The Mars Volta - Octahedron (2009)
« on: May 16, 2009, 06:33:49 PM »
there was a topic on this before the board was shutdown. Anyway, 3 more songs besides the 1st single "Cotopaxi" have surfaced from this upcoming album.

Here's the original press release:

01 Since We've Been Wrong
02 Teflon
03 Halo of Nembutals
04 With Twilight as My Guide
05 Cotopaxi
06 Desperate Graves
07 Copernicus
08 Luciforms

https://pitchfork.com/news/35073-the-mars-volta-enter-the-ioctahedroni/

myspace bulletin:

THE MARS VOLTA: OCTAHEDRON
Out June 23 on Warner Bros. Records (NORTH AMERICA) and June 22nd on Mercury Records (REST OF WORLD)

The Mars Volta's fifth studio album, Octahedron, will be released June 23 by Warner Bros. Records in North America and on June 22nd on Mercury Records in the rest of the world.

The first single in North America will be "Since We've Been Wrong" while overseas it will be Cotopaxi.

Octahedron was written by The Mars Volta--Omar Rodriguez Lopez (music, arrangements, direction) and Cedric Bixler Zavala (vocals, lyrics)--and performed by The Mars Volta group: Marcel Rodriguez Lopez, Thomas Pridgen, John Frusciante, Isaiah Ikey Owens, Juan Alderete de la Pena, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez Lopez.

Desparate Graves sounds good, but of course, they have not subtracted those tambourine-tinged clipping cymbals. Fuck. They're a bit like Dream Theater in this way. This band continues to tease me, and then they fail to abandon one of my only problems with them (and their most recent music).

I may just end up liking the acoustic songs on this album, and still not be able to get over those fingernails-on-a-chalkboard clipping high-pitched cymbals that ruin otherwise really good music.

I'll give this a good chance. I like most of what TMV bring out. Especially their last CD.

Don't know if we can talk about it, so I'll just say I think it's their second best album, behind Deloused.

I told myself to only listen to one song, cause I hate listening to music on my laptop speakers, but I was impressed enough to say I like the album already.

I listened to the opening song, and wow, this is something I've always wanted to hear from TMV. Some soft and melodic approach works out wonderful with Cerdric's voice!

i like how they release an album so quickly. They already have 5 albums and it feels so recent when De Loused came out

Not if you consider their discography to be a painful spiral downwards. In that case, they couldn't get themselves over with soon enough.

Hate to be the killjoy, but I'm adding this to my growing list of TMV disappointments.

yeah i mean maybe they need a little break or something although i think from what i heard from OCtahedron i like it.  But at least they are not like TOOL releasing an album every 4 years

Or Peter Gabriel who finds it hard to release more than an official studio album a decade even if he does do stuff like Big Blue Ball.

Well, time to listen to this.  If I don't like it I think I'm done with TMV.

Hope I'm not nuts in saying this but I like the acoustic songs on the album way more than the rockish songs.

Love this album so far. It's difficult to say where this album will go in their discography. Considering I like all of their albums, it'll be difficult to place.

You're not.  I like 'em better too.  I now have the entire Mars Volta discography which is weird considering I don't consider them to be one of my favorites, but I do enjoy De-Loused and, on occasion, Bedlam and Frances.  I have to be in a very specific mood to really enjoy these guys, I'm just not sure what that is.

I'm a huge fan of all their stuff. But like someone said before, the softer songs tend to grow on me and now they're some of my favorites; i think these will be some of my favorite songs down the road. I already really like it.
I can't imagine how amazing an experience [SCORE] must of been to see.

Televators is probably my favorite song by them... its a soft song and i get the chills all the time.  Im diggin this album so far even the heavier ones because they stand out more now there arent that many.  This is prob my fav album after De Loused

This is probably TMV's most accessible album yet.  No weird noisy passages like on Frances or De-Loused and no mass suckage like on Amputechture and not as much "meh"-ness like on BiG.  It's also my fav after De-Loused.

Yeah, after listening a few more times I realize how unconnected to the songs I feel. They'll take time to get used to, but they are good.

I prefer the two you mentioned over Goliath.  I also think Amputechture is underrated though so.

I just listened to this all the way through, for the first time.

I like it, there are good songs, there are not so good songs, but that's cool. Most of the songs will grow, but I hope this will become more of an album as I listen to it, instead of how it feels like now: a collection of random tracks.
