Are there any Extreme news lately?
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:37:06 PM »
Has anybody heard anything? I thought Sausades was a really good effort, but I would think they have to put out the next album soon, to keep the momentum going.

Saudades was pretty poor in my opinion. I don't really think I'd care if they decided to just let it go. They're not going to be able to recapture the energy their old stuff had. I haven't heard any news though.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

They did some dates last summer, but otherwise, I've heard nothing.

Damn shame.  As much as I love music from bands like DT and Rush, you'll be hard pressed to find a better 21:39 of music than Everything Under the Sun.
Hope is what remains to be seen. Now we must tend our garden.

I just read on some other site (I think Eddie Trunk's) that they're coming out with a live DVD/CD set. And Nuno's been on tour with Rihanna.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but I REALLY hope it's from the Saudades tour and not "classic era."

...but they look so funny circa 1990 :D

Yeh I heard about Nuno and Rihanna, so I doubt Extreme will be doing much until that's over. Any Live DVD will go down well in my house though.

This.

The live DVD/CD is for sure. I also know Nuno mentioned before he starting touring with Rihanna, that he and Gary were working on songs for a new record as well.

Bosk1, I just read this on melodicrock.com.  The live cd is from 2009.

Frontiers Records is preparing new releases for the USA such as Extreme Take Us Alive CD & DVD recorded in Boston last year.

So it is from the new album and tour.  That's good news.

Just got the itch to listen to Saudades again.  What a great album.  I can't seem to find anything official, but rumor has it, the band is actually in studio working on their follow-up for release later this year.  I hope that ends up being true, and I hope it ends up being as good as their last effort.  This is perhaps blasphemy to most Extreme fans, but I consider Saudades to be their best album from start to finish.

I'd put III Sides before it but it was a very good album.

Here's a new article from Gary Cherone where he talks about his side project Hurtsmile, Mangini/DT and an update on Extreme:

https://limelightmagazine.com/2011/09/13/garycherone/

In 2012, Gary plans on picking up with the members of Extreme, including Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger, and drummer Kevin Figueiredo. The band last performed in 2009 at the House of Blues in Boston.
"Right now, Nuno and I are writing material separately but we’ll get together when he finishes up with Rihanna and we’ll write for the next record,” he said. “We’re hoping to get music out before we tour but you’ll probably see us before you hear new material."  :metal

From Melodicrock.com frontpage from yesterday.

https://www.melodicrock.com/

NUNO LINES UP EXTREME FOR MORE DATES AND NEW ALBUM:
News as posted online from guitarist Nuno Bettencourt: "Hi Everyone… I know it's been a while since we have given any updates… I have been touring non-stop for the last few years and finally have some time off! But I wanted to fill you in on everything Extreme. We had a great time performing Pornograffitti in Japan. The shows were very special. It felt good to play some of the deep cuts. We also had a chance to play some new markets this summer such as Russia and China. We didn't know what to expect but the fans were incredible! Don't worry Brazil… we did not forget about you…. we are still planning on coming there soon and are just working out the details with the promoter. Lastly, I have been working on a lot of new material for Extreme and we are looking at our schedules now, so hopefully we can start working on the new Extreme record before the end of the year. We will fill you in as things progress. Until than…"

I realize this is an EXTREMELY (ha!) unconventional view, but I just have to say it anyway:  Saudades is far and away the best thing this band has ever done.  Ever.  So good from start to finish.

Hmm. Can't agree with you there, though it is better than the debut and WFTP.

All their other albums, including III Sides, are hit and miss for me.  They all have a couple of standout tracks, some that are good if I'm in the right mood, and some that I just don't care for.  But Saudades is comletely different in that I really like the vast majority of songs on that album.

The debut is fucking awesome. Each of their albums has a few clunkers though, Saudades included.

Also, I heard More Than Words in a grocery store yesterday. It was an interesting choice.

UMH.  I was a funny time because all the girls were buying the album at the time thinking that most of the album was like "More Than Words".  The shock for them when they heard the rest of the album.

Bosk1.  I will listen to Saudades tomorrow while doing my production paperwork.

Saw these guys at M3 2011.  Not too bad and Gary sounded great.  It felt/sounded like leftovers from Waiting for the Punchline, if I remember right.  Still, not too bad.

Yeah, it's a shame about Pornograffitti and More than Words/Hole Hearted.  There is so much badassery on the entire rest of that album.  It's like an ass-kicking for the ears.

More Than Words had an interesting vibe at the show I saw on the Saudades tour.  Basically, the audience sang the whole thing, with Gary just directing it.  I can't remember exactly how he and Nuno introduced it, but the message was along the lines of:  "We don't hate this song, but it's not exactly our favorite either.  But we realize this was our biggest hit by far, and that a lot of you really dig it, and we can appreciate that, so we're going to do it for you.  But the catch is, since we're pretty much doing it FOR YOU, you guys are going to sing it."  It didn't rise to the level of "hating" on the song, but the message was clear that while the band didn't dislike it, they fully realized that it was their albatross, and that while they didn't want to be pigeonholed into being "that band who plays More Than Words," they were smart enough not to openly rebel against that by cutting it from their sets.  It was a cool/fun moment.  They toned that vibe down a bit for the DVD, but it's still subtly there.

Even more interestingly, I remember a few years after the song was big, a buddy of mine played me a remix that had harmony vocals almost ALL the way through the song, and had bongos throughout, very light and not at all inappropriate sounding to the song.  It was really nice, but I cannot seem to find a copy of it anywhere.

I hate opening this can of worms but I always thought it was a spoiled attitude for bands to feel like they're "doing fans a favor" by playing something that ain't one of their more enjoyable songs. It's maybe 4-6 minutes, tops, for any song in any band's discography barring the odd epic here and there and barring the odd genre like prog rock/metal.

If anything, the fans are doing the band a favor by supporting their ability to do what they like for a living, something at least 90% of society doesn't get to experience.

I get where you're coming from, but that wasn't how I took their attitude at all.  And I get where they're coming from in having a "must play" song that really does not reflect at all what they are about as a band.  It's not like they didn't want to play it because they're tired of it--it's just that it doesn't really reflect who they are.  It was a branching out, and was meant to be sort of an anomaly, showing that they are into really different diverse styles.  But that anomaly is what took off and ended up defining their image more than the songs that better reflect what they are about, so I can see a bit of reluctance.
