Hey all, my friend really wants to learn how to play the Spirit Carries On with me on bass.  Only problem is I can't seem to figure it out.  Combination of low JM in the mix plus being a bit of a bass newbie, from what I can hear though it doesn't sound too difficult.  Can anyone help me play this or just give tips for playing by ear in general?  Thanks!

It's pretty easy.  Don't need a six (or even a five).  A 4-string in drop-D is adequate, and that low D only comes into play once the solo is done.

The bass seems to be easier to pick out on Score than the studio recording, so that might make a better guide.  Can't remember the mix on LSFNY.

The verse, off the top of my head:
D-F#-G-D-(C# as a leading tone)-B-A-G#-A

Prechorus/chorus:
G-A-D-(C#)-(B)-(A)-G-A-D

That's the gist of it.  there are fluorishes ansome slightly more complex bits, but that's most of the basic outline.  I don't remember that bridge/solo off the top of my head, though most of what is under the solo is in B minor.

If you use Guitar Pro, here is my transcription of The Spirit Carries On. I think it's mostly accurate; at least the bass part should be fine.
