I only check out videos if I need to get up for an album.  The words “Evergrey is releasing an album” is extra strength Viagra for me.

These interviews with Pete Pardo are really good, I've been following his work over the last several months. I also liked this interview, the bit with Tom talking about LaBrie and Dream Theater was amazing.

Decent song.  These guys are very hit and miss for me, mostly miss, but I'll still check this out when it drops.

Could have done without James on that honestly.  Reminds me of Katatonia.

Interesting song and interesting vocal interplay I'll admit.  Probably the weakest of the 4 released though.

Yea sadly the JLB song didn't really resonate much with me on first listen.  I plan on getting the album though when I get home from work today.

So, I've been listening to this new album today at work.  I don't know what it is with Evergrey that not a lot of their music really clicks with me.  I find that the songs all just kind of blend into each other sounding very similar from song to song.  That said there are some wicked pissah guitar solos on this.  I just don't know if it's enough to make me want to keep listening.  It's good music.  Well executed, the mix is good, everything sounds good, I just can't seem to latch on to any of these songs.

I felt the same way about The Atlantic too.  I listened to it a few times, and it was pretty good, but I don't think I need to hear it again after maybe 3 or 4 listens.

I've felt exactly the same about their last few albums (and indeed most of their albums). I love Recreation Day and The Inner Circle which I find really emotionally impactful, and I really like Hymns for the Broken as it has a lot of really strong hooks. A lot of the other albums are good but they just don't really grab me.

Only one listen of the new one so far and it'll possibly be the same, but I'll give it more goes to see how well it settles for me.

Recreation Day and The Inner Circle are the only two albums from this group that when I listen to them I rarely skip any of the songs.

I am a huge fan of this band, but it does seem they've been caught in a bit of a rut for a while. There are too many songs with djent-style chugging. There are so many songs that start out with Jonas pounding out a double bass groove and single string chugging right out of the gate. It has gotten to a point where if you played me isolated rhythm guitar tracks of a lot of the songs from the last three albums, I would struggle to tell them apart. Then you have the slower tempo songs that just plod, plod, plod.

Having said that, I'm always able to find redeeming qualities. The guitar solos and Tom's voice. They seem to never fail.

At the moment, "In the Absence of Sun" is the stand out track for me. I still need to give the album a few more listens to see how I feel about it overall.

I'm disappointed after 1 listen, but then again, it took two years for The Atlantic to click. I haven't heard every Evergrey album, but The Storm Within is my favorite of theirs. Perfect from start to finish.

Hmm, I might have to retract my previous statement. Second listen is already a big step up on the first. Absence of the Sun/Eternal Nocturnal is an especially fantastic two-punch. Clearly need some more listens but this may well be their best since Hymns and maybe even since The Inner Circle.

One listen; I found myself wanting it to be a bit heavier.  But we'll see if that changes as I listen to it more.  I like the 3 before this one quite a bit - I think I like the Atlantic the most.  But each of them needed a little time so maybe this one will be the same.

I like it!  To be honest, I hadn't listened to any of these in a LONG time, they're really not a go-to band for me.  The vocals, especially on the early albums are just a bit too over the top for me, I'm glad he's toned down that way over the top emotive style it just sounded...I don't know...contrived maybe?

So now that Tom has dialed that back and become a more listenable vocalist to me, the problem now is I just don't hear anything in these songs that makes me want to hear them again and I think I've put my finger on it and I have to call out the vocals again.  The vocal melodies are getting very repetitious.  Tom seems to have a limited bag of tricks that he goes to for vocal melodies and if you put on 3 or 4 songs from this band, any era, you'll hear the same set of about 10 or 15 bluesy vocal stylings that he uses constantly in just about every song and after a while it all just sounds like one long mid-temp metal song.

I'm afraid it's the ONLY song from the last 3 albums that I can remember the name of.  It's probably the best song they've dropped since "Recreation Day"

I already deleted it from my iPod though, like I wrote earlier, they're a very hit and miss band for me, more miss than hit.  This album just sounds like a continuation of the previous one, but "In The Absence of Sun" is a brilliant song.

I only listened once but this sounded like typical Evergrey. There are much better songs on the album than the first three singles though. Stories, The Absence of Sun, The Beholder were very good. The rest kinda blended together but I'll revisit this. I thought it had potential and might be their best since Hymns.

While I think their best albums are In Search of Truth, Recreation Day and The Inner Circle, they definitely sound more inspired since Hymns for the Broken. However, I didn’t enjoy The Storm Within for some reason. Really enjoyed The Atlantic; and now with this latest I just can’t seem to get into it. I must dig the next one.

I should stop trying to listen to an album for the first time in my car. All the background noise makes it impossible to really get a feel for an album. This album is definitely a grower though. I'm really enjoying it. Some albums are an instant hit like The Storm Within, others need time like The Atlantic and Escape of the Phoenix. Hymns took a long time to click as well.

Crank up the volume?  Honestly, I think I'm the opposite.  My car has a bose sound system which isn't top of the line or anything, but music does sound pretty good in the car and I can usually pay more attention to the music while I drive vs. doing other things.  It's just very rare these days for me to listen to music and not being doing something else so driving ends up being a good way for me to actually digest an album. Having said that, I finally put the album on my phone so I'll probably start listening to it more now during my commute.

I've been trying for a year to perfect the equalizer in my music app to sound good in my new car with varying degrees of success. Turning it up made it worse and I could barely hear Tom. I have an equalizer setting for each of my headphones and the car. On my day off I'm going for a drive, so hopefully after fucking with it some more, it sounds better. I think my car just has shitty speakers though, and not much of a sound system on top of that.

I like the album more and more with each listen, but I also get kirk's point about vocal melodies and Katt's point about lyrics because I can only take so much of

I am so broken, I can't go on,
I am the master of the sad trombone,
I am so guilty, I feel alone,
And I've been feeling that from day one

type of lyrics.

I want to like this band, but I have a hard time getting past the fact that Tom sounds like a sad, Swedish Michael Bolton.  It’s that same overwrought, emotional delivery but with Tom, that emotional delivery is generally a melancholic malaise.  I would actually love to hear Evergrey do a gloomy version of When a Man Loves a Woman.
