I finally got Imaginaerum and have listened to it a few times. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not much of a NW fan anymore but was curious to hear this.

I think the album is pretty good but it's WAY too long - if the title-track, Storytime, Arabesque, Last Ride of the Day and the second half of Song of Myself were left out, this could be a solid album. There's still good stuff, though; my favorites are Rest Calm (which reminds me of Amorphis), Scaretale and Slow, Love, Slow. The more typical, safe NW songs didn't impress me that much but were ok. Another thing I have to criticize is that the guitars and drums aren't playing anything particularly interesting stuff, mostly power chords and basic rhythms, except on SLS. If there was no orchestra, these songs would sound quite hollow.

My album rating: 3/5

Basically I know only Nemo, Amaranth, Master Passion Greed and Wishmaster, so I got today Century Child and Imaginaerum (2CD). I hope that I like them.

If you like Tarja's voice on Nemo and/or Wishmaster, you will probably like Century Child, as the songwriting is top notch.

She has an awesome voice, but I prefer Anette.

Oh, I forgot Sleeping Sun. And Storytime.

Some people like her, and others are very put off by her.  If you are not put off by her voice, I really think you will love CC.  It is probably my favorite album of theirs, and I would consider it their most consistent.

Century Child is indeed a great album. Sometimes I play it back-to-back with Once and it always makes Once sound even muddier than it already is lol. My favorite album is Dark Passion Play, can't live without it.

Century Child has my two favorite nightwish songs, beauty of the beast and ever dream, but I like once and wishmaster as better albums.

What?  Since when don't they?  I saw them in Atlanta on the DPP tour.

me too. I saw them 3 times on that tour. they do tour the US, they just don't have their dates up yet. The album isn't even out in America yet. So give it time.

@Bosk1, You are correct on CC being topnotch material. if they had continued with that musical style I would have been in a Nightwish hole for the rest of my life. But Wishmaster, Once and DPP are also great albums in comparison (leaving out production and likewise comparisons).

I'll continue to sayz it ... Century Child is the best them. No question. They're most balanced album (with Tarja).

I think I'll update mine, the list keeps changing from time to time, but the top slot never changes:

Century Child
Wishmaster
Once
Dark Passion Play
Oceanborn
Angels Fall First

I have no idea where Imaginaerum sits until I get the fucker on tuesday.

I think Imaginaerum is the freakin' beast, followed close by Once... and I have a special kind of love for Nightwish with live orchestra as well.

I think Imaginaerum is by and large the best album to come out of 2011, even though admittedly it is not coming out in the US for a few more days. I would be happy if Nightwish just played this entire album and walked off the stage.

I think it's so painfully stupid that the record company decides to release the album over a month late in the US. It's like they want people to illegally download the album. I just don't understand it.

Wouldn't it be funny if this turned out to be a psychological test, and we're the subjects?

Loving Imaginaerum. Seems to be the perfect balance of pushing into new territory ("Slow, Love, Slow"  and "Song of Myself") and the traditional Nightwish sound ("I Want My Tears Back" and "Storytime"). Really excited to see the movie.

So I reckon the album is now released in the US? About time :D

I don't think the album lacks a bad song. They're all beautifully pulled off and put together, I think. The only thing that bugs me is that they put the title track, which is in my opinion more of an overture, last on the album; I think it should've been the album opener. I saw a track-by-track video with Tuomas where he described it as a "song for the credits" (somewhat paraphrasing since I don't remember his exact words)... and well, can't say I agree with that.

Otherwise, I love it. I think it is their best album to date.

If you agree with "song for the credits," then why wouldn't you agree with it being last?

Well to be honest i really like Anette's vocals on Imaginaerium since it was an amazing album  :metal her highlights would probably be: Storytime, Scaretale, Song for My Self, Last Ride of The Day and this album would be my favorite of nightwish :).. They did an amazing job so far!!.. hopefully they will do an American Tour this year or next year so i can see them :]!!..

I think the point he is trying to make is that although it is a nice way to end the album, it should have stood more for an overture than an ending credit score.

Picked this up last night and listened to the first six tracks.  Am spinning it again now.  Interesting.  I already like it more than DPP.  One thing I noticed right off the bat, which I called from the very first time I heard DPP:  Unlike the last album, it is clear that these songs are written with Anette's voice in mind, which makes the vocal parts fit better with the music and takes this album up a notch right off the bat.  I will also say that Tuomas is really a very good song writer.  I may not always like or agree with his artistic choices, but I have to admit that he is incredibly talented in the writing department.  More commentary after I've listened a bit more...
