Well if it was rated against all music in general, obviously I'd probably have to scale everything a bit higher, because there is always worse out there. But it's all subjective anyway, and at the end of the day it all comes down to whether I can stand to listen to them or not.

I don't know if this kind of survey is going to work, mostly because everyone on the board has a different standard that they're going by. 

For example, let's say blob and I both like TGP equally.  Yet while he may rank TGP a 10, I may rank it a 9, even though we view the song equally. 

This means that an average of all the ratings will not give an accurate measurement of how the board really feels.  You're going to get people that rank everything really high, and you're going to get people that rank everything really low.

There's a similar thread that bosk made, except instead of rating songs, we rank them. 

To get a true representation of how the board feels, here is what I suggest: we follow a ranking system.  We then average the place number for each song.  Then we create a master ranking list, from lowest score to highest score. 

The biggest problem I see with that, though, is that every song would have to be ranked.  Meaning, if a poster chose not to rank the nonalbum songs, it would mess up the placement of other songs.  My argument against that, however, would be that it would weed out the weaklings.  A true DT fan knows all the songs well enough to rank them.  We don't want to include the votes of loose fans that will leave DTF after a month or so.  Then they would no longer be a part of our community, and thus, the master ranking list would become incorrect.

Sorry if I am being too critical here; rating songs is a good idea; I just think that if we are looking for DTF's average opinion, it will be biased based on differing standards.

SilentFox, I see what you're saying, but I think that as long as we get enough people ranking the songs, it will average out fine. In a way, the average score out of 10 at the end will be an average of not only what score we give the song, but also the scale on which we score the songs. And most importantly, it should still give an accurate relative score of each song.
I don't think it will ultimately matter if a 7 on my scale is a 5 on someone else's scale, as long as we're both ranking the songs relative to each other, if that makes sense.
Although I will be interested to see the results of both methods and see how they compare.

I doubt we'll get all too many ties. Even though we're voting in increments of 0.5, the average scores at the end won't be (unless they get rounded off, but that's not necessary). At a glance, I definitely think this will be more accurate than a ranking system.

This forum has seen too much debate about this. A lot of us are pretty tired of talking about it. Most agree SDOIT is one song split into separate tracks for convenience only and AMBI is a suite, not one song.

Different people might rate by different criteria, but that's fine, people listen to music in different ways. Some enjoy it but are quite critical, others are obsessed with it and give lots of 10s (I'm somewhere nearer the latter I think). That's the point, we want to average out the ratings of all the users. Hope that makes sense.

Ranking DT songs by different criterion is definately the way forward, although I reckon this method will get more responses than having to rank all the songs in order, hence yield better results.

One issue with this method is that if some people list over 10 songs as 10/10, then theres no advantage gained by the very best of that bunch. Also, it still allows alot of negativity towards songs like scarred.

Another method is listing a top 20, say, in order and doing a points system. That would allow love/hate songs to perform better. This method works if people don't know all the songs too.

Absolutely this. The reason this thread works is that if someone doesn't know a song, they can not rate it and it doesn't impact on the rest. Whereas in the rankings, for it to be fair every song would need to be ranked, so if you want to include unreleased songs then you'd need everyone to include them, so people would rank them low simply because they haven't heard them, which as Splent pointed out in the survivor, isn't really fair.

Basing it on bosk's thread but removing the unreleased songs from people's lists would probably work reasonably well though.
