I've had an old external flash in my closet for years which had old battery crud in it.  I finally decided to take it apart and clean it, and after putting it back together it works.  Now I'm not really sure how to use it.  It's a Vivitar 2800 "auto thyristor" and my camera is a Nikon D3100.  I simply put it in the hot shoe, went through the menu and set the flash control from TTL to Manual.  This was enough to allow the camera to trigger the flash.  After poking around a bit, I read that this can be dangerous and the flash trigger voltage could ruin some modern DSLRs and is not recommended without checking.  oops.  Anyway, I checked the voltage and its 147V, where my camera's max is 250V.  No sweat.

Now what?  The camera menu allows control of the flash intensity, but I figure that only works with newer "smart" flashes.  Since this one connects only via the central contact pin, I assume the camera can only act to trigger the flash.  There are 2 auto modes and a manual mode on the flash, but I'm not really sure how they operate.  There is a slider to select ISO/ASA, but this does not connect to any of the electrical components inside the unit; it only serves as a user guide telling you what aperture to use.  I do understand the concept of max flash sync shutter speed, which is 1/250 on my camera, but that's about it.  The user's manual isn't very clear to me.  The flash auto modes simply expose a light meter through either of 2 small holes depending on which range you select.

That's very cool. Wish I had a decent camera...
I've been drinking beer since I was 18 and dabbled since I was 16. I have at least 500 beer bottles in my collection and love the fancy shit though my wallet doesn't. I'll drink liquor not even five times a year including shots or mixed drinks. Jack Daniels and Coke is an easy go-to for me. Very smooth nads candy sweet.

rumborak's shot was indeed cool, but I'd like to point out you DO NOT need a super nice / professional grade camera to take good to great pictures! Learn about photography basics, and remember practice makes perfect!

I made some small edits to the photos I posted a few months ago just using the free view NX software that came with my camera.  I guess its a bit like lightroom.  They were just changes to contrast and brightness if I remember correctly.  I think it made a huge difference:

I plan on printing and framing these soon.

I just bought a 35mm f/1.8 lens for my nikon D3100, mostly for indoor low-light use.  The kit lens is 18-55 f/3.5 which just doesn't cut it in most low light conditions.  Results are pretty good, but I have to pay closer attention to the focus at the large apertures due to the super small depth of field.

Also, even though my camera is the entry level model from 4 years ago, I see no reason to replace/upgrade.  The new D3XXX seems to just add pixels, and the D5XXX uses the same sensor but adds some more AF points.  The D7XXX would allow me to use an old AF lens I have since there is an AF motor in the camera body, but the other features are too "pro" level, and would just confuse and get in my way (dual SD cards, several user profiles, etc.).  I suppose those extra features are useful to someone who shoots daily, but do nothing to a casual user like me.

Edit: Another thought.  I wear glasses, and can't get my eye close enough to the viewfinder to see the whole frame at once without moving my head around.  Anyone else have this problem?  I can't be the only one who uses a camera while wearing glasses.  I notice that I don't have this issue on my old film SLR.  Could the viewfinder just be a bit skimpy on my entry level DSLR?

Edit: While i'm still thinking about it, what is this button on the lens mount bezel?

I have that same lens and it's all I use for almost everything. I love using it everywhere I go, it's perfect for fast pictures esp with my 2 year old running all over the place. I have a D5200 and I think the difference between the 3,5 & 7 series only becomes important on the variety of shots you take and ergonomics of control. Like you said those features become useful the more you take pictures and find use for them like extra AF points, higher ISO, extra FPS, etc.. I will upgrade to a D7200 at some point and make use of the faster shutter speed, dual SD card and builtin wifi mostly until then I'm more than happy with the D5200.

And FYI The D5xxx series has the same sensor as the D7xxx series and not D3xxx as you mentioned

I do need to get a faster and wider lens in the 12-28mm range as the kit lens is lacking at times.
Currently I have 4 lenses

Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye
35 mm f/1.8G
55-200mm f/4-5.6G
the stock 15-55mm kit lens

Hi all! I have a photography related question and figured this would be a good place to ask!

I am not a photographer and do not know much beyond my iPhone camera. Long story short, I work in marketing for an engineering firm. I am looking to purchase a camera so I can visit newly constructed buildings and take pictures of the buildings to be used on different pieces of marketing material. For example - last week I was at a ground breaking for a new office building and took photos on my phone because it was the best thing available to me at the time.

I am looking into pricing out what it would cost for my company to buy a camera to use primarily for this type of purpose (basically taking pictures of buildings). I'm looking for camera suggestions. I'm guessing anything below $500 (which I realize isn't much in the world of cameras) will get approved automatically, so I'd like to try to keep it to $500 or below if possible. I may be able to spend more, but I'll probably need to provide some specific justification if it creeps above $500.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Meant to reply to this yesterday. For under $500 there is the entry model that jasc15 uses Nikon D3100 which should more than suffice your needs and should be able to find great deals on them for under $400 easily. I don't know the Canon equivalent of the D3100, there should be deals on that as well. If buildings are your primary objective I'd imagine you'll need a wide angle lens as well, though that you can do a bit later once you get used to the default lens.
I'd also suggest learning some basic photography skills to make your pictures stand out. Hope this helps, if there is anything more specific you want to know I can chime in.

Was browsing amazon and found this which seems like a pretty good deal all under $500.

So, I've been shooting my Nikon D90 for 7 years now, mostly underwater.  I thought it was time for an upgrade.  I made a huge jump up too the Nikon D810 full frame.  Mind you, for me to upgrade, it's more than just the Cam...it's also the Underwater housing ($4100).  I just felt for me to take the next step...I needed to get into a professional camera system.  So far, I am really impressed with the upgrade.  I went out first day with it yesterday and took some shots.  See what you guys think!

Thanks Guys!  Yeah... it's gonna be a bit of a learning curve as I'm sure you know.  This camera has a LOT of functions for me to learn  :lol  and that difficulty is compounded when it's in a housing and underwater.  I like a good challenge though!  We will see how it does when I wet test it in May  ;D

Hey guys. I'm just starting to get into photography, so I'm actually going to start following these threads I've seen for years! I don't have much to show yet, I've been reading a lot the past few weeks mainly because I haven't had the time to actually go out and shoot anything. I got my first camera and new lens recently. I hope to mainly get competent at portraiture stuff to compliment my hobby of cosplaying and such. There's some awesome stuff from you guys here!
