How's it going everyone?

I was wondering if anyone knew much about the Newport Music hall ?  I was thinking about taking the drive out that way for the Off date for Dream Theater.  I would be making a 7 hour drive.  Is it a pretty intimate setting?  I haven't had the chance to see Dream Theater play a smaller venue since back in 2005 .  Do you think the show will sell out?  Thanks for the info everyone!

My girlfriend told me it holds about 1000 people, small but not THAT small, they aren't playing a club or anything.

Nabbed my tickets, and I'm PUMPED about this show!  Going to be cool to finally see DT headline again :)

ddtonfire

Just got my ticket. Expect me to be in the front of the line and then in front of petrucci.

I also got my tickets. My band has played at the Newport and it's pretty big for local bands, etc to play. National Acts on the other hand (especially with Mike's kit) will probably make the stage look a little cramped.
For the people that saw them at The LC in May of 2008, the Newport is a little over half the size of The LC in terms of capacity.

My first concert with DT was at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park.  The capacity was roughly 1200 I think.  I'm under the impression that Newport is pretty much the same.

You are right. It will be a rocking night though. The venue has excellent acoustics, etc.

I can't decide if I want to rush for the stage or chill on the balcony.

You raise a very good point.

ddtonfire

DTF should conquer the balcony. Members-exclusive  :yarr

Depends on what the balcony is like.  If you get stuck near the back, you're SOL.  Anyone ever been to this venue?  Is the balcony worth rushing for?

ddtonfire

Balcony wraps around to the stage. If you can get the sides near the stage, it's pretty nice.

Shadow2222

Where would the show sound better and look (have a better view/angle) better?

On the balcony or right up near the stage?

MetropolisxPt1

I can go if my parents go to a Grateful Dead concert the same night. If not they wont let me drive down.

Got my ticket, I'm really looking forward to my first Dream Theater concert, and I've never been to the Newport so I have no idea what to expect.  As I understand it, General Admission means if you get there early, you have a better chance of being in the front most rows right?

I'm still waiting on my tickets. I believe I will be receiving them in the mail within 10 days of the show.

crazykrug

I will be there rocking the horns, probably rock the Symphony X or TSO shirt.

I am bringing 3 buddies (two of which don't even know we are going to a concert, it is a surprise).

None of them have seen DT so I expect them to be blown away.

Hoping someone tapes it so I can give tjhem an extra gift when we get back to Iowa.

Hi All,

Just a friendly piece of advice for those that are coming in from out of town.  That night is the same night as Red, White and Boom which is arguably the largest event of the year in Columbus.  Now Red, White and Boom is held downtown and the Newport is probably 3 - 4 miles from downtown but it's close enough to be affected by the 400,000 plus people that will be making their way downtown.  The point is traffic that night is going to be a disaster..so plan accordingly.  I live in Columbus and I plan on getting down there pretty early to avoid the traffic as much as possible.  The highlight of R,W & B is the fireworks which don't start till dark (around 9:45 or so) but it's pretty much an all day affair in the city...

With that said I can't wait for the show!!! :metal

Dammit, I completely forgot Red, White, and Boom was that day. I'm now going to be leaving for the Newport several hours earlier than I wanted to.

Nathan Explosion

In that case they should choreograph the fireworks to the dance of eternity in honor of them being in town.   ::)

Shadow2222

How bad will the traffic be if I try to get out of Columbus as soon as the concert is over? Obviously I will have to deal with other concert-goers, but will there likely be a big influx of people from the Red, White, and BOOM thing be leaving?

ResultsMayVary

I plan on arriving around 4 or 5 in Columbus to at least get good parking. I don't really care for a good standing spot in the venue. You can definitely expect traffic to be hell when you are leaving after the show. The concert and Red, White, and BOOM will be ending around the same time. Plan to spend a few hours downtown.

Jesus..

Drakkhim

Never been to the Newport before. Can anyone recommend a good place to park that is nearby the venue?

Hardfive

Regarding parking there is at least one garage just south of the Newport in the "South Campus Gateway District".  There also are several parking garages on the other side of high street near the Newport that are Ohio State University garages but I believe you can park in them on Friday nights and weekends.

Also if you are from out of town and get down there early there are several restaurants in this South Campus gateway district which is just a few blocks south of the Newport on High street.

I'll probably he heading down to Eddie George's "27" grill which is one of the restaurants in the Gateway district..

They are several (at least 8 or 9) parking garages or parking lots that are around the Front St area. I saw a concert at The Basement last night and was able to park right behind Nationwide Arena. I expect these lots to be full of Red, White, and BOOM go-ers but it is within walking distance of the Newport. The distance is only a few blocks (10 at the most).
Once again to all that is going, plan to arrive very early. The earlier you arrive, the better parking and spot in line that you can get.
Also, the show is in 3 days!  :metal

The show is tomorrow. Who is all going?

I'll be there early before doors open for sure.

Nathan Explosion

So if Beatallica is an opener band do they start between 7 and 8 or are they going to eat up some of DT's time by playing after 8?

The dispatch wrote an article about them.

Drakkhim

If you see a big, tall dude with a black DT hat and a screened on, lame Bon Scott t-shirt, that would be me. :) Never seen DT as a headliner. My wife, buddy and I are so pumped up. You better play, "Lie," Mikey!

boogity

I'm going!

I just need to decide how early to get there.

Drakkhim

We're an hour and 45 mins or so away from the venue, coming from I-77N to I-70W. I'm a country bumpkin and loathe driving in the big city (Cbus is big to me anyway). Just hoping to find a parking space. :)

TTTSTA

I'm drivin in from Detroit! Hoping to get into Columbus around 4, is that early enough quagmire??? HAHA! Hoping to catch a glimpse of the band and maube get a autograph, from what i hear this is an easy place to meet the bands!??????
