I did not that say that, do NOT put words in my mouth.
Quotes got messed up somehow. Sorry  :lol

It's all good, I was just messing with ya.

But hey, if it'll benefit the forum for me to shut up like Adami said, so be it.

ConstantMotion

It's one of my all-time favorite DT songs, so I'd hate it if they stopped playing it. That being said, it IS a little overplayed.

Nick

Your sig is too big, read the rules and shrink it please.

Any way we can save it for the chat threads, fellas?  A little off-threadery is OK as comedic relief, but it can't take the place of the thread.

They should give CM a rest not because its a terrible song, but simply because its overplayed.  The last three shows I went to (Boston 09, Worcester '10, NYC '10) all had it - and if I had went to Boston for PN '08 I would have gotten it there as well.

DTVT, Constant Motion was NOT played in Boston '09 and PN '08. It WAS played in Boston '07 and Worcester '10. So we certainly haven't been overloaded with it. It is a great song live, and I would not expect it to be played in Boston on the next tour, but I would expect it to be kept in the master setlists for places they haven't played in for a few years.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

They probably should just cause of how many times they've played it. It seems to work great as an opener and I'm guessing the frequency at which they play it means the band likes playing it (crowd energy helps too). That being said it wouldn't hurt to dust off a few older tracks to kick off some shows with.

Yeah, like 6:00.

IIRC, they used "Metropolis" as an opener quite a bit back on the I&W tour, and I still think that would be a kickass opener.  They probably consider it too much of an old classic to start off a show with, but I think it would still work really well.

orcus116

I've always thought A Fortune In Lies would be a badass opener.

It would, but being from the debut, it would probably be too much of an unknown song to many of the casual fans (see: the fans who don't post on internet forums :lol) to get the reaction a first song should.

Jamesman42

Take the Time would be good as well. Especially if they extended the ambient intro to hold some suspense.

This'd make a fairly nifty thread. Probably wouldn't pass a page, but it'd be a good page.

I think Erotomania would be a lush opener. Gets straight in there. No James for five minutes, sure, but the same goes for ITPOE pt. 1, which is really cool too.

orcus116

What about a live only opener kinda like The Who had with "Heaven and Hell"? Probably won't happen but I can dream.

Jamesman42

^Would that be a song that they write specifically for their live shows, or a song that is already written, such as them opening up with Acid Rain (which would rock)?

Seventh Son

Take the Time
6:00
Metropolis
Erotomania
Peruvian Skies (I think this would be a great opener)
The Glass Prison
The Root of all Evil

Those would be some great openers.

While I don't mind Dream Theater's soloing, I wish they'd throw some actual instrumental sections in there, where they play stuff that's impressive without necessarily being flashy. It seems like lately the only Instrumental stuff DT do is soloing over riffage for extended periods of time.

I'd love to hear more stuff like the:

Beyond This Life>
The Oakdale Odyssey>
The Spirit Of St. Louis>
Petrucci

section of the International Fan Club disc.

darkshade

for their next tour (their TRUE tour, probably An Evening With...) the sets will probably be something like this (at least for their new live album/DVD, in which i think they will ease up on SC songs)

A Nightmare to Remember
These Walls >
Raw Dog
A Rite of Passage
The Great Debate
The Best of Times (though i dont think theyll play this song for a looong time)
Fatal Tragedy
Learning to Live

set break

Octavarium
The Count of Tuscany

Encore:

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentance
The Shattered Fortress

that's if it's for BC&SL and there is no new album...... Notice that 8V has melodies that are reprised in TCOT. And the 12 step suite has a couple of 8V parts as well.

icysk8r

Considering they've played in about every city, Mike won't allow it to be played next tour anyways.

ariich

Darkshade, I really don't think it'll be anything like that. They definitely wouldn't play TCOT and Octavaium, if either. And I imagine they'll do the 12 step suite but only at a handful of shows.

TCOT will definitely be played

They didn't play In The Presence Of Enemies on many ProgNation 08 dates, but they played it on almost all the headlining shows. So I think that's a decent gauge on Tuscany. Most likely, they'll have switched Tuscany and ANtR out with The Shattered Fortress and The Best of Times. I think the only repeats we'll get, if any, are A Rite of Passage.

But since they've now played that songs TWICE in many cities this year, thanks to the Maiden tour, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get that either.

Plasmastrike

I see what you guys mean. It makes sense to me.

I was just referring to darkshade's setlist for the new live DVD. Yes, I know there isn't one planned.

BUT IF THERE IS.. I can't see TCOT not making it on that DVD. It's the new album's epic. Not to mention it's phenomenal live, especially the outro. That has potential to be such a great, great ending to a live DVD.

The Letter M

I recall MP saying there wouldn't be a DVD of any BC&SL show, from any leg of any tour on support of the album. This leads me to believe that, the next time they decide to record/release a show, it'll be in support of their next studio album, which undoubtedly means new epics to play, opening and closing a show.

What this means for BC&SL material is unclear, but perhaps we will get those songs, in live format, through a future YtseJamRecords release. I can see "The Best Of Times", "The Shattered Fortress", "Wither" and possibly "A Rite Of Passage" making it to the next DVD, the former two because they've yet to be played live so their chances are higher, and the latter two because they are shorter and are the singles representative of BC&SL. As for the two longest songs on the album, I doubt we'll see them on an official live release... whatever their next album holds will determine the likelihood of those song's inclusion on the next major tour/official live release.

Back to the original topic: I love "Constant Motion" live, I think it does a really good job of hooking the newer Dream Theater fans that maybe don't know a lot of DT's material, and it's really catchy and  :metal. My opinion might be slightly biased though because I've only seen it live once (only seen DT twice  :P), and even besides that, I don't grow tired of songs easily at all.

ScioPath

Yes, but there are so many better things that could be on their setlist.

Well, there's a good chance we'll see them on a future release (maybe not the next one, but maybe another future one). Look at a song like Trial of Tears. Wasn't included on the 5 Years in a LIVEtime DVD, but lo and behold, they bring it out in time for the Budokan show.
Portnoy's rotational policies are quite excellent. I wouldn't fret about not seeing any songs on DVD releases...he'll find a way to get them on there.

Perpetual Change

I'm actually hoping for a "redo" of Scarred and Blind Faith. I know they're on CiM, but I'd love high quality versions.
