Title: skydivingninja's Top 50 Dream Theater Songs! (Starts at Page 9)
Post by: Quadrochosis on May 08, 2010, 03:31:38 PM
Hello all, it's been a while since my last Top 50 list, and I decided that what better a time than to start one for DT? I made this list in about 20 minutes and it is just meant for fun, don't take things too seriously. All of their albums are well represented here in my opinion.

I'll try to do about 5 a day until I get to the top 10, at which point I will slow down.

Note: My list may be controversial.

Here we go..

50. "A Mind Beside Itself III. The Silent Man" - Awake

Pretty good song on Awake, I really like their acoustic songs a lot, I feel that they should try to do some more in the future. It has a weird video, featuring an old man (:lol) and other than that there isn't really much more to say.

49. "Scene Two: I. Overture 1928" - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory

One of the coolest overtures in music ever, I absolutely adore this song. JP has a ton of awesome riffs, and it also happens to be the first that we here of Jordan. Great tune and a wonderful way to start off Scenes.

48. "These Walls" - Octavarium

Pretty good tune off Octavarium. Probably would have been on of the singles if they had made any for this album. I really like the message in the song and I can truly relate to it. One of my favorites off of 8VM.

47. "New Millennium" - Falling Into Infinity

Cool song that features Myung on the Chapman Stick. It's one of my favorite opening tracks on a DT album and the song reminds me a lot of Genesis for some reason.

46. "The Shattered Fortress: X. Restraint / XI. Receive / XII. Responsible" - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

I must admit, I'm not a huge fan of the AA Suite. It is still a pretty awesome song, however, and I really enjoy listening to it within the context of Black Clouds, although I think the ending goes on a bit too much.

More to come tomorrow!

Holy shit I've had a top 50 DT list at the ready for a couple of weeks now...you beat me to it you bastard!  ;D Well, I'll be following with great interest, even though you've already committed massive fail with such low placement of "These Walls," "New Millenium," "Overture 1928," and "The Shattered Fortress."

Trouble communicating with others.  One of the reasons its one of my favorite DT songs.

The ending goes on a bit too much?!  Surely you don't mean the solo or "I AM RESPONSIBLE!" sections, because that solo and following chorus are in my top 10 DT moments.

(And yes, I'll stop calling you Shirley...)

You can't tell me that the never ending LaBrie "WoaaaAAH, WOOOAAAH WOOOAAH ... (insert 50 more woahs) ... wwoaah!" aren't incredibly annoying at best.

These are some good choices, although I think only Overture 1928 would make my top 50. Maybe New millennium, but I'm not sure... Good job so far.  :tup

I was obviously exaggerating, but I still think they're annoying as hell. Maybe if they sounded less awkward I'd be alright with them.

OK here's today's update:

45. "The Mirror" - Awake

People will hang me for this, but here it is. Like I said, I'm not a terribly huge fan of the AA suite, and while this one isn't part of it, it still has the same feel for me. I'm more of a prog guy than a metal guy also, so the real headbanging tunes don't do as much for as some of their more proggy tracks. My favorite part of this song is the Space-Dye Vest theme in it.

44. "Hollow Years" - Falling Into Infinity

Great tune, I wish they had played it at the show I was at this past year, but it's all good. Great track and I love the extended bits that Petrucci does when they play this live.

43. "A Fortune In Lies" - When Dream and Day Unite

I'm a really big fan of WDADU, so get used to seeing some more of it on my list. This song is really awesome, and one of the first DT songs I heard. I actually prefer Charlie's singing to LaBrie's (on WDADRU). I know that puts me in a super-minority here, but what are you gonna do.

42. "Another Day" - Images & Words

This is the song that actually got me into Dream Theater. I was so stunned when I first heard it 5 or 6 years ago and I knew that DT would be the band for me. It's moved down to 42 now, because I have grown to love a ton of other DT songs, but this one will always have a special place in my heart.

41. "The Best of Times" - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Another beautiful DT song. I really enjoy the lyrics here, and while I know that many people here don't like the song, I really enjoy it. I can't wait until MP is comfortable to play this live because I'm sure it would be killer live.

Was gonna say that. The Best of Times solo can bring tears to my eyes if I let it. Actually, it's probably my second favorite Petrucci solo behind only 2:10-4:10 from In the Presence of Enemies Part 1.

Well, at least you mentioned "The Best of Times."  Too bad its not as high as it should be   Its one of my favorite DT songs, I can't wait to hear it live also.  I totally agree on "The Mirror" too, I'm not too into it, but the SDV theme part is godly.

Here's today's update:

40. "Only A Matter of Time" - When Dream & Day Unite

Not much to say about this song other than the fact that it rocks. Some cool vocals, I love the way Dominici delivers the title line.

39. "Scene Five: Through Her Eyes" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

One of DT's most beautiful songs. I always get teary when I hear this song. I like the alternate take on the song as well, I think both are pretty awesome. LaBrie has some cool vocals here, and there's some really nice emotional guitar playing.

38. "Sacrificed Sons" - Octavarium

I like the use of samples in this tune. It's one of 8VM's two epics and although it's the lesser one, it still holds its own. I saw this live at PN09 and loved it.

37. "The Dark Eternal Night" - Systematic Chaos

One of the best songs on SC. Jordan's improvised Continuum solo at the end of the song is awesome, as is his ragtime-ish solo thing in the middle of the song. The lyrics are kind of meh, but the intrumentals are sick, and it features the sludgiest DT riff ever! (cookie for reference)

36. "Scene Two: II. Strange Deja Vu" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

I really like the chorus here, and I love the way that the Overture transitions right into this song. It's got some awesome guitar palying during the verses and other than that, just all around awesome.

I personally love the last few lines "But I don't mind/I hope to find the truth." I love the way Labrie sings that.

It's fun to see someone else rank their fav songs.  I must have a different taste in DT though.  To me, "The Best of Times" and "Dark Eternal Night" would probably be in my bottom 5 DT songs.  It's nice to see "Only a Matter if Time" get some high ranking though.

Five more...

35. "The Root Of All Evil: VI. Ready / VII. Remove" - Octavarium

This is a pretty cool song, and one of the best parts of the AA suite. The version on Score is awesome and I can really get into the main riff of the song as well as both the guitar and keyboard solo. Overall great track and a great way to start 8VM.

34. In The Presence of Enemies - Systematic Chaos

One of DT's longest songs, and one of my favorites on SC. I combined them because I feel that it is better when they are together. Not much else to say, it's a real great tune and has some of my favorite LaBrie deliveries on it.

33. "The Ytsé Jam" - When Dream & Day Unite

One of DT's best instrumentals, and it's on their debut! Listening to a song like this in the context of the late 80s when this came out really makes you think about how far ahead of their time DT were back then. There's some really cool versions of this song on the live DVDs/CDs/Bootlegs and all of them managed to have the same feel, but at the same time sound extremely fresh, new and exciting. One of the best tunes on WD&DU

32. "Stream of Consciousness" - Train of Thought

Just realized I had two instrumentals in a row. This song would be MUCH higher, but it is about 3-5 minutes too long and thus knocks it down quite a bit. Their are a lot of really awesome riffs, and the Petrucci solos on here are among some of my favorite that he has done.

31. "The Killing Hand" - When Dream & Day Unite

DT's first epic, and my second favorite song on WD&DU. The Dominici version is awesome, but the version that LaBrie sings on Live At The Marquee is much more epic. (Yes, I know it was dubbed) I think that version is my favorite LaBrie moment, period. Anyway, the song has some really awesome parts in it, and I really wish that I could get to hear DT play this song live, along with a bunch of other WD&DU stuff.

I could not agree more.  I think Dominici's vocals are generally good enough on most of the debut, but he doesn't seem to fit well on "The Killing Hand," and listening to him strain to sing the last line of the song is almost painful.  Meanwhile, JLB nailed it (overdubbed or not).  Plus, the live version has that "Another Hand" intro, which is great.

Today's update:

30. "The Ministry of Lost Souls" - Systematic Chaos

My favorite and highest ranking song on SC. Firstly I must mention that the guitar driven outro is among some of JP's most beautiful and heart wrenching work. I feel like crying every time I hear it. Secondly, it has some really awesome lyrics. Thirdly, the instrumental part is really fucking epic. Basically an awesome song that should stay in DT's live repertoire for years to come.

29. "Afterlife" - When Dream & Day Unite

This is my highest ranking song from WD&DU (Sorry Kev, no "Light Fuse and Get Away"). I really love the version of this song that is on Score, but for me the best version is the WD&DU version. Everything about it is perfect in my opinion.

28. "Scene Four: Beyond This Life" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

Awesome song. This remains the only song from Scenes that I have seen DT perform live, and man was it awesome. I love how the lyrics are words from a newspaper article. When bands do things like that I really enjoy it, because it's different and unique. The instrumental section neat also.

27. "Anna Lee" - Falling Into Infinity

One of my favorite DT ballads. I really wish MP would throw this song on their live sets, but he has said that the song feels too "Dereky" (although I disagree) to play. This may be one of DT's most forgotten songs, but it will always have a special spot for me.

26. "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream" - Awake

Another good ballad. Myung has some really sick lyrics here. Hopefully he will write some more because most of the songs he wrote for are impeccable. This song is one of my favorite tracks on Awake. Myung shines not only in lyrics but in bass playing as well. One of his finer showcases overall.

5 more:

25. "Lines In The Sand" - Falling Into Infinity

A great song from FII. The intro with the keys is really, really awesome and I really like the version on Once in a LIVEtime. The guest vocals are a little meh, but its a cool thing about the song that makes it stand out from their catalog.

24. "Disappear" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

DT's saddest song. I know that I posted this story in the Disappear topic, but I read the lyrics to this song to my public speaking class once, and as I was reading them, I fully came to realize how beautiful the words are. It's pretty cool that it's on Live at Budokan and I like that LaBrie sat down for it, I felt that it needed that.

23. "A Mind Beside Itself: I. Erotomania" - Awake

One of DT's best instrumentals. This song is really awesome and it is a great way to start the AMBI suite. The keyboard intro makes this song really stand out for me as one of those songs that I always immediately know whenever I hear it start up. It was a treat seeing DT perform this live.

22. "The Glass Prison: I. Reflection / II. Restoration / III. Revelation" -

The best part of the AA suite is the first part. This song is a real rocker, and has some pretty awesome riffs. Not much else to say about it, it'd be cool to see it live one day. Hopefully they decide to not perform the entirety of the AA suite live, or at least only do it a few times for a DVD, I don't think the entire thing is worthy of taking up almost an entire set of one "Evening With" show.

21. "Under A Glass Moon" - Images & Words

One of the songs that got me into Dream Theater. This song is really cool, and I love the way the song just starts and goes right into the epicness. Petrucci has a really awesome solo on this track. It was cool seeing it on the Score DVD.

Yup, probably my 3rd favorite DT song. Everything is great about it; riffs, vocals, drums, bass, lyrics, and JP's best solo.

I know I'm in the extreme minority, but "The Glass Prison" is probably in my bottom 5-10 DT songs.  It is too much unrelenting heavyness without any moments that come up for air or slow down or let the song breath.  If I'm dealing with a long song, I prefer that it take me more of a journey and mix things up more.  Like Voices.

Weird to see "Erotomania" so low, but hey, to each his own. :)

Today's update (Prepare for BAAW):

20. "A Change of Seasons" - A Change of Seasons [EP]

In all honesty, I've never understood how anyone could rank this song higher than they do. It really isn't as good as most people say it is, and for me, while it's a great song, there are a lot more songs that Dream Theater does that beat this out, by a lot. Had this song been about 10 minutes shorter it would have been much better in my opinion. It feels like it was forced into being 20 minutes, when it really shouldn't have been.

19. "Trial of Tears" - Falling Into Infinity

This song features some awesome lyrics, and I love the feel of it. I was lucky enough to get part of the song during the Schmedly Wilcox Medley that the band did during the touring cycle for SC, and it was opened with JR sitting on the edge of the stage playing with this really cool thing that made the opening to this song awesome and even more atmospherically than it is on FII. This is the best song on FII by quite a bit.

18. "A Nightmare to Remember" - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

This song caught me by surprise when I was ranking these songs. I didn't realize how much I liked it until I made this list. It's pretty incredible and shocked me when I realized I dug this song more than the two I just mentioned on this list. The intro is one of the best openings DT has ever done on an album, and the middle section about the character laying in a hospital bed is even more stunning.

17. "Misunderstood" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I really like this song quite a bit, and I've been lucky enough to see it twice as DT played it both time I saw them. I know a lot of people hate the outro, but for me I think it makes the song 300x better. It's one of the most experimental things DT has ever done and I honestly can't get enough of it. The way the song starts with the simple chordplay riffs and builds into what it becomes is truly a testament to what DT is really capable of.

16. "Scene Six: Home" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

Ahh, Home. I didn't appreciate this song until about 12 or so months ago. For some reason it took a few years to click and up until last year this song probably would have been in my bottom 10 DT songs. Now whenever I listen to it, something about it really just makes me want the song to never end. Not much else to say.. Oh, the Middle Eastern-esque part is really cool too.

Five great choices, definitely!  Four of them would definitely be in my top 20, and the other ("A Nightmare to Remember") is mostly excellent, as well.

I agree that "A Change of Seasons" isn't the end-all be-all of DT songs like many think it is, but it is still terrific and a borderline top 10 DT song in my book.

I also like the outro to "Misunderstood" a lot.  It just works.

ANTR being higher than ACoS (which would probably be around the same area on my list) and TRIAL OF AMAZING FUCKING TEARS makes baby Jesus cry.  I do love Home though, so some small props for that.  Never really got into all of Misunderstood thanks to that stupid outro, but the radio edit on GreateSt HIT mostly fixes that.

Yes, Misunderstood. Probably a top 5 DT song for me. Excellent atmosphere with great lyrics, JLB in top form, and heavy guitars. To top it off, a (for DT standards) pretty experimental, deranged outro. I love it, and I wished DT pursued this direction some more.

Good exercise, and I'm interested in see what is coming next.

BTW, good call on ACOS.  In fact, I actually think it should be rated lower--somewhere in the 20's or 30's.  To be honest, I'm not that much of a fan of DT's really epic songs, at least those that get beyond the 15-20 minute mark.  There are some exceptions--6Degrees has grown on me, and I really love Count of Tuscany, but I find the 20-30 minute songs to be either overly repetitive or simply an exercise in wankery, and that most of them could easily have been better with 5-10 minutes shaved off.

Looking forward the the rest.  Obviously, PMU, LTL, 6DOIT will make the list.  I'm also hoping for Peruvian Skies, Great Debate, Endless Sacrifice, In the Name of God and Surrounded.

15. "Take the Time" - Images & Words

Another cool song off I&W. I'd really like to see this song played live because I feel it'd go over well. The introduction is something really cool that DT only did once, and I think it worked. Classic DT song.

14. "Endless Sacrifice" - Train of Thought

One of my favorites from ToT. The dichotomy of the song from somber, low ended and depressing verses/choruses to the wacky instrumental section is one of my favorite polarities that DT has done. Usually, the wankery of DT gets a little overbearing, but in this case, I feel that it was done pretty well.

13. "Surrounded" - Images & Words

One of the songs that I feel doesn't get enough credit from DT fans. This song has always been one of my favorite DT songs and it always has a special spot for me. I know the guitar solo is never played live because it's really a simple delayed effect, but I adore it. The version of this song on the Chaos In Motion DVD is the best thing about that DVD. the "Mother" solo and the Marillion lyrics just make it such a cool experience.

12. "Blind Faith" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I feel like this song is either a hit or miss for most DT fans, so I'll understand if it pisses some off to see it so high, but it's just incredibly awesome. If anyone thinks that LaBrie shouldn't be writing lyrics then they should listen to this song again. My favorite aprt is the JR piano break in the middle.

11. "Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

The best instrumental DT has ever pulled off. There really aren't enough good things I could say about this song. I think it features something like 30 or so meter signature changes, and it's almost impossible to tap your foot to because of that. Everything about this song reeks of quintessential DT and I'd be thrilled if I got to see it live.

54. "Honor Thy Father" - Train of Thought

It's a great tune, but I feel that it's too short. They could have done so much with it, but it ends too early.

But it's 4 minutes of pure orgasm.  To stretch it out would be to defile its perfection.

Absolutely.  "Hell's Kitchen" is perfect as is. :tup :tup

Honestly, I don't think "Space Dye Vest" is gonna make it.  Quad is a big prog guy, meaning he loves the prog epics a lot, and I see 12 big omissions right now (nine epics plus SDV plus two major winners that aren't that long from SFAM), and two of those are gonna lose out, and I think "Space Dye Vest" will be one of 'em.

Here's the first 3 of the big 10. Time to finally rid the speculation about...

10. "Space-Dye Vest" - Awake

Yes, it made it onto the list. And yes, it falls at number 10. As I've said in the past, I am a massive fan of bands throwing us curve balls that come from no where, and this song is probably the best example of a band doing that across any genre. The use of drone-ish guitars, the minimalistic piano melody, the samples, the emotion, the build, everything about this song is perfect. When the song comes to a head it is just pure musical bliss. There is nothing about this song that isn't downright amazing.

9. "Scene Eight: The Spirit Carries On" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

One of the best and most emotional songs that Dream Theater has done. JP has one of the best solos of all time on this song. The lyrics are also something that I can immediately relate to, what with the spiritual connotation. The version on Score has an impeccable introduction, and the gospel parts on the album version really add to the overall feel of the piece. For a long time this was my favorite DT song but it has since fallen back a little, albeit still in the top ten.

8. "In The Name of God" - Train of Thought

Ahh, ITNoG. The best that ToT has to offer. This song always gave me the chills but a few months ago I was listening to this song with headphones and I realized that towards the end you can hear the chanting of "My Eyes Have Seen the Coming of the Glory of the Lord" and I was literally paralyzed with spinal chills. It was one of the most eerie, yet amazing musical moments that I have had the honor of having. In my opinion, the entirety of ToT builds up to this song, and DT really delivered well.

It's great to see SDV is the top 10.  I know it's a song that people either love or hate, but I've personally always felt a strong connection to the tune.  Good job, Quad!  Can't wait to see the rest.

Good list Quad, even though I vehemently disagree with a lot of it, I've enjoyed following it and I find your opinions on the songs somehow intriguing.

I do share your love for WDADU and Afterlife, which I also think is its best song. :tup

7. "The Count of Tuscany" - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

I didn't know what to do with myself the first time I heard this song. The part from the slow psychedelic guitar driven part to the ending is probably the best finale to an epic that any band has ever written for a song ever. Everything about this song is amazing, from the somber beginnings to the "I, I don't wanna diee!" choruses, to the intrumental parts to the ending. DT really outdid themselves on this song and I was honestly not really expecting anything they'd write lately to ever make it this high.

6. "Metropolis Pt. I: The Miracle and the Sleeper" - Images and Words

The fan favorite. Even though I've never seen this song live myself, I've seen or heard live versions enough times to know that the song sounds really awesome live. This song features some of the coolest riffs that the band ever wrote and features some of LaBrie's best singing. This track always gives me a good pickup whenever I need it.

So, now that we are halfway through the top 10, anyone want to make predictions for my Top 5?
Title: Re: Quad's Top 50 Dream Theater Songs!
Post by: KevShmev on May 17, 2010, 07:59:02 PM
Since you are asking for predictions, I will list the seven other glaring omissions (6-10 were five of the 12 I referred to yesterday):

"Learning to Live"
"Voices"
"Scarred"
"Fatal Tragedy"
"Finally Free"
"Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"
"Octavarium"

Hard to believe two of those can be left off.  Not that I think "6DOIT" is nearly as good as the rest of those, but many do.  Will be interesting to see what didn't make it.
Title: Re: Quad's Top 50 Dream Theater Songs!
Post by: skydivingninja on May 17, 2010, 08:07:38 PM
Of those that Kev listed, I'm going to guess that Scarred and 6DoiT aren't going to be a part of this list, which is crazy when we're talking about 6DoiT.
Title: Re: Quad's Top 50 Dream Theater Songs!
Post by: KevShmev on May 17, 2010, 08:11:07 PM
Heh, I cheated and looked back at the Scarred vs. TDEN thread, and Quad said he preferred TDEN by miles, so it looks like "Scarred" is gonna not make it here.  Bah.  :censored

:p

I think "Fatal Tragedy" will be the other one left off, as I just don't see him leaving 6DOIT's title cut off, and the other three should be no-brainers.  Well, I don't think "Octavarium" is a no-brainer for the top 5; maybe for the top 20, but no way it doesn't make the top 50 altogether.

I'd say Octavarium, 6 Degrees and Learning to Live are given.  I'd say it's going to be Voices and either Pull Me Under or Fatal Tragedy.  However, I can't see any of those three missing the top 50, so your guess is as good as mine.

I'll also say I'm surprised we haven't seen As I Am yet, but I can't see that one in the top five, even though it features some of JP's best guitar work.

Actually based on Quad's LastFM Pull Me Under looks possible/probable.

5. "Octavarium" - Octavarium

Whew, what a trip this song is. There really isn't enough you can say about it. It's got everything, from an awesome PF inspired introduction with JR's best continuum work, to the Yes sounding synth work a bit before halfway through to the big verses that list influence to the fast paces later-middle section to the epic finale. Certainly the best on 8VM and the fifth best song the band ever wrote.

4. "Scene Three: II. Fatal Tragedy - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

This song easily features some of the greatest riffs that DT has ever come up with. It is a quintessential DT song in that it features everything that DT is good at doing in under 10 minutes, so it's one of the best songs to show someone who is getting into the band. The middle section is easily the best instrumental DT has done by miles. It also features amazing vocals by LaBrie and awesome lyrics. It ends with an incredible unison section that always leaves me dazed and confused :lol. Not a bad moment in this song if you ask me.

3. "Learning to Live" - Images & Words

I honestly don't even know where to start with LtL. It's such musical perfection in every aspect. It has LaBrie's highest note on any DT album (I think) and the ending is just one of the best things ever. The "Wait for Sleep" reprise is pretty awesome too. I wish DT would play this song live more for us newer fans, because it'd be pretty sick to see played live in its entirety.

Here is number 2..

2. "Scene Nine: Finally Free" - Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory

The grand finale of the best album ever created clocks in a number two on my controversial list. I'd imagine that this song is going to create quite a bit of controversy, but here it is. I consider this song to be so unbelievable that I only listen to it on rare occasion because often times I don't feel worthy listening to it. I don't even want to mention any specific parts because I feel like that would incorrectly demean other parts of this piece, and I can't just sit here and write a massive essay about the entire thing so I'll just leave it at saying this: For those that disagree with its placement. Listen again, and actually pay attention to it, and let it take you away.

Awesome pick. There are so many mood changes in the song and somehow they all work really well and it doesn't feel cut and paste one bit. One of the best, for sure.

I'd be disappointed to see PMU as number one. I'm really surprised Voices/Scarred isn't on the list yet based on his prior choices.

Here's to number one being either of those two.

EDIT: Yeah, SDOIT isn't on there. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3. Images & Words
4. Train of Thought
5. Octavarium

So, so true.

And there is no way that 6DOIT is Quad's 2nd favorite DT album with the title track not being one of his 50 favorite DT songs, so I think number one is pretty obvious now.

This means, no "Scarred" or "Voices." :eek :eek :eek :eek  Quad might be the only DT fan on this site where that would happen. :p :lol

It just never did anything for me. I've given it at least 30 listens over the past 6 years I've been a DT fan and it has never really done much of anything for me. (The exception being SDV)

It's a good progressive metal album but there are so many songs that are just complete throwaways (Like the first three tracks).

What you like is what you like.  But Awake isn't a "metal album."  There are really only 2 metal songs on it (The Mirror & Lie), maybe 4 if you want to count 6:00 and Caught In A Web.  Even so, that's only 4/11.  I'm not sure how Innocence Faded, Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Scarred, and Space-Dye Vest could be construed as metal.

But you're right about what Pirate posted.  WTF, man.  Why would you piss on his whole thread like that?

1. "You Not Me" - Falling Into Infinity

There are few songs that do for me what "You Not Me" does. Everything about this song is absolutely flawless, from the amazing lyrics crafted by Petrucci and perfected by Desmond Child, to the absolutely stunning guitar solo to the delivery of LaBrie's vocals. One of the other things about this song that absolutely blows my mind is the musical reference to "Raise the Knife" that appears about halfway through on the keyboards. Speaking of keyboards, this song also has my favorite keyboard riffs delivered by Derek out of all of the material he worked on during his run with Dream Theater. Overall, a great song, and one of my favorites, perhaps my all-time favorite.

OK I'll stop fooling around.

1. "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I guess you all saw it coming, but yea, 6DOIT is my favorite DT song. The only possible negative thing I can say about this song is that I feel the Overture drags a little bit, but other than that it is pure musical perfection, and I always find myself enjoying it whenever I listen to it. In particular, the "Solitary Shell" movement has had an extremely enormous impact on my life. It was the first time in my life that I had listened to a song and felt that the artist had written a song about me. I related to much to the lyrics that I was listening to SS everyday for quite a while. I don't have autism, but I was a pretty lonesome person throughout most of my Middle School/High School years and the lyrics literally describe me to a T, and back in my sophomore year of High school when I first heard this song I was so stunned and amazed at the beauty of the song that I knew right then and there that DT would be one of my favorite bands, and that "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" would be one of my favorite songs.

:tup The only drawback of 6DOIT for me is Goodnight Kiss. The guitar solo is sick, but the song itself is torture for me to listen to...

Every other part of 6DOIT is amazing though.  :metal I love the overture especially.

I like all of the individual parts of the song, but for me, "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" is best listened to in pieces.  As a whole, it seems a bit choppy at times and doesn't flow that well, IMO, but each individual part is still good enough for me to like it as a whole, even if I almost never listen to the whole thing all the way through.  But the last two minutes is still the most unnecessary thing ever.  It was almost like they made the fadeout extra long just to make a super long song even longer.  Otherwise, what was the purpose?

Regardless, nice job with this thread! :tup :tup

And I think that MP just wanted to copy the ending of "A Day In The Life", which is why the song goes on for two minutes at the end.

It was still unnecessarily long.  The fadeout is nearly two minutes, while the "A Day in the Life" fadeout is around 40 seconds before the looped ending (or whatever you want to call it) kicks in.

And I am staying out of this "Voices" debate...for now. :lol :lol

Hard for me, too, to comprehend "Voices" being in someone's bottom 10 (it's my number 1), but to each his own. Really enjoyed the thread, though.  It provided some new and interesting perspectives on DT's catalog.

Yea I definitely agree, but I don't feel that it takes away from the song seeing as it is the end. Had it been in the middle then yea, it'd be ridiculous.

You don't have to listen to the last 2 minutes is what I'm saying.

Great list. 6DOIT is a great song, and would likely be in my top 5, though if I did a list I'd be more inclined to rank them by movements.

It's sad to see no Voices in the top 10, but I'm not too put off by not seeing Scarred.  Though I like Scarred, I think it's easily one of the most overrated DT songs.  The intro jam is cool, but James sounds terrible on the verses and the chorus is one of DT's worst. The song isn't even good until it quiets down into that epic do you feel you don't know me anymore segment, though the subsequent instrumental section and outro are both cool.

1 minute and 40 seconds of a 42 minute song is about equal to 70 seconds of a 20 minute song. You can't tell me that there aren't 70 seconds of bad music in "2112"  :loser: :lol

EDIT: Shit, there actually aren't.

Why should you have to listen to the two minutes of silence for it to be your favorite song? Especially if all your skipping is silence.

Octivarium is one of my favorite DT songs but sometimes I skip the four minute intro just because I'd rather get to a more interesting part of the song. Does this mean it's not worthy of being my favorite song?

I'm saying I don't like the intro by the way. I love it, I just am sometimes not in the mood for it.

I never said the ending was bad music, just that it was unnecessary.  A long fadeout at about half the length they did it at would have been more than sufficient.

And, yes, "2112" is perfection from start to finish. :metal

That is more about time probably than the content of the song.  Heck, sometimes, if pressed for time, I listen to just the first two parts of "2112."  I guess I am just different; I can't imagine one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands being one where I routinely skip a certain part of the song, assuming I have the time to listen to the song, if it is a long one.

It's really only your favorite if you made a loop of nothing but Jordan's intro to the song on Score and you listen to nothing but that.  That's a true fan.  Likewise an 80 minute loop on cd of nothing but the last 2 minutes of Six Degrees would also show true fandom.  And, by the way, that outro is even longer if you count "As I Am."

You're right, in my case it's more about time because I do like the intro.

But I can't imagine why something can't be your favorite song because you skip two minutes of silence at the end. Because the silence contributes so much to the song.  ::)

Nobody hates Voices. Not even Blobbers. Why don't you like it so much?

Because it is a bad song. (By DT standards)

This isn't a valid reason. There has to be something more specific

You just agreed with my point.  The long fadeout doesn't really contribute to the song, therefore making it unnecessary, which is what I have said it is all along.

OK, gave another honest listen to Awake. It's been quite a while since I've spun it (about a year).

After one "new-listen" I'd say it still ranks in 9th. SC is definitely worse. But at the same time I can't say it's better than anything else by them.

I think it was one of those things where the lat time I listened to it, I wasn't that happy with it, so never went back, and always remembered it being way worse than it was.

Still though, Neither "Scarred" or "Voices" would make my top 50. I just can't get into those songs. "Erotomania" might have been a bit higher now though.

Excellent choice my friend. SDOIT is my 2nd favourite song. I just think the whole way through (including overture) it never drags on, it never gets boring, and it keeps me excited the whole way through. About to Crash(both of em) are the highlights for me. Great list Quad! While SDOIT isn't my number 1 by any stretch, I still think it's at least a very fitting number 1. While I'm upset at the lack of Voices as it is one of my top 10 DT songs, I'm not gonna rant at you about it, each to their own. Aside from Voices, I also agree with you about Awake, it's in my bottom 2 DT albums.

Well, I got it done early.  Here we go!

50. Forsaken-Systematic Chaos
Behold!  One of the two tracks from SC that will show up on this list.  Is it pop-metal?  Yes.  Do I care?  Absolutely not.  Any instance in which Jordan uses a piano on a DT song is great, in my opinion, its just a great sound combined with the darkness of the rest of the song.  As an added bonus, the lyrics about vampires don't sound completely ridiculous like certain other songs DT have released lately, even if that video is very WTF.

49. Wither-Black Clouds & Silver Linings
I like this song because its Dream Theater's big "fuck you" to anyone who thinks a good power ballad can't be written anymore.  Despite that, I think the piano version appearing on the Wither EP is a massive improvement.  It gives James his chance to shine with great emotional vocals without needing to go into the stratosphere in the awesome way he usually does.  Plus, like I've already said: JR + Piano + DT = Flawless victory.

48. Misunderstood-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
All I have to say is "Thank God for radio edits."  This song has some awesome instrumentation, like all those little played-backwards bits before the pre-chorus.  Plus it features some of John Petrucci's best lyrics, and that chorus is awesome.  My only beef with it is the outro (like you couldn't see that coming).  The scales on the keys and the riff in the background is fine, but when the guitars just start making noise...not really a fan.  It just sort of drags, but the entire first half is enough for this song to be included.

47. Only a Matter of Time-When Day and Dream Unite
Really the best reason why this is on the list are the vocals/lyrics, how everything just sort of runs together, I always thought it was pretty cool, not to mention the epic ending that DT is pretty much known for now.

46. Scarred-Awake
Oh God! *raises flame shield*  So listen, its not that I hate the song, its just that there are lots of times where it just doesn't work for me.  Yes, it has some of James' best vocal moments, and the intro/outro are amazing, but those are some of the most abrupt transitions I've ever heard in a song.  For example, the super-grind/balls/chunk section starting at 7:02, its just not that interesting to me.  I'm also not too big a fan of the "blood change me" sections until the end of that middle section that starts around 5:12.  Despite those flaws, its benefits are enough to put it here.

Well not really offended. It's one of the most controversial songs by DT anyways. But to be frank, not very interesting first list. Good to see Wither in the list, though.

Just remember guys, I at least included "Scarred" on my list, unlike a certain other top 50 DT list-maker!  Now lets continue: its soft ballad day today (with one exception).

45. Hollow Years-Falling Into Infinity
The Budokan version is incredible, I'll admit, but since we're looking at studio versions of songs, that version won't be mentioned.  And yet, this song still gets a place on the list.  DT are great at writing huge progressive epics (that aren't named "In the Presence of Enemies"), but a quality that lots of people seem to overlook is their skill at composing short pop/rock songs.  "Hollow Years" is a great example.

44. Repentance-Systematic Chaos
The best track on SC and the one with the most staying power, in my opinion.  I love the voices that the band brought in, the eerie, Opeth-style intro and outro, and of course, John Petrucci's godly solo.  It gets even better when you listen to all of the AA suite front-to-back.

43. The Silent Man-Awake
A nice, acoustic simple pop song after the heavy grandeur of "Voices," its an absolutely essential part of the "Mind Beside Itself" suite that I find it a criminal offense that DT don't play it after the first two parts of the suite anymore.  I also consider it to be the predecessor to "These Walls" lyrically, which means this song, for me, was pretty relateable, since I was (and still mostly am) fairly quiet out in public.

42. One Last Time-Scenes From a Memory
This used to be my favorite song on SFAM.  Seriously.  Jordan's piano and James' voice with the unmistakable refrain at the beginning that you first hear on "Overture 1928" make for a killer combination.  These little tracks that you love as much as the clear centerpieces are the reason I love great concept albums.

41. Ytse Jam-When Day and Dream Unite
Commonly referred to as DT's "answer" to Rush's "YYZ," the intro and main theme are one of the most recognizable to any DT fan.  I'm actually surprised they don't play it live as much anymore.  With their tendency to improvise in songs like "Hollow Years" and "Metropolis," it sounds like this tune would be great for them now.

44. Repentance-Systematic Chaos
The best track on SC and the one with the most staying power, in my opinion.  I love the voices that the band brought in, the eerie, Tool-style intro and outro, and of course, John Petrucci's godly solo.  It gets even better when you listen to all of the AA suite front-to-back.

Other than that, I agree with this list so far.

Home is a slightly more blatant ripoff, but it has a very reminiscent feel to that of 46&2, imo at least. Maybe it's because I'm a Tool fanboy I claim to hear them in everything.  :-\

I hate that such a great solo by JP is wasted in what is, to me, an otherwise boring song ("Forsaken").

But I agree with you, sky, that "Repentance" is the best song on SC, and I, too, am surprised at how "Ytse Jam" is never played anymore.  Except for the bits in the Instrumedley and the WDADR show, has it even been played at all since Rudess joined the band?

40. The Great Debate-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
This was actually one of the first Dream Theater songs I heard after my friend gave me SFAM and 8VM.  It took a while to grow on me, but its a really cool track.  When I was in high school, I thought it was ingenious how the samples and James' voice were split between the left and right speakers, even though now it seems like a bit of a gimmick.  Oh well, its got a very groovy riff and one of the best transitions into an instrumental section.

39. Disappear-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
I consider this to be DT's most introspective song.  Its quiet, never follows a power ballad formula, and has this really eerie feeling with JR's keyboard work in the background.  The lyrics are some of the best James has written, its a shame that the last song he wrote was "Prophets of War," because this song proves he can do so much better.  I think its ridiculous that Mike will only play this twice, I'm sure fans would have a nice lighter moment with it.

38. 6:00-Awake
*drumroll sounds* "SIX O CLOCK ONNA CHRISTMAS MORNIN'" Oh man, what an orgasmic intro.  The song does a really good job of setting the tone for the rest of Awake, you've got Kevin Moore's very cool patches that almost sound like a guitar for his solo, James' throaty but still stratospheric vocals, and Mike is laying down a very rockin' groove.  Its also great to wake up to on Christmas morning, just to be a nerd.

37. A Fortune in Lies-When Day and Dream Unite
Despite the variable quality of music of the rest of WDADU, this is a badass way to start it.  If I had to pick my favorite part, it would the grand majestic intro into the fast-paced gallop right before the vocals start.  If James was singing on WDADU, and it sounded like the Live at the Marquee version, this song would probably be much higher.

36. Innocence Faded-Awake
Someone's going to call WTF on this, I know it.  Score was the third DT release I owned, which introduced me to Metropolis, 6DOIT, Raise the Knife, and this gem that no one seems to talk about unless its in relation to mishearing what James says.  I'm still amazed that James could hit those notes in 2006 the way he could in 1994.  I've made it no secret that if James wasn't such a great singer, I would not be listening to DT, or branching out into other music like, and this song was really key in making me see just HOW good he is.

Also, good to see The Great Debate! Used to be a huge fan of it before. I'm just disappointed at the fact that Disappear is higher than Great Debate.

Alright, here's the update for today.  I might miss tomorrow's update, but I'm sure your lives won't be impacted THAT much by it.

35. Another Day-Images & Words
Lookie, another power ballad on the list from DT!  Of course, since it was the year 1992, James was on fire, so his vocals on this song are a big part of the reason its so high, especially in the "They took pictures of our dreams..." section.  I also really like the alto sax, it gives it a pretty old 90s feel to it, but in this song it actually works incredibly well.  Its also the only track from Images that actually sounds better on the remix included with GreateSt HIT, since you can actually hear more of the sax that was mixed out in the song.

34. Sacrificed Sons-Octavarium
Structurally, its kind of a typical DT song.  It has a pretty cool JM bass break, the orchestra during the instrumental section and the ending, and one of DT's better instrumental jam sections compared with other recent output.  I think the lines "Watch them preach I can't relate / If God's true love are acts of hate" is great and leads perfectly into the chorus, its one of my favorite moments on the Octavarium album.

33. Fatal Tragedy-Scenes From a Memory
John Myung's last lyrical contribution.  Unfortunately, the lyrics are not the highlight of this song, but the way that it is an embodiment of everything DT is today.  Its good.  Listen to it.

32. Raise the Knife-Falling Into Infinity Demos
Its a shame this song didn't make it onto FII, but with two godly epics already on the album, I think another might have bogged it down with the more commercial approach of the album.  This song features Derek firing on all cylinders (I sometimes wish he had stayed on for just one more album before Rudess joined) and some of Mike's best lyrics.  He can write some great stuff, just as long as he stays away from the super-ballsy metal songs that aren't part of the AA suite.

31. As I Am-Train of Thought
There will be one more Train of Thought track on this list.  Now you know exactly what track it is.  Somewhat immature lyrics, but sometimes when you're pissed off at something you don't really notice it, and that's what this song is meant to do.  Play it in the car, headbang, bask in Petrucci's great solo, smile pants.  Kinda hilarious to hear James sing "fuck" though.

When you get this: As I Am is a great song, and I'm glad you mentioned the solo. For me, that solo is a text book example of NOT wank.  It's melodic, perfectly placed, impressive, and goes on for just the right amount of time. Wish DT did more of 'em like that.

Sorry to hear that, SDN!

I, too, am surprised at how "Ytse Jam" is never played anymore. Except for the bits in the Instrumedley and the WDADR show, has it even been played at all since Rudess joined the band?
No.  And it's tragic.
Yes it has.

No, it hasn't. I need to learn to read.

I love that Monty Python sketch  :lol.  Thanks for the good wishes guys.  As thanks, here's an update!

30. Peruvian Skies-Falling Into Infinity
One of the standout tracks from FII, I like how it starts off with a very eerie vibe, until the heavy bridge and a super-sustained note from James leads into an orgasmic Petrucci solo, and then changes direction to super-balls.  I particularly like the bass breaks in this song as opposed to, say, the bass break in "Sacrificed Sons" because Myung's tone is a lot cleaner, he uses a lot of distortion and other weird effects on the later albums.  I think one of the reasons I love FII is because the mix is so great, I don't think this song would be as high on the list without it.

29. The Root of All Evil-Octavarium
From the second DT album I ever owned, I remember drumming the "This Dying Soul" drum pattern on my desk/steering wheel/skulls of my enemies for weeks.  I still do it occasionally.  Looking at it after a few years, I love how after all the wank in ToT, Jordan sticks it to everyone who says he can't play a musical solo and plays one perfectly in this song.  Its definitely one of his best.

28. Speak to Me-Falling Into Infinity Demos
I never understood why this song is never talked about much, but its usually in the final round of the survivor, so I guess I'm okay with that.  Musically, the song reminds me of "I Walk Beside You," maybe because of that U2 vibe, but unlike IWBY, this song still sounds like pure Dream Theater.  I really like how the song gets very spacey when you get to the chorus.  Personally, it was a great song to listen to due to an ex- girlfriend of mine way back when.  I always think of her when I hear this song.

27. To Live Forever
I'm sure I sound like a broken record by extolling James' virtues as a singer at every possible opportunity.  But...DAMN he can sing!  I like the extra verse version, it really adds a kind of finality to the song that I think would have been lacking without it.  It's one of the most memorable lines in the DT catalog, in my opinion.  The way it flows into the instrumental section, and all the subtleties in that section is just masterful songwriting.  I don't think there's a reason this couldn't have been a hit back in 92/94.

26. Surrounded-Images & Words
In before "it sounds like Queen lol," since I've never heard that particular song.  Regardless, like every track on Images and Words, its perfect.  Kevin Moore put some great imagery into the lyrics, and James sings them with great passion.  I can't believe he can still sing them like he could back in '92 (yet MP won't let him sing the second verse of "Take the Time" :().  The solo is shreddy, yes, but its great, and more importantly, memorable shred, something that DT has lacked sometimes in more recent songs.  Its not out of place and fits perfectly with the whole song.  Its not enough to write an album of epics because fans like epics, its more important to look back at the songwriting and what made those songs and albums so revered.

"Speak to Me" is great, but the demo version sounds rather lifeless.  To me, it is all about the live version from 5 Years in a Livetime.  I never think to put that song very high on my list of favorite DT songs, but I should.  It is terrific.

And we can never talk about how amazing "Surrounded" is often enough. :hat

Agreed. Musical bliss! And the solo isn't really shreddy as much as it just has a ton of delay on it, right?

You're so right in saying that DT hasn't had much memorable shredding recently, that hook is great and while I probably prefer the CiM version for the rest of the song, it really misses that solo. Also what Queen song, I genuinely hadn't heard this comparison before? Anyway great list, I agree with most of it so far.

Post by: skydivingninja on June 01, 2010, 03:59:57 PM
I think the name of Queen song is something like "Mother Father," but that's a Journey song, so I'm not too sure.

25. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
DT's longest song ever.  The entire song is great, and I have to disagree violently with anyone who criticizes the song for lacking flow or cohesion.  I love how its set up like its own concept album, with main themes constantly making appearances thoughout.  Plus, the grand, epic, orchestral sound of it all was one of the aspects of DT that attracted me to them so much in the first place.  My favorite parts would be the epic ending, "Losing Time/Grand Finale," and the pianoy/rocking goodness of both "About to Crash" sections.

24. The Shattered Fortress-Black Clouds & Silver Linings
A perfect close to the 12 step suite.  Once again I will disagree violently with anyone who criticizes this song for recycling a lot of material from the previous four songs.  I think its brilliantly done, and the way all the pieces just naturally fall together to create this amazing meta-song is nothing short of mind-blowing.  When I first listened to Black Clouds, the beginning of this song gave me goosebumps.  It still does from time to time.  Its one of my favorite DT songs to put on in the car too.

23. Erotomania-Awake
DT has this great collection of riffs and melodies from its early days that seem to be ingrained in every fan's mind.  Ytsejam, Metropolis, Pull Me Under, New Milennium, and this song are all great examples.  Those four opening chords are all anyone needs to hear before they launch into the rest of the song in their heads.  This (along with pretty much every song from this point forward) show DT at their compositional best, and along with "The Silent Man" teaser, make it a fantastic journey without needing any super-literal lyrics to convey that feeling.  Blob's live animation for this song, going through each album cover, captures it perfectly.

22. Under a Glass Moon-Images & Words
I love Images.  That's no secret.  I sleep with it at night when I'm lonely sometimes.  This song serves a very key purpose in context of the whole album.  See, every song from "Pull Me Under" to "Metropolis" has been mind-shaterringly awesome, but while any lesser band would put an okay ballad to let the audience settle down and find loose pieces of skull, they instead offer this rocking number, with soaring vocals and one of the best examples of the "guitar solo-keyboard solo-unison" instrumental section that DT is so fond of.  Petrucci deserves most of that praise.  Its one of his most memorable solos.  I'd almost call it his best, but I feel this song has finally been dethroned by a song that you'll see later on the list.

21. Pull Me Under-Images & Words
The greatest hit itself!  No one seems to talk about it, but I do remember a thread a year or two back where the question was asked if people liked it.  I don't think I saw one negative comment there.  There's a reason its their only hit: memorable intro, heavy riffage that puts any of the attempt at "balls" on Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos to shame, and a catchy chorus.  Its a great song, and I'm not really sure how I can explain why any further.  Its not really a song you can dissect why you enjoy it, you just do.

Thank you for this.  I also feel like PMU doesn't receive any praise, mostly because of its radio status...it really is a fabulous song, so different sounding from other material around that time.  It's a perfect introduction into Dream Theater, even nearly two decades later.

"Father to Son" is the Queen song that has a keyboard part eerily similar to the one in "Surrounded."  In both cases, it starts off the song, but then the songs are completely different after that.

Good to see The Shattered Fortress this high. Although it's a mixed bag of all the other 12 step songs, it's actually decent. I'd rate this higher than all the other 12 steps except Glass Prison, but it's pretty close.

Updateupdateupdateupdate

20. New Milennium-Falling Into Infinity
DT really seem to be in their element with eight-minute rock songs.  As I mentioned earlier, the opening to this song is a classic DT melody, but my favorite part of this song is the bass.  It's probably John Myung's greatest bass song from start to finish.  Derek Sherinian also shines, as if he's trying to make a point that he fits in with DT for every doubting fan that first heard FII back in '97.  I say he certainly proved himself, and I always wonder what if Scenes had been made with Derek instead of Jordan.  I'm sure the results would have been just as awesome.

19. Finally Free-Scenes From a Memory
DT's only break from the "epic album ender" in their whole discography in that it ends on more of a subdued, dark note.  Not just the plot twist at the end (if you don't know it by now what are you doing here?), but even the music fading out suggests something ominous.  I can't imagine the song ending any other way, its great.  It also features some of the most memorable, sing-alongable vocal melodies in the catalog, to the point where you don't care if you're singing Victoria's lines as loud as you can in the car.

18. Lifting Shadows off a Dream-Awake
James is a great singer yadda yadda yadda.  A song from Awake that never gets talked about enough.  Its not even a DT power ballad its just...something else.  Kev's keyboards work wonders in this song, and the quality of sound textures in DT songs has only reached this level a few times since he left the band.

17. The Glass Prison-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Oh hello John Myung, that's a cool riff you're playing, kinda slow and quiet, how's this song going to turn out OH GOD SOMEONE JUST DROPPED A TWO TON WEIGHT ON MY TESTICLES.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems to be everyone's first reaction to "the Glass Prison."  Heavy without trying to be someone else, MP vocals that don't rupture your eardrums, and shredtastic instrumental sections that stick in your mind.  I'm not really sure how I should really feel about this song, because while its amazingly great, it is pretty much DT's inspiration for writing Train of Thought, one of their worst albums.

16. The Count of Tuscany-Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Hands down, of of the best written songs DT have ever written.  The entire intro, from the guitar solo, to the harmonics, the grand, sweeping chords, is one of the great DT moments ever.  The metal riffing that comes later is very good, and the instrumental section at the end of the first part of vocals sounds like JR "circus music," but fits perfectly and doesn't sound corny!  Then there's the "Trial of Tears" section followed by the DT epic ending.  So why isn't it top ten material?  Those.  Stupid.  Fucking.  Lyrics.  We've heard enough about them, and lyrics usually don't bother me too much in a song, but I like good lyrics, and these could have been okay with some editing and realizations that singing "All the finest wines improve with age" sounds silly.

Alright, thanks for being patient, here's a fun update.  Going to start doing two a day after this, then slowing to one a day for the top five.  Here goes!

15. A Change of Seasons-A Change of Seasons EP
The classic DT epic at a very respectable number fifteen.  This song and I have an odd relationship.  I know just how great it is, but I never really remember until I listen to it again and my eyeballs are falling out of their sockets.  I find it hard to believe that the same guy who wrote "Burning My Soul" and "Constant Motion" also wrote the lyrics to this song.  When Mike Portnoy writes about something close to home, he really hits it out of the park.  The "carpe diem" theme throughout is a very relatable topic, while never trying to really force you to acknowledge it, everything just fits together perfectly.  The music is great too, but you knew that, didn't you?

14. Voices-Awake
So...seeing this song live.  How can I describe it?  Orgasmic?  Mindblowing?  Religious?  All of the above?  Well, its a great piece of work.  The second verse is one of James' best moments, he's doing any awesome wailing, but the growl in his voice and the high pitch is simply amazing.  There are very few people who can really do that with their voice.  Petrucci's lyrics are hands-down the best he's ever written.  Apparently all he did was read medical journals and tried to convey what goes on in the mind of a schizophrenic in the song, but when you add some religious imagery, you get all sorts of deep ambiguous, if unintentional, meanings to the song.  If you can find different meanings in the lyrics of the song and can somehow make it apply to you, without the artists intention, then the artist has accomplished something amazing.  I wish Petrucci could do this more often nowadays.

13. Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand-Falling Into Infinity
I know they're technically two songs but SHUT UP THIS IS MY LIST I DO WHAT I WANT.  *ahem*  So how happy are we that Kevin Shirley took "Hell's Kitchen" out of "Burning My Soul" to create an entire new song as a perfect preface to the first big epic of the album?  Me, I'm super happy.  Falling Into Infinity has a lot of great groove in it, and adding King's X vocalist Doug Pinnick to this song doesn't hurt at all.  The main riff in particular can get stuck in my head for days, if a different band had written it, everyone might know it by now.

12. The Spirit Carries On-Scenes From a Memory
First, I cannot stress enough how personal this song is to me.  Following the death of my grandfather in 2006 and my grandma just last week, its been one of the most helpful ways I've coped with the loss of loved ones.  Is it the best song on the subject?  Probably not, but it was there for me through tough times, and that's why its a huge sentimental favorite.  Plus, it was a power ballad when no one was doing those things anymore (at least when I was just discovering the band), and the great reprise of "Regression" lyrics is one of DT's most powerful moments.  I really, REALLY need to see this song live, as it seems like the sort of classic song to join the ranks of "Pull Me Under" and the next song...

11. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper-Images & Turds
THE definitive Dream Theater song.  If anyone ever asks you what the band sounds like, play this.  Arguably their most universally popular song (amongst the fanbase, anyway), its easy to see why: the instrumental section.  There's wank, unbelievable amounts of it, in fact, but its tasteful wank, its wank that fits together with the wank surrounding it, its memorable wank, its wank that you can sing with, its an excuse for me to use "wank" with positive connotations as many times as I can in the same wanking sentence!  Lyrically, what I said earlier about "Voices" doesn't quite ring true here.  Anyone listening would have no idea that the song was about Rome, but I guess Yes fans have been saying that for forty years now, so I guess we can't complain too much about nonsense lyrics as long as they sound nice. *looks at UAGM*

Re: LITS main riff.  Looked it up: "The main riff came from something that Derek had written and we had started working on during some of the soundchecks on tour," revealed John Petrucci in an interview with Guitarist (Lifting Shadows, 2nd edition, p. 206).

Sorry, when I read the words "Awake tour," all I could think about was that video about "the real reason KM left Dream Theater," where Petrucci pronounces tour "tur."  So I had that vid on the mind and then thought what you said was also a funny reason for KM not wanting to go on the tour.

Ok - you go inside my head; then come back out and tell me it doesn't make sense.

10. The Best of Times-Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Another very sentimental, but incredibly good song.  Mike Portnoy's lyrics on BC&SL absolutely dominated Petrucci's to the point where, if they stayed at this level, I wouldn't mind if he took over Petrucci's role as main lyricist.  The only place where this song falters is the line "thank you for my life," not because of the actual content, it just sounds awkward in context of the song.  Even so, its an amazingly beautiful song.  Jordan's piano, violin, and acoustic guitar gracefully introducing the Rush-like riff, then exploding into something that doesn't sound like anything Dream Theater or any other band have done, musically.  Its a very old-prog sort of song, but doesn't fall into the common trappings of modern old-prog bands, this song sounds modern and truly unique, save the few seconds of Rush-ness.  Its also Petrucci's best solo ever, shreddy but emotional and memorable.  I can't wait to see it live!

9. These Walls-Octavarium
Another sentimental favorite from my second Dream Theater album.  I'm not exactly the world's most social guy in person, it takes me a while to come out of my shell and really be myself around people, but once it happens, I'm great.  Back in high school, when I discovered DT, this was one of the songs that really stuck with me throughout those four years.  I'm not sure if it actually helped or not or if I just grew up, but either way I'm attached to this song.

Strongly disagree because at this level you're talking about the lyrics just don't do it no matter who writes them.

I really wish DT would go in that direction again as well.  Perhaps explore even further into the melodic prog arena (not TALW, but more like the intro to 8vm, intro to ToT, or even something a little heavier like These Walls).

Why are you apologizing in THIS thread  :lol

8. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu-Scenes From a Memory
Once again, technically two songs.  Once again, my list, bitches.  The first DT songs I ever heard (well, after "Regression" anyway) and they blew me away.  1928 is the perfect example of a rock opera overture.  Recurring musical themes, sweeping orchestral sounds, just absolute brilliance condensed in three minutes.  When I was first listening to the band, after hearing the eargasm of the overture, all I thought was "now we just need a great singer," and boom, James LaBrie descended from heaven as if to personally say "go my son, and rock."

7. Take the Time-Images & Words
Overall, this is probably my favorite James LaBrie song.  Of course I can't sing along with 75% of it due to the range, but hey.  In addition to James, every member is firing on all cylinders: Kev and JP get that badass unison, JM gets all the bass grooves, MP gets his awesome fills.  Its also the perfect length at eight minutes, too short it would be missing something, too long it would have just dragged.  Eight minute rock songs are absolutely perfect for DT, they're at their best when they're rocking out.

If we're talking about the strength of albums, A Fortune in Lies, Only a Matter of Time, Ytse Jam, The Killing Hand, and Afterlife beat the tar out of a mostly-crap album with As I Am, Vacant, and ITNOG.

6. In the Name of God-Train of Thought
Back when I made this list, it was above TTT for me.  Now I think its below it, but that's the danger with these big 'ol lists.  Its a very heavy song, no doubt about that, but my favorite bit is the eerie quiet part with bass and drums and very sparse JR accompaniment.  The way James is screaming in the background after the quasi-electronic part is also pretty godly.  At first, I wasn't too fond of the "Flight of the Bumblebee" style solo, but I've grown to love it (and JMX's bass beneath it).  In fact, ToT and 8VM were the last albums to feature audible JMX throughout most of the album.  What gives DT?

This is actually the reason I'm not such a fan of ITNOG...the solo annoys the living hell out of me.  The rest of the song is great, but I literally shut the song off every time the solo begins.  Or at least fast forward to the reprise of the main theme.

I'd like to know this too.  I love that bass line he throws down starting @ 8:36 in INTOG -- more of those, please!

5. Home-Scenes From a Memory
Overture 1928 got me into Dream Theater in a big way, and convinced my classic rock-snob self that there was modern music worth checking out.  However, it was this song that did so much more for me in terms of musical discovery.  Prior to this song, in my mind, metal was either like Metallica or Death.  decent music, but awful awful vocals.  Hair/glam 80s metal was an exception, because it really wasn't that heavy.  Up to this point in the album, the band had stayed with a mostly classic rock vibe, and then this little number starts, atmospheric and eerie, with an Indian/Eastern flair until the built-up tension makes everything break, and then...
WOMP WOMP
To my fifteen-year-old self, this was the heaviest shit I had ever heard.  And it was awesome.  What really sold me again was James' vocals, which convinced me that there must be more awesome metal like this out there.  I was half right.  There is more awesome metal out there, but none of it is like "Home."

Okay.

4. Blind Faith-Six Inches of Inner Turbulence
I know this is a very "love it or hate it" song.  Clearly I'm in the "love it" category.  As much as I love this song, I have mixed feelings towards it.  First, Jordan Rudess really shines here, this is really his song.  The keyboard solo is memorable and fitting, the unison is godlike, and that piano interlude is orgasmic.  James isn't doing anything spectacular vocally, but his lyrics are the best he's written for the band so far.  However, this song is somewhat responsible for most 8+ minute Dream Theater songs, kind of like how "The Glass Prison" was the inspiration for most of Train of Thought, "Blind Faith" seems to be responsible for the structure of many new Dream Theater songs that go like this: Longish intro-verse-2nd verse-chorus-verse-bridge-guitar solo/keyboard solo-keyboard/guitar solo-unison-chorus again.  I'm not sure what it is about these newer ones, but they lack the life of songs like "Take the Time" and "Blind Faith."  But that doesn't matter too much.  What does matter is that this song is amazingly awesome, and a very good representation of modern DT.

I have the same problem.  I actually really like the rest of the song, but just something about the chorus bugs me...could be the disjointed transition between the verses/chorus every single time, but it's not like that's uncommon in DT's music.  Not sure why I'm not a fan of it.

3. Octavarium-Octavarium
This song was pretty instrumental in solidfying my status as a DT fan.  I loved the nuggets.  I can see pretty clearly now that they're very gimmicky, but they worked, dammit!  I can still recite the lyrics to "Full Circle" on command.  I like how musically, it starts off fairly calm, very Floyd-like, but then once "Medicate" finishes it turns into a retro-prog fest, but here's the kicker: it doesn't sound like retro-prog the way Spock's Beard or Beardfish do.  It sounds fresh, and modern, and I can't shove it into another band's sound.  Jordan's playing is at its absolute best, the instrumental section between "Medicate" and "Full Circle" is probably the catchiest one since "Metropolis."  Of course, the ending also signifies everything I love about the band, the buildup to the climax, followed by "Razor's Edge" and the big, majestic, epic ending, followed by MOAR NUGGETZ ZOMG.  It is a quintessential Dream Theater song and should not be looked over by anyone.

So close to number one now...

2. Learning to Live-Images and Words
By now I don't think I have to mention the James LaBrie famous F# special, though I guess I just did.  So what?  Fuck off.  It starts off with the 80s synths that will deceive you at first into thinking this song might be...bad, even though the melody is just fine, but despite the initially somewhat dated sound, the sound meanders through so many different sounds and moods.  You have the semi-ominous bassline as the vocals begin, the triumphant sort of intro, the flamenco bit, the climatic solo, and so on and so on.  Petrucci's solo is one of his best, behind "The Best of Times," "Under a Glass Moon," and "A Certain Song That Shant Be Named Yet" for me.  These are also John Myung's best lyrics, you can actually get some kind of relatable meaning out of them, whether or not you knew the song was meant to be about AIDS, whereas I still don't really know what "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream" is about.  Its absolutely brilliant, and I wish DT would return to the lighter, but still rockin', side of modern prog a bit more than they do now.

He may have said it on an interview, but there's no evidence whatsoever in the lyrics that this song is about AIDS.

Fantastic choice.  This song is pretty much always in my Top 2.  It's exact place rotates sometimes with ACOS.

Yep, LtL is my number two as well. I agree with whoever said that ToT will be number 1, even though it's not in my top 10.  :-\

I'm saying that hadn't you've read the interview where he stated that this soing is about "AIDS", in a million years, YOU, the listener and reader, wouldn't have get that that was the message he was trying to put across.

Isn't this a bit of a moot point? There's nothing in the song that couldn't be applied to AIDS at all, and with a lot of songs the meaning isn't necessarily obvious without clarification from the lyricist.

Exactly, and there's nothing bad about it. Also, if a song is left open for several interpretations at first, it's perfectly fine; and more often than not, the lyricist doesn't really explain the meaning of the lyrics, but leaves it open. So what?

True. But there's always that little part of you that would want the lyrics to be explained, just out of pure curiosity and to see if your interpretation fits with the original meaning.

I think for DT that's a fair enough argument, but bands like Tool have real strength in that their lyrics are mysterious and spark discussions. With more abstract stuff like that I think it's right that they're not revealed.

I've mentioned my favorite DT song on this board many times before, but here it is...

1. Trial of Tears-Falling Into Infinity
No words are needed to explain its greatness.

Anticlimactic indeed, though in a sense of no description. I like reading explanations because it brings light to songs I love (sometimes pointing something out I haven't thought of) and encourages me to give them a listen.
