This past summer at the beach, I used a low-light setting to try to capture the reflection of the moon over the ocean.  I steadied it (as best I could) on the railing of the porch where we were staying, but on a low-light setting, you know how hard it is to get a solidly crystal clear pic.  Alas, the moon and clouds are a hair blurry.

What I hadn't figured on was the people walking up and down the boardwalk, creating a ridiculously cool moving time-lapse effect in the middle of an almost completely static background and foreground.

Very nice! do you by chance remember how long the exposure was? that looks to be why the clouds and moon are a bit out of focus, the shutter was open so long that nature kept on movin.

The properties of the file indicate a shutter speed of 8 seconds.  It's a Kodak Easyshare Z1012 digital camera, set on the "night landscape" setting.  I figured it was probably the natural movement of the clouds and such, because the wall down front and the sand and stuff are all pretty clear.

EDIT:  I also JUST noticed the guy in the middle in the white shirt.  He's looking both ways in the pic.  :lol

I know.  Problem is your average person takes pictures as a way of remembering the past, not for artistic effect.  As such, people like to have a reminder of when the picture was taken.  I know it takes away form the picture, but for me, what was intended to be a cool memory of a week at the beach turned out to be a much cooler pic than I'd anticipated.  If I had a licensed version of the new Photoshop, I'd be removing date stamps from these kinds of pictures.

Yeah I know, I just assume that any pic posted here was taken for artistic reasons, as that is what the thread is for.  So I totally get why you have a timestamp on.  Also, you can download a 30 day free trial of photoshop :)

:sadpanda:  I already did.  It expired months ago.  I used it on several pics I took in Bermuda.  I happened to stumble across this one last night looking for something else.

Here's a recent shot of mine. I find photos like this a little plain and unimaginative - macro shots of flowers are so mainstream! :neverusethis: No, but anyway, because of that I tried a different approach, with the flower out of focus, and instead focusing on the stem and its water drops. I think it turned out nice. It's still not the most creative shot ever, but I'm happy with it.

Editing: Contrast.

Not all shots have to be creative - it's just as important for a photo to look good IMO, and nicely done macro shots of flowers look good.

Yes, of course. There's nothing wrong with them. They're fun to take and, as you say, they look good. But I've been an amateur photographer for years now and I've reached the stage where I think "LOOK AT THE PRETTY FLOWERS I HAVE TO SHOOT THEM... ah, no, wait, how boring." :lol

But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good macro shot of a flower.

Yeah if you were ONLY taking those, obviously that'd be pretty dull. I'm just saying take other stuff but don't stop taking the classics. :D

EDIT: I took a pretty cool photo this weekend, but it's on my other computer and I can't be bothered to turn it on. I'll post it tomorrow. :lol

Yeah, that's the thing - when you first start out, all you do is macro shots. They're easy, it's hard to fail, anything looks pretty good in macro. Especially flowers. :lol But after a while you (realize time flies) start longing for tougher challenges, and suddenly macro shots is the most boring thing ever. It comes back to you though (as shown by my photograph) when you learn that macro can be just as challenging. I'm still not a great fan of it, but that's mostly because I wish I was better at it. (I might be comparing with the wrong people though... ::))

Not sure if anyone mentioned, but speaking of timestamp.. The time and date are all recorded in the exif data of the picture itself, so just turn it off so it doesnt show on the pictures, you can still see it later.
anyways..
Here's a pic I snapped today because it was so beautiful outside.

This thread always annoys me.  It's a constant reminder of how uncreative I am with composition.  I can take dandy pictures of specific objects, but the idea of taking pictures of random shit never occurs to me.  I think I could recreate most of the pictures I'm seeing here, except for the IR stuff, but I would never think to take a picture of a random McDonald's lid.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Jonny, that first one is great!

Anyway I've been editing some old photos, all taken on my old compact camera but I still rather like some of them. I've updated all of the old stuff on my deviantART page (https://ariich.deviantart.com/gallery/) but I figure I'll post a few of my personal favourites:

Remembrance:

Steering with Class:

Looking Down on Clouds:

Wind Rain Fog:

Atlas at Dawn:

Marrakech Sunset:

Rust:

Handcake:

Next task is to sort out more recent photos that I want to upload. Expect another update at some point, probably this weekend!

The last four pictures are my favorites.  Maybe if you did a bit of  editing to create a bit more contrast in the bulldozer one it could be improved.  There's just a lot of white beneath the claw/shovel part.

That's dust from it tearing that building apart, it already had quite a bit of contrast work done to it, but thanks!
