Fuck. I enjoyed that trailer a lot more than I thought I was going to. Seeing as Arjen is referring to himself as Mr. L, I'm assuming this means we're getting some backstory from the guy who was in The Truth is in Here. If so, YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I have the 3CD Timeline set, which sufficiently quenches my Ayreon appetite. For my money it is about as good as a “Best of…” collection can be. Haven’t had urge to buy anything else, so casual fan here.

I am not as big a fan of THE as others, I almost think there are too many vocal parts going on. Same thing with ITEC. I am sure 01 has about the same number, but it doesn’t feel like it to me. That doesn’t mean Arjen doesn’t know how to handle various vocals. Indeed, he should produce the vocal tracks for every single rock/prog/metal album ever made from this day forward.

Unrelated, I stumbled upon something Ayreon related on youtube recently and learned something new: Arjen is one tall mother. I never knew that.

Believe me, I've met him. He's a tall mf! Also, very likeable and relaxed.

Both of you ... take it to the controversial opinions thread.  You both fail :youfail:

I'll second the comments by Nick and M.  ITEC is most like THE.  Star One albums are much heavier across the board if you like prog-metal.

This. In fact, I'm kind of over Arjen Lucassen's music. It's starting to feel a bit repetitive to me, his later albums coming off as pale copies of his original work. YMMV I'm sure.

I hear ya on the repetitive thing.  I liked Waking Dreams from the last album a lot, but every time I hear that section that Anneke sings (I am 99% sure that is her, going from memory), it sounds like a melody I've already heard in like 19 Ayreon songs.

So, yeah, I agree.  The Human Equation and 01011001 both have a handful of good songs, but both pale in comparison to The Dream Sequencer and Into the Electric Castle, which are the only two Ayreon albums someone needs, if you ask me.  Get those two albums and you have everything that is good about Ayreon.

lolno.

Even if you think newer stuff is repetitive, you're still leaving out the first two albums which are awesome.

My ranking would be

01011001
Flight of the Migrator
The Human Equation
Into the Electric Castle
Dream Sequencer

I don't have The Final Experiment or Actual Fantasy.

The Human Equation
The Electric Castle
Victims of the Modern Age
Space Metal
The Final Experiment
Embrace the Storm
Actual Fantasy
01011001
Universal Migrator
Dream Sequencer
On This Perfect Day

And the last album on that list I basically give an 8/10, hence why I love Arjen so damn much.

I can really understand why The Human Equation gets so much appreciation because it´s such a solid album, but for me Universal Migrator part 1&2 are the albums that made me a fan of his music back in 2000. It´s also the one album i keep coming back too.
I still love the concept of those albums, still get shivers when i hear Russell´s voice and Michael`s solo on A Dawn of a Million Souls and i also still to this day wondering how Arjen got Bruce to sing his ass of on Into a Black Hole!  :metal

Yeah. Star One was supposed to have Dickinson on it (iirc as the only singer) but Arjen revealed the project in an interview, and true to his name Bruce opted out.
It turned out for the better overall but I would have loved to hear more of that type of singing from him as this is the best performance in his life.

Into the Electric Castle and The Human Equation are both fantastic albums. 01011001 isn't quite on that level, but it has a lot of good material, especially The Fifth Extinction.

Dear god. That song owned so hard. Officially way excited for the rest of the album. The end where everything got super heavy was pure  :metal and the ending was probably the most moving section of music Arjen has ever created.

Bring on the rest. :caffeine:

I guess I'm just over AAH, because that song didn't really draw any sort of response from me.  I'd probably buy it if I got a really good price on it, but much like Victims of the Modern Age, all I really see is it just collecting dust in my collection after a week or two.

Dying off shortly after purchase is my definition of "average album".  VotMA was exactly that for me.  I listened to it 12 times, the last one being in Dec. 2010.  The fact that I haven't even thought about playing it in over a year is pretty damning.  I remember it didn't make my top 10 of 2010 when 2011 started, so I'm not surprised it quickly escaped my memory.

On this topic, I side with Nick.  That's a fail beyond fail, professor.  VOTMA continues to get mad props and lots of spins here.  Couple of so-so tracks, but the rest of it more than compensates.  My last.fm most played song list is almost exclusively VOTMA - that pretty much sums it up for me.
