My visual communication instructor is having our class do several photography based assignments for this quarter. The first one we were just assigned and that I just completed was focused on light. Not worrying about composition or anything ultra technical, just light. The other thing is he required they all be black and white as to only focus on content and not colors.

Here's the highlights of what I took for the assignment:

I want to buy a 50mm lens and I've been looking at a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II. It seems to get a lot of praise and from the pics I've seen it takes great shots.

I'm going to order it tonight when I get home from work.

Smart Choice man! I love that little lens, I recently upgraded to the sigma 50mm 1.4, but that 1.8 is such a wicked deal! I highly recommend it! A lot, if not all of the portraits I've posted in this thread were taken with the 1.8. :tup

I'm jelly, I definitely want my next lens to be 50mm prime. Though I just got a new toy in the mail, a 28mm 2.8 prime lens. Excited to mess around with this.

The Nikon 50mm 1.8 D is definitely a good portrait lens, if you spend the extra money and get the 1.8 G then thats probably the best buy :)

Yeah I bought it slightly used last year from a buddy (who's been taking concert photos since the mid 70s!). I'm satisfied with it, since it's my first system camera so I have it as a "practice" camera. Then I will probably upgrade. I also have these little rings for taking macro shots.

That's some nice lenses you've got there.

I see from you last post that you are saving up for a 60D. Well, I'd say and suggest you try and save up more for a 6D in stead. It is time to do a real upgrade and go for a full-frame body, IMO.

I'm planning on going to that eventually, but from the research I've been doing, and for me I shoot a lot of sports and apparently the focusing capabilities on the 6D aren't that great, its only got 1 cross type autofocus point, the same as my t2i/550D, where as the 60D has 9, and its focusing speed is quicker apparently. So for portraiture I'm sure the 6D would be perfect for me, but because of my sports photography the 6D just doesn't seem like a logical choice. I may be wrong though  :blush What do you think Azyiu?

Well, noted you needs and concerns, but I don't think the 6D focusing speed would be any less than the 60D, and they both of a similar 9-point AF system. IMHO, as long as the 6D is within your budget, I would definitely go for a better built, better image quality camera. Plus, the 6D is a full frame D-SLR no less! I just hope I help you in picking the "right" camera (60D vs. 6D) for you. Keep us posted on your decision.

Thanks for your kind word. That tripod is really LIGHT, and it weights at around just under 3lbs, I think; yet its load limit is a whopping 12lbs!! The only downside (for some it is) is that, it only reaches eye level or at around 5'5" when fully extended. I have zero problem with it, but I am sure some photographers need their tripods much longer or taller for their needs.

I believe the 70D is rumored to be coming out sometime in the near future. May be worth your while to wait for that (if you don't want to go for the 6D). From what I've read, if you're going to buy a 60D, you might as well save some money and get the T3i, since it's better in a lot of ways.

I definitely plan on looking at the 70D, but the T3i gets beat by the 60D for sure

T3i Vs 60D comparison chart

The Main thing I'm looking at is CROSS TYPE autofocus points. Cross type autofocus points help grab focus in fast motion situations such as sports which I shoot a lot of. the 60D definitely has more cross type sensors than the 6D, thats another reason why I like the 60D. If I had enough money I'd go to a 5d Mk 2 maybe. We'll see what I can find for deals!

Two things here:

1) I might have missed some of your older posts, but what are the lenese you are currently using? If fast and accurate focusing is what you aim for, the camera body might not be the only factor you need to be thinking about.

2) I upgraded to the 5D3 from 5D2, and I thought both focus fairly fast and accurate. Once in a long while I would be shooting candid shots with a model, or dancers in motion; and I would go with the 70-200mm L f/2.8 IS II lens. The lens and body (both 5D2 and 5D3) seem to go well together, and I hardly encountered any "slow" or inaccurate focusing issue that might concerned you.

Ive got the 70-200 F/4L on my Canon 550D/t2i for sports shooting. Its an insanely quick focusing lens. But its not insanely accurate. I've heard a body with more cross type points it grabs onto the most accurate spot easier.

Not insanely accurate as in? Also, what focusing mode do you use on your camera? One shot? AI Focus or AI Servo? For moving objects (animals or daners or whatever), I usually go with the AI Focus mode; and for everything else I tend to use One Shot.

I'm using AI Focus as well, a lot of the time if a player is right up against the boards for hockey it will focus on the boards which is just behind them and not the player.

I see. Well, it can be very tricky shooting moving players inside a hockey ring though. My guess is you are doing most of the right things as it, yet the tricky background is what "confuses" your camera and lens when shooting. It is hard to do, but I would try using a single AF point, AND try and chase the action. At least that's my approach when shooting action shots.

Thats what I've been doing lately and it seems to work well! I thought maybe a better body with better autofocus points would help but you're right with it probably being the lens that is mostly relied on for the focusing!

I have looked into it, but from what I've heard from fellow photographers Is that there is some issues with them, I heard soft focus is a main issue. The 7D Mk II is supposively going to launch this year, and that would probably bring more of a price drop to the 7D! If I go to the store And the 7D performs well I'll probably get that!

Again, whatever you end up buying it up to you, but if a FULL-FRAME 6D is within your budget, I would strongly suggest you go with a full frame D-SLR. The 7D from what I've heard doesn't have that serious of a AF issue, rather it is quite "noisy" in low light conditions, despite it features a dual DIGIC 4 processor. Then again, try it out if you get a chance, or rent it for a week and decide.  ;)
