Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
« on: January 19, 2010, 04:52:49 AM »
Anyone familiar with this piece of music?  What do DT fans think of this?

This is simply a 1 hour long song.  I gotta say, I picked this up not knowing anything about the band or musicians but simply for the novelty of a 60min song.  This is one of the greatest pieces of goth/prog/doom metal ever.

This is a piece of art.  One would think one song spanning 60 minutes would fail, but they would be wrong.  This is in fact 1 song, it's not a Six Degrees or Pleasant Shade of Grey gimmick with 7 or 8 different songs stuck together to make 1 long track.  The whole thing to me is incredible, a beautiful piece of work, one of a kind.  It's amazing how it never gets boring.  The first half an hour flies by, with amazing riff's, recurring themes, great melodies and fantastic instrumental sections.

The female vocal/sax duo at about 32:00 is incredible.  It gives me chills and the mood really scares the living crap out of me, it's that haunting.  An emotive, touching section.  The builup to the incredible guitar solo is immense.  A 2 minute solo at the 42:00 mark is filled with such feeling, some odd note selections strangely seems perfectly in place.  The return to the theme at the 55:00 or so minute mark rounds this amazing piece of music off perfectly.

I recommend every music lover to at least give this a go, you might be surprised.

Yeah, I really like it. While most people hate the section, I love the saxophone/female singing part about halfway in.

I thought the first fifteen minutes were pretty meh, so I didn't bother listening to the rest.

You are aware that SDOIT is one song, right? It was composed as a single song, but they decided to split it up on the album into tracks.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

It's a great song and a great album! It's kind of weird listening to it on LP, having to change sides AND LPs in "the middle" of a song is strange. (We do have it on cd as well).

Odd, I just had this song come up on my itunes random playlist of awesome today. I love this song, because unlike every other super super long song I know of, it doesn't change drastically into movements. It's got its own sound. The bit from 33:00 to 37:00 with the female wailing can jump off a cliff, but the rest of the song is incredible.

Awesome song! I really like the intro with the noise and stuff, and then the song never seems to drag.

Well, I do understand that it stated that it is one song, but really, the sections are too different for it to in fact be one long song IMO.  The band also play certain sections live proving that each section can be it's own tune. Same goes with Fates Warning's Shade of Grey.  The different sections have different flavours, tones and colours, IMO never giving the feeling that I'm listening to one long track.  Maybe you should sit through the entire hour of Green Carnation and you might see what I mean.  There are too many recurring themes and melodies for it to be split up.

Yeah, I'm learning to love it myself.  The atmosphere and tension it builds is immense.  I can easily see why it would get disliked, but for me, it's quite a pleasure to listen to, especially the way it builds after that into the guitar solo.

Brilliant album/song.

Such a shame they split. GoC were one of my favourite bands.
Currently listening to:

Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned **
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées ***1/2

I'm not saying anything about how it sounds, just making sure you knew that it was written and composed as a single song. Any splitting that happened came along in post production.

Without the female vox it's still 55:06 and it doesn't sound like something should be there. He stops singing and it gets quiet for a tad and the acoustic guitar chord stikes.

Yeah, I thought it would work quite nicely like that, considering the segues between these sections.  Still bloody long, but come to think of it, nothing else really deserves to be edited out.
