I can see that. I personally really like his voice. Not as flashy as Cherone, but I find his deliveries are often better.

Not a fan of his vocal on King of the Ladies though. But the song in general is eh.

I think both are really good singers but they are best when they complement each other. Gary is the more expressive singer, but he can be a little bit annoying sometimes, especially when he's reaching and holding high notes, Nuno sometimes lacks a bit of aggression, he's too tame, too ordinary (for lack of a better word).

You'd have to import. I think it's only in print in Japan. Even here in America it's hard to find.

There are two offers on amazon, one for 60 euros (roughly 67$) and one for 120 euros (134$), that's a bit steep. But I've found that they sell the whole album as MP3 for about 9 euros  :metal :metal :metal

What I don't understand in this day and age with internet and streaming services and download shops etc. that some records are still hard to find. I get that the physical copy isn't always available everywhere but why is it sometimes to hard to buy an mp3? Doesn't the artist/record company want us to buy their stuff?

Depends on the record deal; if the artist isn't getting anything from it, why would they go out of their way to promote it, and if the label isn't getting anything from it, why waste the bandwidth when they could sell something with a higher return?

I think that Saudades has some of the best tunes that Extreme have ever written...

Agreed.  It is far and away my favorite album from them.  Just about perfect.

Most bands that come back after such a long hiatus are usually caricatures of their former selves. Sausades actually advanced the band.

More Saudades trivia: The outro of Comfortable Dumb comes from an old song Nuno did with his wife (at the time), Suze DeMarchi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLg4JTTA_38

0:36 Couldn't find a better quality version.

Comfortably Dumb was also apparently the title of a song from the unreleased second VH album with Gary. Not sure how much of that song carried over to the Extreme tune.

This discussion inspired me to put the album on for the first time since it was newer. My opinion on the album is still pretty much the same. A good album, but probably my least favorite. At least five songs I could do without and I don't think anything would crack my top ten. Comfortably Numb is a great track though and a classic Extreme tune.

Awesome. I know that Brian was always a big fan of Extreme (with that intro to the Freddie Mercury Tribute :eek ), but it's cool to hear him rave about it.

I also looooove Nuno's guitar tone in the video.

So, what's up with the thread title? I saw it, thought about it, and decided that since news refers to multiple items it's actually plural and fits into the data category a word that just sounds wrong when used properly. However, by definition it's an aggregate and therefore used in a singular form. Style manuals are pretty clear on this. Peculiarity of going from Deutsch to English? Typo? Extreme related pun that I don't know? Surprised that nobody's inquired after 7 years.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

That's from the live package they released a year or so ago. I love Extreme. Great band. Nuno is incredible, and Gary Cherone was THE replacement singer for Van Halen -- they just gave him a shitty record to sing on.

Extreme have this Queen meets Van Halen vibe that is just undeniable greatness for me. Pornograffiti and III Sides are classics. Their last studio album wasn't spectacular, however. I'm hoping for a return to form the next time they crank something out.

Love Extreme, it's a huge shame that their reunion didn't really amount to anything.

I've been having such a great time with the Maiden thread that I'm already thinking about doing another one, Extreme is at the top of my list of possible bands.

I will make the controversial statement and say, the problem with Sausades wasn't the album, it was the fans. Sausades is a quintessential Extreme album. It's sometimes playfully sexist (King of the Ladies), it irreverently plugs unexpected music styles (Take us alive), it has Nuno-esque songs (Flower Man), and beautiful ballads (Interface).

That's what Extreme is about IMO, and Sausades delivers top quality with all of those. The problem is rather, people want a Pornograffiti 2.0.

That's not what I wanted. I just thought it sounded more like a Dramagods album than an Extreme album and it had a lot of filler (especially toward the end). It does have its moments though, Comfortably Dumb, Take Us Alive, and Ghost are some highlights. Interface is great too but I prefer the original Dramagods version.

What pissed me off the most, was that it didn't even sound like Gary at all.   It sounded like someone trying desperately to sound like Sammy.   I really think that if Gary would have done his thing been allowed to do his thing, Van Halen may have been able to pull the hat trick of finding success with 3 different singers.   Alas, I suspect that EVH's ego finally took full control.  He was tired of butting heads with two powerhouse egos, and wanted someone he could control.

For me I didn't want Pornograffitti 2.0, I want them to carry on releasing good music. Saudades was good but had some filler imo, but that was 9 years ago, and the talk of a new record is already two years old, not exactly building a momentum here. No wonder people lose interest.

I disagree Rumbo. I am obviously a fan, and I absolutely didn't want Porno 2. There's just something missing from Sausades (Sow Dodge De Rock,I think is how we pronounce it, right?). I like Comfortably Dumb, and another couple tracks, but it's...just not as enveloping as their other records were. I can't put my finger on it.

Frankly, I think the band was apart for so long, what I hear is songs that would be solo songs to a degree trying to be made into Extreme songs. In fact, I think Interface was a Nuno song on Population 1? I forget. I don't think they really gelled as well in the creative aspect as they did before the split.

I expect the next record, whenever it arrives, to rectify that. They seem more united than ever now.

Love Extreme, it's a huge shame that their reunion didn't really amount to anything.

I've been having such a great time with the Maiden thread that I'm already thinking about doing another one, Extreme is at the top of my list of possible bands.

I would definitely be interested.  Extreme are a band that was very hit and miss for me.  Up until Saudades, they have always had songs on any given album that I liked, some I actively disliked, and some I just couldn't be fussed with.  But I also have never really delved into their history and the background and details of each of their albums.  I would love a good discography thread that does that.  It could lead me to learn to have a greater appreciation for some of those songs that never clicked with me.  And even if it doesn't, I know it will lead to a greater appreciation of the band as a whole.

Well, I can't really speak to what the fanbase as a whole wanted.  I'm just not nearly in tune with the Extreme fan base.  But I think in terms of the non-hardcore Extreme fan base that is the '80s/early '90s rock fanbase as a whole, just like more casual fans of ANY band of that era, of course they want/expect pt. 2 of the band's most popular album or else aren't interested.

But the more important point is, to me, you absolutely NAILED how I felt about Saudades.  On any other given Extreme album, as I mentioned above, I can probably point to maybe a handful of songs I like.  I can't say I "like" any other album more than a little bit.  Saudades is a clear exception.  I LOVE that album, and you hit on the reasons why in your post.  It came at a time when I wasn't expecting anything from this band, and they completely blew me away.  And it didn't hurt that their performance on that tour was spectacular, or that they captured it for a live release.1

This album fired on all cylinders for me, and it's hard to come up with many songs I don't care for.  I know I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I don't care.2

1.  What is also cool is that King's X put out a live release from that same tour where they opened for Extreme, so watching both back to back is like reliving that show in its entirety.

2.  Who am I kidding?  When do I EVER?  :lol

WUT?  ???

A good "club band?" Dudes laid waste to Donnington and they were nothing more than a club band to you?

Yeah, we gotta disagree on that one my man. The only weak spot was Paul Geary on drums (he was OK). The other three were dynamite.

I hope they rediscover their "Queen" side with the next album, a la III Sides. There wasn't really much in that regard on Sausades.

Actually I've watched the Donnington footage on youtube. It's awesome!

But I guess my point is that they are a great live band...is that better?  ;D

I have tried many times to give Extreme's studio music a chance. I just can't get through it.

Let me also say that I think they are amazingly talented no question. And though I really don't connect with Cherone (sp), he's obviously an excellent singer.

I feel like they got an upgrade with Mangini and Kevin Figueiredo.  I can't really speak to Figuerido's chops overall.  But his work on Saudades was great, and when I saw them live on that tour, I thought he more than did the other tunes justice and had a nice groove.

I've seen them twice:   III Sides tour and the Pornograffitti 25 tour.  On the latter, they came out VERY late (and were pissed about something), the fans were booing because they were late and they just stepped up and KILLED it.  Sound was tough for the first song or two (couldn't hear Gary) but they rose above, and it was a great show.

I don't know if I agree with the Paul Geary comment; I like the studio stuff with Paul better than the stuff that came after, and that is telling to me.   But Kevin delivered live, that is for certain.

They are FAR more than a "club band".   The first show was a theater (same place I saw Crimson on the Thrak tour and ELP on the Black Moon tour) and the second was Mohegan Sun's arena, albeit in the theater set up (the stage was about halfway across the floor so that there were about 2/3 of the seats open).   I was very impressed with how they delivered vocally live both times (Badger and Nuno are both excellent singers in the Michael Anthony mode).
