... But now you do.

I was wondering if that situation has ever happened to you. About two weeks ago I was in the Controversial Music Thread and I was about to say I didn't like Lines in the Sand, this because I remember not liking that song very much the first time I heard it. However I decided to check it again just to make sure I didn't like it, and surprisingly, I liked it a lot, and now it's among my favorite FII songs.

So has that ever happened to you? With which songs?

EDIT: I also had the same experience with The Ministry of Lost Souls.

Gadough

Repentance.

I thought it was boring at first.

I was dumb.

kirbywelch92

Voices, it took me a few listens to understand the majesty (no pun intended) of that song.

Same here.  Didn't like "The Glass Prison," "Misunderstood," or "Disappear" at first either.

Strangely enough, I actually didn't like "Octavarium" the first few times, either.  And yes, I mean the song.  And yes, I know that's heresy.

ZBomber

All of Awake. Nothing really caught me at first, it took a few listens before it all sunk in.

Not all of it, for me, but it did take me a long time to really GET the album and for it to CLICK with me. I really enjoyed "The Mirror", "Scarred" and the "A Mind Beside Itself" suite, but the rest took some time to grow on me. The same can be said for FII as well, but I liked the longer songs, "Lines In The Sand" (as well as "Burning My Soul" and "Hell's Kitchen", as they all segued together) and "Trial Of Tears"... "Anna Lee" also struck me as being an early favorite, but the rest was just good or worse. Now I enjoy BOTH albums and get them, and understand more about the albums based on what I know about the band from those times, and how and why they did what they did.

Everything from SFAM on was pretty much liked instantly, but a few were met with some trepidation. "Misunderstood", "Honor Thy Father", "These Walls". "Forsaken", and "A Rite Of Passage" weren't easily liked at first on their respective albums. Almost everything else from those albums were instant favorites upon first listens, but those particular songs took a bit of time to digest or understand, which is pretty good fro DT, considering the average length of those songs is about 7 minutes, being only about 10% of a DT album, they must be doing something really good if I can enjoy 90% or more of an album nearly instantly!  :tup

Most of FII songs and Surrounded (but then I realized)

toro

Lines In The Sand, Blind Faith
Boy i was so wrong.

DarkEternalNight

A ton. Most recently came around to Surrounded and Octavarium.

Zydar

The Great Debate
Honor Thy Father
Panic Attack

Mladen

Metropolis, Learning to live, Scarred, Burning my soul, The Great debate, Panic attack and Wither. All turned out to be some of my favorites for some reason.

jcmistat

The Shattered Fortress, Ministry of Lost Souls, The Great Debate off the top off my head for specific songs.

In my early days of DT I never understood the greatness of Six Degrees. I was too obsessed with SFAM being the best album that I didn't give anything else a chance, but now its my favorite album. Same thing for BC&SL the first time through the album I was full of disappointment but that's all changed.

Sintheros

Learning to Live
Honor Thy Father
Solitary Shell
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium

Now all of these songs would make my top 50 for sure, one my top 10, and one my top 5.

A lot of them. Dream Theater seemed very weird to me when I first started listening to them.

This. Literally every single DT song except SDOIT, Octavarium and Pull Me Under, and then the obvious shorter poppier ones, took me a stupid amount of listens to appreciate. For example, I hated Glass Prison for half a year and always skipped it after the main riff was over. How times change. I also couldn't understand most of I&W and SFAM, and I thought Metropolis and Take The Time and Learning To Live were too overwhelming to ever like. It just goes to show, the best albums are growers.

BRGM

Lines in the sand! Thought that one was just wierd and Not good before, now I really like it.
The Killing Hand! :O Hated it, It is now growing on me
hmm, Endless sacrifice was a little like that. It was like meh :S nothing special, but I've noticed that the instrumental section is freaking O_O  :tup
Same goes with The dance and Fatal tragedy.
Most of SC too...but SDOIT and BC&SL are the albums that I love to 100%

This.

Also, "Home" took a long time for me to appreciate.

John94

Quite a few actually, but some songs I loved from the first play and still do today.

Songs that stick out for include:
Scarred
Voices
Misunderstood
Disappear

You may slate me as you wish, but during at first, as a whole, Six Degrees did not appeal to me.

Aniland

Scarred (I only semi-like the whole thing to this day, but that bit [you know the one] is too perfect)
Lie (was annoying to me, but it finally clicked)
Learning to Live (I didn't dislike it, but it bored me to no end. Now it's one of my absolute favorites)

Songs I still don't like (the very few there are)

"Peruvian Skies"
"Lines in the Sand"
"Panic Attack"
"A Rite of Passage"

Dublagent66

6:00
Caught In A Web
New Millennium
Just Let Me Breathe
Disappear
Vacant
The Answer Lies Within

Most of Awake, most of WDADU, Lines in the Sand, probably some others.

Honestly, joining this board and seeing people absolutely rave about songs that didn't hit me at first really motivated me to give a lot of them further attention.

Disappear actually, which is a bit funny.
I had always been a bit 'meh' towards it, because the keyboard-part creeped me out completely.
However it turned around, and i now consider it to be my favorite DT-song.

:heart
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)
Bandcamp: parisinthespring

(Also on Spotify!)

ScioPath

Pretty much all of 6DOIT except for Blind Faith, TGP, and Sollitary Shell, which have always been favorites.
Also most of FiI and the Demos. Awake too. And also it took a while for Fatal Tragedy to click.

hefdaddy42

New Millennium.

Most of the songs I dislike at first, I keep disliking.

DreamerTV

The whole systematic chaos album. But, listening it recently i figured out that is a pretty well done album, even if i always skip TDEN.

Neada

hmmm...
Voices,
Peruvian Skies,
Burning My Soul,
Anna Lee,
Hollow Years,
The Answer Lies Within,
I  Walk Beside You,
all songs from "chaos" and "clouds and linings",...((

Nic35

I didn't like ITPOE pt.2 and Scarred. Now Scarred is my favorite DT song.

chrisbDTM

ACID_FOX

FII, which later became my favourite DT album.
