Just now playing the bonus disc. 14 acoustic versions of ambeon and Ayreon songs. And they´re awesome!

What a talented singer this girl was.  :hefdaddy

Well, she doesn't do music anymore, so it makes a sort of sense to refer to her that way.

Oh... why would you give up on music? Meh. FIrst thought that came to my mind was that she was dead or something.

Sorry, should have clarified. She´s taken up painting as her main ´creative outlet´ appearantly. Shame, really.

Interesting that he's calling it a solo album. Didn't he write absolutely everything for his other projects anyway?
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Devin Townsend wanted to do the same, having different monikers.

I'd have to hear more about this.

I might be wrong, but I think he's doing all of the vocals on this one too. Which is what would make it more "solo".

Some awesome bundles for our European friends. Unfortunately the cost to the states is unreal. $42 after conversion for the bundle isn't too bad, but the shipping is then another 25 euro, or about $32, making it total around $74.

Agreed, although I was looking at the CD bundle, and with shipping to Maryland, it came to 42 Euro, making it about $58 USD. Still pretty pricey, and I would love to get the t-shirt, so I might have to wait another week or two to pre-order this (still have to pre-order Storm Corrosion as well, in addition to one or two more new albums coming out soon). The bundles look great, though!

I really don't want this to be a complete failure, but I worry. The strength of Ayreon and Star One is very much dependent on the wealth of vocal talent in the mix.

I completely expect that Arjen will have written music with his own voice in mind, and while the vocal talent certainly won't be there, I think the music he writes will make great use of his voice. Sorta like Kevin Moore in OSI.

So I'm looking for some advice here...

Ayreon is relatively new to me. I only have one album (the Human Equation), and I have really enjoyed it for the past few months. I am now curious to expand my collection further. What album would you guys suggest I check out next? Do they all tend to be near the same level of quality, or does anyone stand out above the rest?

Thanks.

The Human Equation is pretty much agreed upon to be Arjen's masterpiece, whether with Ayreon or otherwise, so start there.

Wow, sorry, I somehow hopped over that part when reading it the first time. :lol

In any case I'd say your next best best is Into the Electric Castle and either of the Star One albums.

I agree. Into The Electric Castle was his breakthrough album, and it solidified his presence in modern prog history, IMO. After that, you could venture on to the 2-part album Universal Migrator, whose two parts are titled The Dream Sequencer (a more moody, Floydian spacey/jammy album) and Flight Of The Migrator (a more balls-to-the-wall prog-metal beast).

If you can get through those albums, then I'd suggest getting 01011001 and his first album The Final Experiment. Both are pretty good, but the latter a bit same-y to me, while the former is a bit dated-sounding, but it helps complete the over-arching concept and story behind the Ayreon albums.

01011001 would be my choice. The concept won't make much sense at first, but it's much more accessible from a musical standpoint. I had trouble getting through ITEC and the Migrator albums at first because there's a lot of really forgettable stuff peppered about. Oh, and Final Experiment would be 10x better if the song "Banishment" was shelved completely. Eyes of Time, Sail Away to Avalon, and Merlin's Will are all absolutely stellar.

Just watched this! Sounds awesome! Definitely a return-to-Ayreon sound for Arjen! He says it fits into the Ayreon storyline so I'm intrigued as to how it will mesh with the pre-existing concept! Also - "Pink Beatles In A Purple Zeppelin"  :rollin

Having heard the Christopher Lee metal thing....no, it wasn't. Arjen at least doesn't take himself seriously. That Christopher Lee cd took itself very seriously.

Thanks.

I suggest
1. Universal Migrator (2 cds - "The Dream Sequencer" and "Flight of the Migrator") One disc is soft and mellow and the other is heavy.  Both discs are awesome.  This is my personal favorite of all Ayreon albums
2. Into the Electric Castle - Some great songs, but I like the vocal work on the Human Equation better
3. Star One - Space Metal.  -Space Metal is a perfect description
4. Then the rest of the albums, which all have some great stuff
