So am I, but I don't think it's better than Continuum. That record is really something else.

"Edge of Desire" destroys me every time, though. This is really premature but I think it's one of, if not the best song he's ever written.

I'm really starting to dig Assassin (the bridge is gorgeous) but I think my fave from the album so far is either War of My Life or Friends, Lovers or Nothing. But to be honest, I still think Continuum is in a completely different league. I'd have been completely fine with a 'Continuum 1.5'.

The problem I have with Assassin is that the transition to the guitar solo is REALLY awkward for me.

Literally every time I hear it I think the song's going up in pitch.  :lol

Huge thread revival here.

I was just checking out some John Mayer songs on Youtube, then I clicked on an interview he had with Mark Hoppus. I love a lot of his music but man... Everything is "how people see me", "what people know me for". Then you go to another interview and he just keeps going and going... The guy is so into himself it's ridiculous.

Yeah, he does come off as being completely self-absorbed. I don't really care for him as a person, but I like his music, and he's extremely talented.

That's my biggest gripe with him.  I've always said I'd enjoy his music a lot more if he didn't talk so much shit.

My favorite song of his. So good.

Speaking of John Mayer, his new album should be coming out relatively soon, I'd imagine, though I haven't seen a release date.

Last I heard a few months ago he suffered a vocal injury that prevented him from singing at all for a while.

Yes, but he had almost completed the album at that point. He just had a few vocals left to do, and I think (but I'm not positive) that he's done with the vocal rest at this point.

I've never been able to really get into him, although No Such Things and Why Georgia are some of the best adult alternative I've ever heard.

Not sure if you still have any interest, but if you ever come across his live DVD/CD Where The Light Is, I would give it a try. It's beautifully shot and you get to see all 3 facets of his musical personality in the 3 separate sets he does - acoustic, blues, and full band.

Seeing a portion of that DVD is what really piqued my interest in him. Having not listened to much of his work before, the solo in that concert's performance of "Gravity" floored me.

And we now have a 60-second preview of the new album's first single:

Here's the full single https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4FC9iuftAA

I listened to it once yesterday, thought it was pretty snoozy (though I guess one could say that about most of his music) and then found myself humming it for the rest of the day. Heard it again today, I think it's a nice song. The Beatles-esque bridge really elevates it. Love that part.

"Queen of California"
"The Age of Worry"
"Shadow Days"
"Speak for Me"
"Something Like Olivia"
"Born and Raised"
"If I Ever Get Around to Living"
"Love Is a Verb"
"Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967"
"Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey"
"A Face to Call Home"
"Born and Raised (Reprise)"

Seems like he's all-in with the cowboy/western aesthetic; though really all his albums have had different feels to them.

Wow that hook in the beginning sounds pretty late Beatles-y too. Just started listening to it, so I'm not sure what I think.

I'm still not sure if I'll enjoy an entire album of the "country" sound, but every part of Shadow Days still has a distinct John Mayer sound, so I'll probably get over it.

Big John Mayer fan. Great guitar player. Excellent songwriter. Continuum is incredible. Battle Studies is growing but very very good. I love Try! It's just fantastic. Looking forward to the new record.

I was getting so excited to go see him too. It's been so long. I feel terribly for the guy...really hope he's able to recover.

I can't imagine what it must feel like to be silenced like that. I know he's a guitarist first but jeez that's got to feel absolutely crippling.

Maybe a slight chance? It seems like he's just going to have to go through the same process as when he had that surgery the first time.

I can't imagine how much that sucks. I've never really gotten into his music, but I always did enjoy the guy's sense of humor, from what I've seen him do on television.

Yeah, maybe I'm blinded by my fandom but I always thought he was an alright guy with a slight judgment problem as to when to keep his trap shut. This is really a bummer though.

Maybe he'll play guitar with some other folks so he can still perform?

Eh all I've heard is the single and I'm not keen on the country tinged thing I guess. I hope the whole album isn't like that? I dig a lot of his work.
