Finally got The Theater Equation on BluRay and watching it.

This thing is fantastic! Ace production, amazing performances, great mix.

I only have two minor complaints.
1. Irene Jansen is just....flat. Rotate her out for Floor and wow.
2. The dude taking over Rage....just didn't do it for me. I know they couldn't get Dev, and the choir plus growler was a good call, but the dude doing the leads just added way too much high pitch cheese and kind of took me out of it.

But wow this is an amazing concert. Contrasting to The Retinal Circus, it's nice to see a choir that's actually singing with microphones and everything as opposed to lip syncing.

Also, did I just see that the growler is a chick? Hell yea!

Of course a feminine face and long blonde hair isn't reason enough to rule out a guy ;)

I thought high pitch Rage guy was a nice touch.

That's cool. I hope I'm in the minority. But to me the character is Rage, a guy going full on high pitch vocals just doesn't say Rage to me.

I heard the Theater Equation and I liked it, but I think it was a shame that the original line-up was not complete. I missed Mikael's voice.

I thought high pitch Rage guy was a nice touch.

Listening now to the tryouts on the bluray, when they do the chorus to Pain without all the high pitch vocals, it sounds sooo much more intense.

Also, the high vocals at the end of Loser....you thought that was a nice touch?

Also it is so cool watching parts of the show with only the choir singers taking the lead. Some of these people can REALLY sing. (some less so) But really some of the Mikael parts sound really great with those growlers, I wish they would have done that with Anneke a bit more.

To be completely honest, the most disappointing thing is that this is a big Dutch production and there is not even a small appearance by Nicky.

I just really like high pitch vocals. Sometimes I get chills when these mutants belt out such notes.

Oh I do too......in the right context. I just felt like this was a very.....not right context for it is all.

I understand. Angry people don't shriek in rage, they yell, or in the case of metal or rock music, growl. I like both interpretations of the song.

I will not stand for you liking something that I do not!

Maybe it was just the guys voice? I wouldn't mind hearing what Ripper or Barlow could do with the exact same concept.

I'm with you on this one Adami. I absolutely hated the Rage guy. Loser's outro was especially painful to listen to for me.
I also really disliked Anneke taking over as Fear. Like... it doesn't sound good at all.  :justjen

The rest was absolutely stellar though, especially the band.

I actually didn't expect a new Ayreon more along the lines of Star One so i'm a bit bummed but honestly a new Ayreon is always exciting eitherway. He probably got inspired by the whole theater experience last year.

Wow, that's awesome! I was about to say it's a little early for a new Ayreon, then I realized TTOE was in 2013. Time flies.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

As much as I love most of Lucassen's work, it's Ayreon where he delivers the best music imo. I also thought it was a bit early but I'm pleasantly surprised. Now bring on the singers and the guest instrumentalists  :metal.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Holy shit, you're right! In my mind this was released, like, last year or something!  :(

Looking forward to it!  Looking at the vid, I think I see two singers from the Theater Equation there (from the choir, the stand-ins for both Irene and James during the try-out) and that guy Will Shaw? (I remember seeing some yt cover songs by that guy). Could be wrong though, haven't looked them up.  Anyways, those are singers I absolutely don't mind hearing on the album.

Also, I think it would be great if Arjen switches between Ayreon and a different project each time (Theory of Everything - Gentle Storm - New Ayreon - something else?). But only if his creative drive is there, offcourse.

Just posted on his Facebook page: A new Ayreon coming our way!

I wonder how this will tie in to the previous Ayreon works, especially since the vocals repeat binary in the background of this video, which recalls the pre-TTOE Ayreon universe (though, while Arjen tries to convince us that TTOE is a new story set apart from the old one, I'm sure it'll tie in SOMEHOW in the future - maybe the new album will tie them together? After all, Arjen's last solo album was tied in to the Ayreon story, so he seems to enjoy writing for it).

I'm sure this will turn out to be another impressive double-disc album with some talented vocalists and instrumentalists. In the 3-4 years since TTOE, there have been plenty of fresh, new musicians he can invite, and plenty of others he has yet to invite or hear from in years past, so I bet we'll be in for a treat (as always). If I have the funds at the time, I will totally pre-order this one!

My money was somehow on a new Star One *3*, but seeing as Floor Janssen is in a certain physical state, this would be my second bet.

In all seriousness, I think James sounds amazing here and I'm so glad that he is returning to Ayreon.

New singer to guess. I recognised the voice but couldn't say who, I checked the comments and since I rarerly listen to them I was completly clueless, thought it was some dutch pop singer  :lol Interesting voice though.
