Apart from having the word "Fucking", the sentence isn't even similar.

Anyone else think that this phone wasn't just "left" somewhere by accident?

Yeah, totally not on accident. Gizmodo are scum too, paying for stolen goods.

Huh? "Just so you know, we didn't know this was stolen [as they might have claimed. meaning, real and truly from Apple. It was found, and to be of unproven origin] when we bought it."

Sure the guy seemed kind of like a jerk, but not sure he's "scum."

Oh yeah, someone offering you the phone for sale. It's not stolen or anything. Right.

That's one thing, but how about posting the person's personal info?

This. Why would they pay (Edit: they paid $5000!) for something they didn't think could be a real thing? And what they're doing now to the guy who lost it... grmf.
A lot of people are doing the "I'm never coming back" thing with gizmodo now, including my husband. Just removed them from his RSS reader completely. Me, I'm gonna see how this all ends up! How low can Jesus stoop? Heh.
No, really, I'm just enjoying watching epic geek internet drama unfold in front of my eyes without me being any part of it at all.

Sneak Edit: Yeah, Pyroph said more eloquently than me what I feel.

It's funny that people still use gizmodo anyway. Engadget has been better for months, not that I use either. But I just remember reading gizmodo and cringing at the immature and badly written articles. And it's not like geekologie where it's done in a sarcastic fashion, and makes you laugh.

I've always been more of an engadget reader, but they have one writer who just pisses me off. His name is Joshua Topolsky or something like that. Either way, he's a bitch.

geekologie, you say? I'm intrigued... I have them both in my RSS reader, I read what catches my eye but I'm considering dumping giz. They write about the same stuff anyway, just engagdet does it more seriously and I'd much rather read serious than "we're trying to be funny but we're mostly immature"

*goes to search for geekologie*

He's the editor in chief, and Husband ceremoniously never reads anything he writes :P I often don't notice who's writing, but I'm looking at his specific articles now and I can't remember opening even one of them from my RSS reader. Maybe I subconsciously hate him.

Lookie what Joel Johnson says in his article about why Apple Didn't Leak this phone:

"While the outing of Apple engineer Gray Powell was inevitable—his name was going to come out anyway, and there is a real if slight chance that foisting him into the public eye might help him keep his job at Apple—I think the way we did it was incredibly tacky. I've said my piece to my co-workers, but I bring it up here because it's important for another reason."

Ok, so at least someone in there sees that! (article here: https://gizmodo.com/5520746/apple-didnt-leak-the-iphoneand-why-that-matters I just skimmed until my eyes fell upon that I quoted there)

Geekologie is a lot less tech-news focused, and just general awesome stuff. but most of it is so brilliant that it's worth RSSing anyway :D

(Though recently there has been an increasing focus on non-tech stuff, it's not as good. But the archives are great anyway)

edit: case in point of geekologie awesomeness - recent story talked about these:

https://gizmodo.com/5524843/police-seize-jason-chens-computers

Breakdown:

Quote from: Jazz Samurai
- In California (and most places), "finders keepers" doesn't work ... taking something that someone left behind is theft
- This means that Gizmodo purchased stolen property
- Gizmodo paid the "finder" equal to or above $5000, making it a FELONY
- Apple seized all of Gizmodo writer Jason Chen's computer equipment, most likely looking for information on the "finder"
- Gizmodo and "finder" are both royally fucked for committing felonies, plus the damages Apple could claim for having competitive information made publicly available
- Gizmodo is claiming that Apple's search warrant isn't valid (they are wrong)
- lol

I seem to remember that they tried to return the phone to apple multiple times. How does that not count for something?

Well that's obvious.

edit: And what's with bashing the door open? It's a stolen iphone, not a drug bust. Does the police department not have anyone who knows how to pick a lock?

No, they didn't. Police did. Apple can file a civil suit, but they can't investigate criminal charges, heh.

"Under both state and federal law, a search warrant may not be validly issued to confiscate the property of a journalist," she wrote in a letter to San Mateo County authorities on Saturday.

"It is abundantly clear under the law that a search warrant to remove these items was invalid. The appropriate method of obtaining such materials would be the issuance of a subpoena," said Ms. Darbyshire.

Gawker Media said the issue now throws into question whether or not bloggers are considered journalists under the law.

Advocacy group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which is following the case, said it found the latest events worrying for two reasons.

"You have a reporter who is disseminating newsworthy information to the public that are supposed to be protected from search and seizures. These protections apply to people who collect information in order to report it to the public regardless of what name you slap on them; blogger, journalist or whatever," Jennifer Ganick, the EFFs civil liberties director told BBC News.

The second issue the EFF is concerned about is if police officers are doing the investigative work of a private company.

"If there was some offence here it is not apparent what it is", she said.
