Only 4 tracks on a double album would imply about 25-40 minutes per song.

That'd be awesome, but I don't really see Arjen straying that far from his usual pattern.

New quote by Ed Warby:

Just visited the Electric Castle to check some mixes and record a short interview. This is going to be a HUGE album...

Have you guys seen this? When asked about the concept of the album, Arjen responded:
Quote from: Mr. L
About...the Theory of Everything! There is physics involved, but mainly it's about human relationships and the emotional costs that come with treading the fine line between genius and madness.
Maybe we'll finally have characters along the lines of Einstein, Hawking, Curie, Feynman, Thorne, Higgs, Mandelbrot, Tesla, Lorentz, etc. I would actually seriously enjoy that. :corn

I've first heard of Ayreon due to James's involvement and bought The Human Equation. I'm almost ashamed to admit now that I didn't like it at the first listen but the second time was the slap in the face and punch in the guts I so much deserved and needed. It's such addictive music, great composition, perfect choice of singers and instrumentalists, the limited edition is one of the most beautiful album box sets I've ever seen, and maybe most importantly Arjen seems to be pretty much the kind of person I tend to immediately be friends with, a quirky Prog-Trek-Nerd, much like I am myself!

I really love DT but I wouldn't really know what to say to them as a group in a meet and greet or similar situation (that's why I'm not interested in M&Gs) beyond something like "thanks for the great work, continue doing what you love, maybe take more time off and more time to demo individual ideas before mashing them together, have a great concert, bye". Maybe that would be different with the individual members outside the group context. Despite being a vocalist and guitar player, I guess JR would be the kind of personality and sense of humour I would be most compatible with for an interesting conversation.

But with Arjen, whose approach to making music is somewhat similar to what I like to do, I could probably chat away for at least a few weeks: Music and bands in general, guitars and amps and other instruments, influences, (sci-fi) movies and TV shows, different singing styles, science, technology, (cover) art and design, music toys, computer games, cats, space exploration, and quite possibly a lot more. I haven't met the guy and without him touring with his projects it's highly unlikely but I'm sure it would be great fun.

The Human Equation was the best album of the decade 2001 to 2010 for me and I like 01 a lot too. So I'm very much looking forward to The Theory Of Everything.

Greetings...
Nef

Back to the vocalist thing-I prefer when albums have guest singers performing the vocals that you get, at most, two in a song. It was kind of getting to the point with Aryeon in particular where every song was being sung by so many people you needed charts to keep track of them, and I think that's one of the reasons I kind of soured on Arjen Lucassen's music, it became, for lack of a better word, gimmicky. There's also the problem where he plays damn near every instrument, uses the same drummer over and over, and the albums are all produced identically. It's like, why buy a new one when I got the Universal Migrator Pt 2 right there?

Could not agree more, with everything you said.  It's like, 01011001 was a good album I suppose, but in nearly every song, I was like, "Yep, I've heard that melody in another Ayreon song already."  Plus, like you said, he has definitely gone overboard with the guest vocalist thing.  Gimmicky is definitely the best way to describe his music now.  I still dig most of The Dream Sequencer and Into the Electric Castle, but I rarely revisit them.

Yep.

So, how does this "guess the musician" game work? I wasn't following any of the previous Ayreon releases despite have an opportunity to, so I've not heard of it before.

He usually posts a very short clip on facebook or his forum and gives the first person to guess the vocalist a prize.

Don't hold your breath.  Isn't his intention to not re-use vocalists?  Very few have appeared more than once.

I'll definitely follow these even though I'm not really into Ayreon. I predict he'll invite Tommy Karevik and/or Einar Solberg, Tommy had some time off before the start of this tour and Einar has only been doing some festivals this summer, so it's not impossible.

Tommy would be cool.  So would Rick Altzi.  He's quickly becoming a favorite 'metal' voice of mine.  Ditto with Kelly Sundown - thanks to Nem for putting me on to the latter two.

Marco is criminally underrated by the way. The dude's practically a Finnish Dio, and at 47 years old he sounds... 37. If Floor Jansen doesn't join Nightwish, he'll be the best singer that ever fronted a Finnish band.

I swear Arjen has already used all the good singers. Every singer I think of that I would want on this album has already been on an Ayreon album. :/
