Led Zeppelin appreciation thread

Yes, they are so overplayed that I can only go through a few stages a year where I listen to them a lot, but every time I do, I am reminded of how great their music was.  Great band, one of the best ever, and worthy of most of the accolades that they get.

Great band, and certainly one of my favorite hard rock bands ever. Stairway to heaven is their best work, despite being overplayed. My favorite albums: Houses of the holy, IV, and In through the out door.

Quite an overrated band based on the music, but they did have several great songs. It's just a shame that for every great song they had, they'd have twice as many that I find completely uninteresting. But they were undeniably hugely influential to rock, and to many of my favourite bands, so I gotta give them cred for that. As a huge Whitesnake fan, it would make no sense for me not to like Zeppelin to some degree, right? :lol

I went through a bit of a Zeppelin kick a month ago.  My favorite song would have to be "The Ocean."  Great, great stuff.

I think the only reason Zeppelin is seen as overrated is because of the intense radio airplay given to 20% of their songs.  I can't stand hearing them on the radio either.  But instead, go to their albums.  Zeppelin has NO bad albums, and I would even go so far as to argue they have NOT ONE bad song.  They're the only band I describe in that manner.

They were able to take their musical roots and craft them into a completely new and unique sound that no one has really been able to copy ever since.  Admirable!!

Favorite albums:  II, IV, Houses, Physical Graffiti.

Led Zeppelin is easily in my top 3 bands, maybe even #1.

I agree with sirbrad about Zep being overexposed.  They made such a huge splash that they became TOO big, if that's at all possible.  They suffered a backlash of sorts as all the haters/critics came out and bashed them for what they became (rock gods), rather than for the actual music they made.

The progression that Zeppelin made over the course of their 8 studio albums is pretty amazing.  LZ I is worlds apart from what we ultimately get on Houses of The Holy and Physical Graffiti.   I honestly believe that this alone separates them from the other hard-rock greats of the time, i.e. Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.  All these bands took what Cream and Hendrix did with the blues to an absolute extreme in heaviness, but it was Zeppelin that proceeded to experiment with acoustic folk, middle-eastern modes, funk, reggae, salsa, etc.   And all throughout, the band is able to maintain the vaunted 'light and shade' in between all the heaviness.  Of course, the lynchpin to the extreme heaviness is that incredible rhythm section of Bonham/Jones.  Fans have labeled certain metal genres as 'extreme', but nobody tops Zep for being able to master a true balance of extremes.

NOT ONE bad song.

THAT is a stretch.  As a bearer of the four symbols tatooed on his shoulder, even I wouldn't go that far - see Hats off to (Roy) Harper.  Otherwise, great post.  Same to Ludwig

Blob ... you're starting to take the baton from Nick on your constant failures  ;).  Huge Whitesnake fan, but Led Zeppelin is over-rated and uninteresting?   ???

Without a doubt my favorite band.  They were incredibly diverse and experimental for their time ... in the rock genre of the late 60s and 70s.  Every album brought something new and interesting to their repetoire, that cannot be denied.

Under-rated/appreciated songs - Carouselambra, Battle of Evermore, Wearing and Tearing, That's the Way.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Zeppelin.  I genuinely despise probably 50% of their music.  Most of what remains I'm rather indifferent to.  Then there's about 10% that is some of the greatest music ever played.  I'd blame radio for a lot of it, but a lot of their music really was crap; even the songs you never hear.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

I love that song, it's so fun and catchy, nothing bad about it. So what if it isn't hard rock? Neither are The Crunge and Dyer maker, but people appreciate it anyway. I'm quite open-minded when it comes to bands, and ITTOD turned out to be my 3rd favorite Zeppelin album, just because it's fun, original, and has some great hooks.

Just because a song is not great does not make it bad.  If I claimed that all of their songs were excellent, THAT would be a stretch.

Dude, it's not even my least favorite.  That honor would undoubtedly go to one of the tracks from "Coda," which I don't consider as a part of their recorded canon.

THE band that started my entire music appreciation.  It was a time when I didn't really know what music I was into, and they showed me the light.  As is with every Huge Fan Of Zepp, once I started listening to a decent amount of their work, it was a good year or so that all I ever listened to was Led Zeppelin.  So many amazing songs and albums, and they will forever be my utmost favorite band.

Favorite Songs:  Black Dog, The Ocean, Stairway To Heaven, Kashmir, Dazed and Confused, Whole Lotta Love (I have to stop or I'll list like 20 more songs)

Underrated Songs:  Bring It On Home, Tangerine, The Rover, Out On The Tiles, Ramble On

Least Favorite: Hot Dog  Carouselambra, Boogie With Stu   <---- these tracks aren't necessarily bad, they just aren't what I love about Led Zeppelin is all.

God damn it's been a while since I've gone through the Zeppelin Library.  They were Gods among men.

I had no idea it was underrated.  The old awesome Classic Rock station played it quite a lot.  I remember being 12 and thinking it was awesome some band put LotR references in their songs.

Their great songs were great, no doubt, I just find they have a larger portion of songs that aren't all that good. I love most of their well known songs, but not every song was a Black Dog or Immigrant Song ;)

Okay but the most I'll give you is "slightly" overrated, but nonetheless still overrated. But don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorites. It's just being given too much credit. The best comparison I think I can make is The Trooper by Iron Maiden.

Led Zeppelin II is my favourite album ever. I'll never get enough Zeppelin. I mostly appreciate them so much because of how their albums sound. So many weird and crazy techniques were used just recording John Bonham's drums alone. Completely influenced and changed rock forever.
