In no order :
SDOIT
Octavarium
Learning to Live
Beyond This Life
Voices

What do I win ?

"Beyond This Life" already has a spot at 28.

I'd say Octavarium, 6 Degrees and Learning to Live are given.  I'd say it's going to be Voices and either Pull Me Under or Fatal Tragedy.  However, I can't see any of those three missing the top 50, so your guess is as good as mine.

I'll also say I'm surprised we haven't seen As I Am yet, but I can't see that one in the top five, even though it features some of JP's best guitar work.

Zook

Pull Me Under in the top 5? That's some crazy wackadoo.

you lose i'm afraid (already had BTL).

Replace BTL with scarred is a decent bet though.

GuineaPig

As much as I disagreed with the other 45 places on this list, the top 5 looks like it's going to be pretty bitchin'.

And it should be much, much lower

Great list so far, hope to see Six Degrees or Octavarium at number 1  :tup

UPDATE!

Also, would you mind if I eventually took over this thread?

Marvellous G

I'm guessing SDOIT, Octavarium, LtL, Voices and then I'm not really sure. Has Disappear been featured yet? I forget, but maybe a slower, slightly more surprising choice like that?

Actually based on Quad's LastFM Pull Me Under looks possible/probable.

BRGM

Come on now Quad! :D We wanna know the 5 best DT songs, in your opinion

RoeDent

Just come to this list, but I've read it through thus far, so I'm caught up. Interesting list so far. Shame that The Great Debate didn't make the main list (#51), but you can't have everything. Looking forward to the top 5.  :)

Of course not, as soon as I am finished I will gladly change the title to reflect your list.

5. "Octavarium" - Octavarium

Whew, what a trip this song is. There really isn't enough you can say about it. It's got everything, from an awesome PF inspired introduction with JR's best continuum work, to the Yes sounding synth work a bit before halfway through to the big verses that list influence to the fast paces later-middle section to the epic finale. Certainly the best on 8VM and the fifth best song the band ever wrote.

predator13

Interesting, I asummed 6DOIT and Octavarium would battle for 1 and 2 but still cool.

Silver Tears

Octavarium had to make the top five  :tup

4. "Scene Three: II. Fatal Tragedy - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

This song easily features some of the greatest riffs that DT has ever come up with. It is a quintessential DT song in that it features everything that DT is good at doing in under 10 minutes, so it's one of the best songs to show someone who is getting into the band. The middle section is easily the best instrumental DT has done by miles. It also features amazing vocals by LaBrie and awesome lyrics. It ends with an incredible unison section that always leaves me dazed and confused :lol. Not a bad moment in this song if you ask me.

Meleeruler

You put Fatal Tragedy in a better place than Octavarium?  >:(

*MP roar from ANTR*

But yeah, I can dig the list. It's been pretty fun going through it like this in 5 song intervals (obviously though now it's shorter).

Yup, it basically consists of everything that 8VM has, but better.

KevShmev

I have no problem at all with the placement of "Fatal Tragedy" at number 4.  It wouldn't be that high for me, but it is an awesome song.  And I probably like it more than "Octavarium," too. :tup :tup

Mladen

Back when I started listening to Dream Theater, Fatal tragedy was my number 1. Now it would probably make top 15.  ;D Awesome song indeed.

RoeDent

I second the above. The closing instrumental section contains Mike Portnoy's best drumming, imo. It was the first song of theirs I really got into, so it deserves its place in the top 5.

:O same thing happend to me :p

While I personally wouldn't put anything from Scenes in my top 5, I approve of most of these choices.

BRGM

I like myungs playing during the Unison

3. "Learning to Live" - Images & Words

I honestly don't even know where to start with LtL. It's such musical perfection in every aspect. It has LaBrie's highest note on any DT album (I think) and the ending is just one of the best things ever. The "Wait for Sleep" reprise is pretty awesome too. I wish DT would play this song live more for us newer fans, because it'd be pretty sick to see played live in its entirety.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Finally something that deserves its place in top 5. :metal

Learning To Live is easily in my top 5 as well. A perfect song. I consider it as a happy version of Scarred, which is also in my top 5.

KevShmev

LtL is consistently in my top 3 (usually 2 or 3), so, yeah, I like this pick. :)

Plasmastrike

Number 1 for me without a doubt

Seeing it in the top five pleases me wholeheartedly.

I agree with this. LTL is musical perfection all around.

Zydar

LtL is perhaps my #1 DT song. Such a masterpiece on a masterpiece album.
