Thanks for all the info Azyiu! If you're on facebook and you want to follow some of my work check out my photography page facebook.com/brettcullenphotography

"Liked" your fb page.  ;)  But you need to have some pictures of cats! You have a photography page but no cats pics?!  :lol

I have looked into it, but from what I've heard from fellow photographers Is that there is some issues with them, I heard soft focus is a main issue. The 7D Mk II is supposively going to launch this year, and that would probably bring more of a price drop to the 7D! If I go to the store And the 7D performs well I'll probably get that!

Again, whatever you end up buying it up to you, but if a FULL-FRAME 6D is within your budget, I would strongly suggest you go with a full frame D-SLR. The 7D from what I've heard doesn't have that serious of a AF issue, rather it is quite "noisy" in low light conditions, despite it features a dual DIGIC 4 processor. Then again, try it out if you get a chance, or rent it for a week and decide.  ;)

Fixed, Cats, and Dog pictures are on there https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.460639490658325.107874.374646649257610&type=1 :) (Edit: as I was posting this it seems you saw the album) and definitely! We'll see how my shooting goes this summer and how much income I make off of that to put towards a camera!

I feel inspired today to go out and take pictures, but am trying to think of what direction I want to go after. I just FEEL like I NEED to create something today. It's an itch I can't explain.

Oh and on a side note, anyone here know much about photographing people? Like, people who wants to send in headshots somewhere? A friend of mine really wants me to shoot headshots of her and I agreed since I want more portfolio work. I've never shot people with the intention of making them look purposefully good. Any tips DTF?

When I First started, I watched a lot of tutorials online about proper composition and posing for the model, then it's good to get good subject isolation, usually achieved by a really blown on out background. If you have a low aperture prime, like a 50mm 1.8 or something a long those lines that is ideal for portraiture in my opinion. But if you don't have one of those then try and zoom in all the way on your zoom lens to get optimal bokeh. The lower the aperture the better for that. Another thing to consider is using your flash to get a little twinkle in the eyes.

I am glad you mentioned about using a flash or strobe light.

Check out this book titled: Speedliters Handbook Learning to Craft Light by Syl Arena: https://www.amazon.com/Speedliters-Handbook-Learning-Craft-Speedlites/dp/032171105X

That is a good... strike that... that is a GREAT book for all Canon users!! Arena talks about all the photography, lighting basics at the top of the book, and then goes into specifics on all things Canon and its Speedlites and all, by giving all kinds of examples, testing etc. Check it out, I learned ALOT from just checking out illustration and demo shots in that book, before I even read a single word, no joke!  Highly recommended.  :tup :tup

Thanks for all the info so far. The lowest I have is a 28mm 1:2.8 prime, looking to get a 50mm for my kit. I also have 18-55mm and a 55-200mm (both zoom) lenses. I don't have an off camera flash, and I don't normally like to use flash but I'll give it a shot. I might be able to come up with a strobe light before we shoot. I'm really looking forward to this but also pretty anxious. For both myself and her.

I obviously didn't take this, but an incredibly cool picture none the less.

This is a lake with large methane deposits beneath it. When the lake freezes over, bubbles of methane gas get trapped in the ice. I bet it smells excellent come spring time  :lol

So I decided that I will save up for a 5D mk II :) it way more affordable for me compared to a 6D, I can find a decent one around here for about 1500$ so I will put my money towards that! :)

I'm hoping the end of 2013, for an 18 year old college student, working 2 part time jobs, it takes awhile to get proper funds for it :( I hope I can get it sooner

Got you, and good luck! IMHO, the thing with D-SLR bodies is, unless you have a deep pocket, you can never keep up with all the latest models. So nevermind the 5D2 would be a 4-yr-old camera by end of this year. I am sure it will still be a very nice and capable upgrade for you.

I honestly think it will be the perfect camera for me until I start to make professional money with this. My photographer friends around town think I could with the work I put out, but I still have a ways to go I think!

That's the spirite, dude, always want to get better. Oh, having said that, aside from camera body and lenese, what editing software do you use? I use Adobe Lightroom 4 for my editing / processing. Although I too have Adobe Photoshop, I hardly ever use it nowadays.

Well, Im very unfamiliar with Lightroom, and the fact that being on a Mac it helps sync all my photo libraries in one convenient spot is nice. And I also don't have the money to spend on it :(

Rest assured, the Adobe Lr4 works well on both Mac and PC. I started using Lr during its version 3 era. At first I had the same worries (I started off using the default Canon DPP program), but as soon as I get a hang of using it (which took one a few tries) I don't see myself switching to anything else!

And there is a Lr forum that is created and managed by a bunch of expert Lr enthusiasts too. So you don't have to worry about being the only one using it out there.  ;)

Hey guys thought I'd post another picture!  :tup

This one is one of my favourites from my trip to Hawaii this past summer. I went back into editing this one tonight and I liked the vintage camera look I made with it. Added a neat look to it that I've been really fond of lately. Yes this makes it almost look like an instagram style picture but hell I still think its cool. I was only shooting pictures for about 2 months around this point, I shot this photo on my Canon EOS 550D/T2i with my kit 18-55 lens at 18mm and 3.5 aperture. Not the sharpest most amazing photo in picture quality wise, but I thought the composition was really cool.  :)

Note this is also facebook degraded quality....
