Thanks for sharing that interview. I especially liked this bit:
Basically it has a lot to do with microcosms and macrocosms and how they are a mirror reflection of each other. How our existence in the universe is so astronomically minute and pathetic in the vastness of space and time but at the same time, an entire micro-universe exists within us that is equally vast and complex. So the songs are based on these theories and ideas.
I've been listening to the album a lot more, recently. It's growing on me with each additional listen, as I am able to more easily distinguish and dissect the differences between individual tracks. Also, as I suspected, reading through the lyrics while listening has helped a lot. One thing that sticks out to me is just how consistent of an album this is; every song brings something worthwhile to the complete work, and there are no bad moments. On the flip side of that, there aren't many really astonishing moments either (at least, not yet for me), but I'm still optimistic that those will come. The consistency is a testament to the maturity of their songwriting
Preliminary rankings would probably look a bit like this…
1a Dark Matter Gods
1b The Astral Dialogue
1c Celestial Effigy
The more I listen to this section of the album, the more I appreciate the sequence of the above three tracks. They fit so well together, and after a while I've come to the conclusion that they might as well be considered three movements of a single, larger, song. Individually, they are all fantastic in their own way. I looove the guitar work throughout, looove Haughm's delivery (particularly in Dark Matter Gods), and looove the lyrics (a running theme throughout the album). Yum yum yum!
4. Plateau of the Ages- There is no doubt in my mind that this piece will grow on me a lot, and perhaps end up being my favorite song on the album. Right now it's still a little unfamiliar, and there's a lot there for me to digest. Part of my difficulty in digesting it can likely be attributed to its diversity, which is a big plus. I also suspect that this one will be amazing to hear live, assuming they play it (it's got encore written all over it, in the same vein as Our Fortress is Burning, imo).
5. Birth And Death of the Pillars of Creation- This one has really grown on me. Great build up, excellent lyrics, and really interesting (and heavy) textures.
6. Vales Beyond Dimension- I wish I could agree with you, adace, but this one hasn't quite clicked for me. I don't know what it is- maybe that the first couple minutes sound a little doomy to my ears (or imagination), and I'm not a big fan of doom. It picks up after that though, around the same time that the tremolo picking kicks in, and the lyrics are also astonishingly great.
I omitted the three acoustic interludes, as I don't see them as stand-alones. They're very good breathers, but that's about it.
Not a bad song on the album
