(reprise) in 6DOIT.

Samsara

In the past couple of years I realized that DT is much more derivative in their earlier years than I thought they were. Obviously, I've been a vocal opponent of just how contrived and ridiculous DT is when it formulates its songs to sound like "X" band. Sorta like how Mike was telling James to sing a certain way to sound like Freddie Mercury to capture a Queen vibe, or how they stole that riff from Metallica's "Blackened."

But I was shocked a few years back when I bought Fates Warning's Perfect Symetry for the first time...and immediately heard the same vibe from Images and Words. Not necessarily rips of the songs or anything, but an overall vibe and how the songs were constructed and presented. It was glaring. HUGELY glaring.

So I went and looked to see when both records came out. Sure as shit, PS came out well before I&W ever did.

I know a lot of folks don't care about this sort of thing, but it was really devastating to me as a fan. I knew that latter era DT really wore its influences on its sleeves and I didn't like it being so blatant. But I mistakenly thought that was just something that happened post-FII. Guess not.

My books available for purchase on Amazon:

Roads to Madness: The Touring History of Queensrÿche (1981-1997)

Fates Warning sounds more like WDADU to me. And Pull Me Under. I don't think it extends too far out, I&W is just too bright sounding to me.

But yeah, Mike himself mentioned the influence, sayiong how Fate's been doing that progmetal sound for years before DT came into the picture.

Atm I'm really loving TMOLS. Especially the instrumental section, fantastic work.

Marvellous G

I somehow only just realised the Metropolis riff slipped into the middle of Home, and I smiled.

I assume you noticed the heavy E metrop riff being played on hi hates right before the verse on home too?

TAC

PS vs I&W.

The only real similarity to me was the outstanding drumming. I&W has a heart and soul that PS could only dream of. There's a grace that I&W brings that FW has never really been able to duplicate. The only things that FW has done that really has any heart to it is Parallels. I mean I like Inside Out (a lot!) and APSOG, but similarly to Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater just seems to have that authentic soul to it. Yeah, they wear their influences on their sleeves for sure. As far as Queen goes, when Brian May says DT has done the BEST Queen cover he has ever heard..that's saying something!
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

The Awesome

Through time spent browsing DTF, I have discovered that Dream Theater apparently blows. Sure, they all have immense talent, but they could greatly improve by doing the following:

1) Remove instrumental breaks
2) Play fewer notes
3) Write better lyrics
4) More prog
5) Less metal
6) Shorter songs
7) Longer songs
8) Something about epics
9) SUCKING ON HIS PIPE
10) Do another concept album
11) Never do another concept album
12) Hide MP's mic
13) Better setlists
14) Kevin Moore

Well, Kevin Moore did play keys on Perfect Symetry, so some similarities should be expected.
