I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Don't you feel like those roads go on forever?!  You look and it stuns you that you've traveled for 2 hours and everything feels the same.

Western New York is like that. The roads are on perfect 90 degree angles from each other and you can go for a half hour dead straight. I think the line of sight is a couple miles ahead.

Thought I'd join the fun:

A tree near Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.  This is probably my best photo of the trip, but the focus is a bit too soft.  Not sure what I did wrong.  f/16, 1/125, ISO-200, +1EV

This next one is a bit better in that regard.  Its amazing the color you get from dead wood.  I guess I'm just still learning the camera since I apparently had ISO set to auto. f/16, 1/640, ISO-3200, +1 EV.  I only just looked at the photo data when posting this image, and am surprised how good ISO-3200 looks.  Imagine if it were 100?  I wonder why it set the ISO and shutter so high.

Edit:  I guess adding the +1 EV to the exposure settings isn't necessary, since that just tells the computer to use settings that will overexpose the image by one stop.  At least that's my understanding of that setting.

Some street photos from this old district in Hong Kong.

Before there were those big box electronic stores, there were these old fashioned / neighborhood electronic stores like this one.

Wow, I love the contrasts of those pics :tup .

I guess it's my time to contribute to this thread with some pics from my trip to England, back in January this year. Although I wished I had a decent camera, my phone's did a better work than what I'd expected, so here are some which actually look great.

Loch Ness

London (duh)

British Museum

Bournemouth beach

More of Bournemouth beach

Surprise!
You can see the pics in full size if you click on them or see them all here.

I'd love to share more if there's enough people interested on them ::) .

Is it possible, since you can vary the ISO setting of the sensor, to have varying ISO across the sensor?  There are already variable density filters to have half the image underexposed by a stop or so, but this could achieve the same thing.  I've never heard of such a feature, but I wonder if it is technically possible.

Interesting idea. I can't say if it is technically possible, but I think it would be a beeyatch to meter THAT one shot. I also think it is easier to either compose a HDR photo, or simply edit such a complex lighting shot on PS or something?

Hey people, I've been wanting to take up some new hobbies, and photography has really interested me. However, I know practically nothing about cameras and lenses and all that kind of stuff. My birthday is coming up and I thought about trying to save up and get a pretty good camera so I can go take some pictures when I start going on hiking trails soon. Does anyone have any recommendations? I know it's not as simple as picking up a camera and pressing buttons, but I have to learn somehow.  :)

Just know that the difference between a $400 camera (entry level SLR) and a $4000 camera will be lost on a beginner, or even an amateur.  The main difference between the 2 is just functionality that makes life easier for the guy who is shooting all day every day.  Those features will only confuse and distract from learning.

From the Bronx Zoo.  I was surprised by the color on this one, since it doesn't look this way in the ambient light.

Very cool!

I'm going to get a Nikon D3300, there's an Amazon package that costs $600 which includes the camera and kit lens, an extra zoom lense, a 32 GB SD card, a case, and a WiFi adapter since this one doesn't have built in WiFi.

I'm not too familiar with WiFi use in cameras, but there are WiFi SD cards, which may eliminate the need for a dedicated WiFi adapter.

The D3300 seems to be the newer version of the D3100, which I have.

Yeah, the D3300 might be the best for the value today. The 5300 wasn't much different, mainly just having a swivel screen, and built in wifi, and maybe more autofocus points, which I could care less about. I'm looking forward to getting it and learning with it, I'm going up to Commerce in Atlanta this weekend for the drag races so I figured that would be a cool event to bring the camera too. It should be arriving Wednesday!

Not "professional" at all, this was taken with my LG G3 camera. Amazing how close to the object it can still focus, I was about 5 cm from the bee.

Nice! I actually have an LG G3 as well. When it's not too busy being a pain in the ass, this phone actually has a pretty good camera for what it is.

I took these today, just got my camera last night. They're all a bit the same, with focus up front but a blurry background, I tried to add some variety, but I figured it's my first time using it. I've looked up a lot on how to use the camera in manual mode, and it's gonna take a bit of practice. Unfortunately I only took these in Program mode, but it's a start. I'm trying to steer away from Auto as quick as I can. These were taken with a Nikon D3300 and the kit lens.

Cool.  What aperture did you use for those?  The kit lens goes down to only 3.5 I think.

Yeah, 3.5 is the lowest. I wanna say it may have been 4 or 5, I can't really remember. That's something I need to take note of more. I'm understanding how the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work, still trying to completely grasp how they all work together. It's pretty fascinating.

I bought this book a while ago.  It's a good explanation of the function of the 3 main photography parameters, ISO, shutter, aperture.  Not very technical, and quite helpful.  I understand them on a technical level but it hasn't helped me take better pictures.  The idea is to look at a subject, and already have an intuitive idea what your settings should be before you shoot.  This takes more practice than book reading.

I might consider getting that. And  I suppose it's something that would take getting used to, trying to change settings ahead of time.

That bee looks pretty aggressive to me... I probably wouldn't want to mess with it, lol!

Yeah, some people go bananas over bees.  I just continue to move around as if they are not there.  Don't bother them, and they wont bother you.

I used to pet the fat plump ones all the time as a kid and never once got stung. This was taken last week by a friend of mine. It was content to just chill on my finger and clean itself a bit before flying off after about 5 minutes or so.
