What an outstanding show last night! The Smithereens were performing at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia and Mrs. Cozmo got me tickets for our anniversary. The opener was John Lilley, formerly of the Hooters. He did maybe 6 songs or so, a mix of rock/countryish kinda tunes. I wasn't bored to tears, but it definitely wasn't my thing. So the lady from WXPN's morning show (World Cafe Live is in the same building with XPN) comes out to announce that to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album "11", they were going to perform the ENTIRE album. Awesome. I got almost all of the setlist. There was one song I didn't recognize, but everything else I got:
A Girl Like You
Blues Before and After
Blue Period
Baby Be Good
Room without a View
Yesterday Girl
Cut Flowers
William Wilson
Maria Elena
Kiss Your Tears Away (end of "11" album)
--------------------
Behind the Wall of Sleep
Drown in My Own Tears
Only a Memory
House We Used to Live In
--------------------
A few selections from their cover album of the Who's "Tommy":
Sparks
Acid Queen
I'm Free
--------------------
She's Got a Way
Especially For You
-Insert unfamiliar song here-
Something New
Since You Went Away
Top of the Pops
Miles From Nowhere
Blood and Roses
Time and Time Again
--------------------
Encore:
Behind Blue Eyes
Batman Theme
During Blood and Roses' outro jam, Jim Babjak and "The Thrilla" came out into the crowd and walked around. It was funny seeing people in the crowd holding their instrument cables up for them, so they wouldn't get tangled up. The band sounded absolutely phenomenal. It was SUCH a good time. This was my First Smithereens show and at the meet & greet afterwards, I mentioned it to Jim and Pat that it was my first Smithereens show and that nothing could have made it any better. Jim's like "Really? Where the fuck have you been for 30 years??" jokingly. They were
really nice guys and very appreciative of everyone being there.
In my looking around this morning, I found that someone in the crowd last night already posted a video to YouTube of Behind the Wall of Sleep (my favorite Smithereens song). We were MAYBE 10 feet behind this person:
