If the lighting and exposure are right, you really don't need to do much editing. I only made some very minor touch ups on Lr4.3

How crucial would you say it is to use an off camera flash or have extra lights on hand for photographing people? I'm still waiting on my friend to model for me, but these are some things I've been wary about.

I think if you're just starting out to do portraits you don't need it, but if you can afford all the equipment its a good tool! I like to use a camera flash sometimes though just to get a little bit of shimmer in the eyes :)

I prefer natural lights, but the problem with it is is that; you are likely going to get a ton of unwanted shadows on the model's face.

Either you use a reflector to try and balance out the light on the model's face, and/or you use a flash light as a fill light to do the same thing. Of course, if you have a remote trigger (those cheap basic ones ain't really that expensive), it is best to place the light off camera just out of the frame. Once you get that done, the trick is to either power down the flash, and/or mess with your aperture to get the "right" look you go for.  :hat

Here we go, my first major effort to make a cool landscapeish shot, could be a lot better, but at the time of taking this picture I didn't plan on making it what turned into, so it turned into something pretty neat for something unplanned!

^ did you take this shot through a piece of glass or window? I see reflections on both sides... don't get me wrong, that is perfectly fine, if that's your intention. Yet, perhaps due to it being shot through a glass, the focus appears a bit soft to me. Also, IMHO, this is really an exterior shot than a landscape.  :hat

I'm having the stupidest fucking time with the image touch up software that came with my camera. It's always been a little sluggish every now and then, but today it's flat out refusing me the ability to to convert an image I really like from NEF/RAW to JPEG. So basically, it's rendering the image useless. I took a screenshot of the image instead, but of course there's a quality loss and doesn't allow me to keep it the resolution I want it to be.

Anyway, here it is:

And just a few others I took the other day:

Nothing is WRONG, but there are a few things I want to point out to you. The foreground buildings look like they are moving from left to right at a bit of an angle, either from lens distortion of just from the place you took the image. Also some of the lights look really over exposed, but that's not a major issue at all. Just some framing could be messed with, I think.

No, it's a photo that looks intentionally wrong :D

It's a 10s exposure of a very late sunset shot (about 30 minutes after sunset + clouds). It was quite dark, and I wanted to see the world through an eye much more sensible than mine. Turns out that the night is a very eerie time, when lit up. :)

As for all the rest, I just placed the camera on a ledge and took the photo, without caring for anything. I didn't even look before taking it, I just focused on keeping the camera extremely still during the exposure.

Fair enough, can't really fault you on that with context.

@Azyiu - it's the software that came with my Nikon D3100, viewNX 2. I mostly use it for basic touching up and basic color correction. The install disc is back on campus, which I'm away from for a week. It's just really frustrating is all, but I found a sort of work around. Gonna reinstall it next week after spring break.

Nice man! It's an awesome feeling! I had a few photos published in a few papers in town over Christmas! I was shooting hockey for a local junior team when they went to an international tournament. It's really cool to get some public recognition!

and PS to explain the mill: My city is a forestry town, so a lot of these pulp mills are around my city, and after driving by this spot previously I thought this would be a cool spot to take pictures tonight.  :tup

I can't exactly tell which model is that from the picture. Does it have IS or without? Is it the gen II or first generation model? I am pretty certain it is the second gen one though.  :hat
