I wonder if the next album is when we finally see Myung's name removed from the writing credits?  :sadpanda:
They're still presenting always the music as
Music by: Dream Theater
Lyrics by: *insert lyricist here*

In very few spots, the "music by" tag changes, like in Wither for example, where the music is entirely attributed to JP, or Vacant where the music is attributed to JM and JR. They're still Dream Theater, not "The Rudess, Portnoy and Petrucci experience".

It's really hard to tell, unfortunately :-\
Yeah, that's another thing. It's undeniable that Myung has had less imput in recent DT music than in their older albums.
However, just because someone might prefer the older albums does not mean more Myung influence makes the album better.

orcus116

I disagree. He had some killer bass lines back in the day. Over time they seem to have gotten simpler and lost in the mix.

Yeah that's how I see it. I mean, BCSL was a phenomenal album, even with the JR/JP/MP triangle, but it can't touch albums like Awake and Images & Words in terms of songwriting

MetropolisxPt1

My idea is they do a heavy "Train of Thought heavy"  album, with more vocals from James when he used to sing like on Take The Time. When was the last album you heard that style from James.

Those who would like an album more like TOT are in the minority here, I think.  I would love that, but I doubt it would happen.

Can we stop the whole "______would like a word with you" thing? Please?
Can we stop the whole "can we stop this thing, please?" Please?

Stopping the whole "let's stop this '______ would like a word with you' " thing would like to have a word with you.

My brain *splode.

No. Just no.

Absolutely not

Nic35

They could write an album with a general musical theme that would go throughout the entire album, in the vein of Neal Morse's One.

That'd be very cool.

darkshade

bring back Jerry Goodman from the last album and do some jazzier stuff. might at well grab bruce fowler or some other jazz horn player  :hat

lol not saying they should go fusion, but adding a little more color with some chords or something would be cool (the band HAS said they enjoy jazz-fusion)

otherwise, less metal more prog and rock. maybe more grooves (like ToT, but still less metal)

OPEN THE NEW ALBUM WITH A SERIOUS BAD-ASS BASSLINE!

AcidLameLTE

DT should totally add more jazz in.

INTRO TO SCARRED ANYONE?!

AcidLameLTE

It's preferable to your "make it suck even more than Systematic Chaos" suggestion.

More jazz would be awesome; I really miss that flair from JP's older playing.

I'm starting to think the legend about Nick permanently failing was misinterpreted and was actually about you. :lol

But sorry, no, I don't see the need for jazz. As for Scarred intro, I just found out I don't remember what it sounds like. I remember everything else about the song. This is not a good sign.

The intro to Scarred is one of the most creative pieces of music DT has ever written.  If they wanted to infuse a little more of that in the future, I would be all in.

I definitely agree. Atmospheric and groovy. I'd love to see them doing stuff like that again.

darkshade

i didnt say they should bust out into walking basslines and free-blow soloing from a sax or something, im just saying, them being so eclectic, take some hints from jazz to spice up the music a little more (hell it probably wouldnt even sound like jazz anyway, do Planet X sound like jazz? (aside from when they occasionally have an actual jazz part))

orcus116

It'd be great if they found some jazz roots because I think all of Petrucci's best solos are jazz based in terms of his playing style.

Yeah, they could call it Octavarium.

toro

They need to do an album with more than 7 tracks and insted do a 10+ album with short songs and a couple of 10+ minutes songs ala Awake.

I would love this, but it probably won't happen. I have a feeling they'll continue the trend of 5-6 10+ minute songs and 1-2, 6-8 minute songs.

TL

They could make a double album, with one disc having shorter songs, and the other having a few epics. Or maybe several shorter tracks and one epic per disc.
Regardless of how many songs or the length of their songs, I hope they get really experimental on the next album.
