Seventh Son

Wouldn't put it ANYWHERE near #2, but at least we're getting to #1.

PlaysLikeMyung

So Six Degrees is number two...

The fact that either Learning To Live or Octavarium won't be on the list is.... shameful :P

Indeed.

I might rage if it's not Learning to Live.
I will rage if that's the case.

moffatt

This is what I meant when I said my list would be controversial :P

RuRoRul

I can understand it not being in someone's top 20 or so, but Learning To Live not even making a top 50 seems like a bit of oversight. Unless for some reason you really hate the song. I can't imagine it being that mediocre though.

That's assuming it's not #1. Octavarium seems much more likely.

Anyway I'd sign up to do this as well, not sure if you'd want to sign me up though since there are so many people already on a waiting list.

Seventh Son

Octavarium being #1 while LtL not being on it (like I suspect is the case), will be more than controversial. :P

Minimum top 5 for me, personally. I fucking love it. Perfect way to end Images and Words.

Learning to Live would be my number 1 by miles, while Octavarium might not make the top 30 or so.

This. As mush as i like 8VM, there's no way it outranks LtL as no. 1.

tsk, i'll be livid whether the #1 is 8VM or LTL.. then again, it might be neither  :lol

LieLowTheWantedMan

I wouldn't have a problem with no LtL. No 8V however...

Yes, I know, I fail.

Yes you do  :P.
Although 8VM was at number 3 on my list I would'nt really mind if is not in the top 50, but no LTL? that's a SIN.

Zantera

Learning to Live wouldn't be in my top20, but i'm not sure if Octavarium would be either.
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

LTL is def my #1... I'm worried about #1 though. Six degrees is good, but doesn't have a real flow - just a series of scattered songs with a similar lyrical theme, not top 30 material.

Might I suggest a pattern for us to follow so we can get through everyone, since this is taking forever?

7+7+6+5+5+4+3+3+3+2+1+1+1+1+1

That's fifteen uploads.  Courtesy update every at least every two days, preferably only one day in between...if more than a week passes, we move on to the next guy.  What do you all think?

Jarlaxle

I think it's not a big deal. We aren't waiting on our death bed to speak our dying wishes.

...that's just because you're next.

So........you'd rather stick with this slower method, than modify it based on it's problems?

toro

That's not really the point, just wait like everyone else has done.

Edit: You know what? that sounds selfish, but it's not really up to anyone other than the one in turn.

Seventh Son

This is why people should have all the writeups done beforehand, or a majority of them :P

Jarlaxle

If it doesn't kill the vibe that you want to give, I think it would set a stable precident if you used that pattern.

Jarlaxle

Nah, I'll just stick with however many I can get done in a day.

That is what I meant. In case your schedule slows you down you have some set aside to post anyway.

So finally, here it is

Incoming Rage

1. Octavarium
Yep, its Octavarium, not Learning to Live, so learn to deal with it. This song is my favourite song of all time, and let me gladly explain why... Strangely for me, this was one of the first DT songs that I liked, but back then I didn't like it for what it really is. I just thought it had a cool instrumental section and good singing by James. But after listening to this song again and again I came to see that this was music at its best. The whole intro is just fantastic. Yer its quite pink floydy ish, but tbh who cares. Its no way near a direct rip off. I mean we get the main theme popping up during it. Its really well written and is probably my favourite thing JR has ever done. The continuum work is so cool to listen too. Onto the band coming in and most definitely the best light riff DT have ever done. Its so simple but so good, and the flute solo on top of that is just perfect. Then we get the cool darker riff, followed by James's first appearance in the song. Of course as this is my favourite DT song, it is definitely my favourite song with James singing. And this is proven if you listen to Someone Like Him. JP lyrics are great and really fit the mood of this part of the song. The transition is also probably the best transition they have ever done. The bass lick is so awesome, and with Portnoy's groovy drumming on top following James's great one liner. Medicate (Awakening) has such an awesome chorus. But the highlight of this part has to be JR's keyboard solo. He just nails it so well. Favourite JR keyboard solo apart from the intro to the song :P. So full circle time, and this contains some of the coolest lyrics ever written. Portnoy did some amazing work, and what a great tribute it is at the same time. The main riff is really cool too. The chorus is just bloody amazing too. Portnoy's ace backing vocals fit perfect with James's voice here. And man again, the way the second chorus just runs into the instrumental section is just perfect. The instrumental section is just 3 minutes of musical bliss. I love the way each section just builds up and then bursts into another section. Its awesome when JR and JP play the same part one after eachother at the start of it. The unison part is insane as usual. Then it gets really proggy and cool. The happy kind of guitar solo, JR weird funny keys, the cool classical guitar lick. Then the build up to the transition and everything goes calm for a bit. AGAIN these lyrics are just fucking awesome. Brilliant way to sum up the album. This part is just so epic, highlight for James's career imo. It took me ages to realise you could hear snippets of the songs in the background. And of course TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM, is just amazing and the score version TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, even better. I don't understand how this song could get any better, but man it does. Razor's edge is the highlight of the song definitely. James's part is brilliant, although its short he yet again, outdoes himself. The line "The story ends where it begins" is such a fantastic last line to the song. And then BOOM, the best solo JP has and will ever do. Its just unbelievably epic. That last note just hits the spot perfectly. The score version of this song is one of the most epic things ever filmed. The live orchestra is so good with the song. This for me is more than a song, more like a musical journey. I don't think DT will ever write a better song than this, they just did something special here, and god I would die to one day see it live for myself. I am proud to call this my favourite song of all time, and is the reason why Dream Theater are my favourite band.

So yer Learning to Live didn't make my top 50. I mean I do like the song, I just don't see what is so good about it. And I know a lot of people think what I just said is blasphemy, but hey, it was my top 50, not yours :P I hope you have enjoyed the controversialism and once again sorry for the late updates and I look forward to reading other peoples list's.
