Lol, n00bishness ahead:

Bass: Squire by Fender Red J-Bass

Played through a: Fender 50-watt basic amp.  Something's up with it right now though.  Sounds like someone's farting beneath the notes unless I have all the knobs turned a certain way.

Effects: That would require having money to spend on such things.

Pick/Finger: Fingerstyle.

Dream bass?: 5-String Blue Ernie Ball Musicman Bongo

Bass player/idol: Geddy Lee

Other influences: Chris Wolstenholme, John Entwistle, Colin Edwin, Chris Squire, Mic Todd, and a few others.

I'm learning The Real Me right now by the Who and DAMN its tough.  Still can't get my head around most Rush stuff.  I can play The Pass, Manhattan Project, Red Barchetta, most of Cygnus X-1, and Limelight.

Post your gear/rig, talk about bass stuff, technique, etc

Main bass used: Ibanez, looks like a standard bass, my dad bought it for me at a pawn shop randomly

Played through a: I play through my computer with a BP200 effects processor. Works well with how I play

With these effects: I play around with a lot, but I find myself using a chorus or a distortion effect the most. The octave-fuzz is also good.

Pick or fingerstyle: Finger style, I used to play with a pick but I find the finger style to be more efficient, fun, and smooth.

What is your dream bass?: I play music first and foremost, so makes, models, and all that are very secondary to me, at least right now. I would say that I want to own a 6-string one day.

Favorite bass player/idol?: I'll say Geddy Lee, he really owns the bass.

Other bass influences: Anyone who makes the bass stand out in some form. I love that.

Main bass used: All I have right now is a '97 Fender Jazz Bass V, it works for pretty much everything, great tone/feel and sounds great through a lot of stuff.

Played through a: At this point a Fender M80, but that will be replaced soon hopefully ith some form of 4x10.

With these effects: Nothing right now, maybe add some things in the future, most likely just a distortion and envelope filter type thing.

Pick or fingerstyle: Finger of course

What is your dream bass?: Minus the one I have right now, a fretless Pastorius jazz bass.

Favorite bass player/idol?: Jaco Pastorius will probably always be my main influence on the instrument.

Other bass influences: Billy Sheehan, Bryan Beller, Les Claypool, John Entwistle, My teachers, Ryan Stasik, so many others I can't think of at the moment.

Main bass used: Tanglewood Six-String Rebel

Played through a: Outdated amplifier

With these effects: Not generally any.

Pick or fingerstyle: Fingerstyle

What is your dream bass?: I'm quite happy with what I've got now, but I think if I had one of John Myung's toilet lids I'd be as happy as a dog with two cocks. For now though I don't really need much more.

Favorite bass player/idol?: Colin Edwin is immensely groovey.

Other bass influences: Flea, Myung, Wooten.

Contrary to how it probably sounds, I'm pretty damn dedicated as a bassist, and have done a fair bit of stuff on the local circuit! I'm just really poor, hahaha, so I don't really look up models of basses, because I know damn well I can't hope to afford them. I've got a Tanglewood Six String and a Fender Jazz Fretless and they've both served me very well.

Main bass used:  G&L L-2000 Tribute, heavily DIY modded.

Played through a:  Ampeg BA-115

With these effects:  Line 6 Bass PodXT Live

Pick or fingerstyle: Fingerstyle, unless there is a reason to do otherwise

What is your dream bass?:  The combination of a Wal Mach II and a MM Stingray

Favorite bass player/idol?:  John Wetton

Other bass influences:  Geddy Lee, Charles Mingus, Colin Edwin, Geezer Butler

Weird thing is, anymore I feel more like my calling is to be a tinkerer in the electronics than actually playing the instrument.  I love playing, but I feel at my most creative when coming up with wiring configurations.

OK, my post requires a back story for complete understanding:

Circa my 12th or 13th birthday, my older cousin was moving out of my Aunt's house, and decided to give me his Bass Guitar, which he no longer played. It is a really old Arbor Bass Guitar that he had when he was about 13 or 14, and he had played in a band with it. When he gave it to me, it was missing the 'A' string, and the other three strings were obviously rusted into oblivion. My mother had it cleaned, up, polished and restrung. I received it and a new Crate MXB10 amp for my 12th or 13th Birthday. Me, being the noob I was, played only with a pick (because I wanted to be like a uber rock star guitarist) and basically only learned guitar parts, because I really wanted to play guitar. Later that year, Christmas rolls around, and I am given a Digitech BP200 multi effects pedal for my Bass.

About a year later (and learning almost nothing Bass wise because I was learning guitar parts and had no idea what I was doing) I finally broke a string (which in turn broke off the Nut between the headstock and fretboard) when I was trying to tune the first or second string to a higher note (being a noob). We bring it into Guitar Center, and they tell me it's going to cost over $100 dollars to fix. Seeing as it probably wasn't worth that we don't get it fixed.

At this point I want to learn Guitar, so for my next Birthday (Yes, I was pretty spoiled) I got a Guitar, amp, etc. and from that point up until about 13 days ago I've strictly been a Guitar player.

Fast forward Seven Years. It's 13 days ago and I decide I'm going to get my old Bass and amp and effects pedal out of the attic to play it. I forgot that the nut broke off, so I simply used my Mom's super strong nail glue to put it back on (lol). I go to the local Music store and buy Bass Strings, and to my surprise the Nut stayed! So now for almost two weeks I've been grooving away on my old Arbor Bass, having an awesome time, doing fingers tyles and messing around with the effects, learning real Bass lines, etc. I love it much more than Guitar when I first started playing, and I think I'm going to start saving up for a better Bass now.

Yea, so any suggestions for a cheap, but decent Bass (in the price range of about 300-500 ?)

Now that I've typed out that huge story no one cares about, here are my stats:

Main bass used: Really old Arbor beginner Bass (No model number or anything on it)

Played through a: Crate MXB10

With these effects: Digitech BP200 Multieffects Processor

Pick or fingerstyle: Fingerstyle, although I did try some picking too

What is your dream bass?: I don't know, I guess Myung's Bongo? haha

Favorite bass player/idol?: Tony Levin

Other bass influences: John Myung, Geddy Lee, Greg Lake, Stanley Clarke

With these effects: Chorus, Delay, Distortion

Favorite bass player/idol?: Ryan Martinie

Other bass influences: John Myung, Geddy Lee,

With these effects: None

Pick or fingerstyle: Fingers exclusively

Main bass used: A black Ibanez.

Played through a: A tiny Neville amp at home, don't know the gear in our rehearsal room.

Pick or fingerstyle: Pick, probably because I've played guitar with a pick for almost 18 years, and I prefer the sound a pick gives. I feel clumsy using a fingerstyle.

What is your dream bass?: Don't really have one, I'm not a gear interested guy - I just plug in and play  ;D

Favorite bass player/idol?: John Myung is pretty awesome.

Other bass influences: Chris Squire, John Entwistle, Steve Harris, Bruce Foxton.

How so?

Also, I would love to have an acoustic bass guitar. It'd be awesome.

agreed. Perhaps like Bryan Beller? He mainly uses his index and ring finger for plucking, its a funny story as well.

I pretty much hold my index and thumb as if there was a pick between them, and then I pluck the strings between them. But in some things I play I use the basic "walking" style. Its quite interesting, and the reason I play like it is because I've never had formal lessons and have pretty much taught myself everything. Certainly a handicap though.

Main bass used: Ibanez BTB1206E-NTF. I cannot find a picture of it on the internet anywhere. The model I have is slightly different and looks much better than the one in pictures on the internet, I believe it may have been discontinued

Played through a: Ah...and Ampeg 250W with some kind of Ampeg head, can't remember

With these effects: I sometimes use a little distortion, nothing too much though

Pick or fingerstyle: nothing but fingerstyle. I played guitar with a finger style before I learned bass and it was just a natural conversion

What is your dream bass?: I love John Myung's signature model from Score and Budokan, but with the plum/purple paint job. Also his signature from Scenes is pretty sweet. I would also love to have a six string acoustic bass, that would be sweet

Favorite bass player/idol?: John Myung.

Other bass influences: John Myung, Geddy Lee, John Myung  :tup

Realized I never filled this out

Main bass used: Ibanez SR506 (six string)

Played through a: Marshall MBC410 and MB450H Head (1650 Watts total :metal)

With these effects: BassBalls Envelope Filter

Pick or fingerstyle: Finger, of course.

What is your dream bass?: Either a EBMM Bongo 6 HH, or a Geddy Lee Jazz Signature :hefdaddy

Favorite bass player/idol?: Geddy Lee

Other bass influences: John Myung, Chris Squire

I have a Westone Spectrum GT (my goto bass) and an Alvarez 5string.  I play through no effects into a Hartke 3500 amp with a 410XL cab.  I can play both pick and fingerstyle, depending on style and speed... I don't have quite the finger speed to play very fast.  My dream bass is a Rickenbacker in fireglo.  And now to list format:

Favorite Bassist:  Geddy Lee
Other influences:  Cliff Burton, Kris Novoselic

I'm a self-taught amateur, but I'm getting a hell of a lot better recently.

Main bass used: Black Yamaha Four String (left handed)

Played through a: Yorkville Bassmaster x400 (used at an amazing price - it's my pride and joy)

With these effects:
None, but I use my friends pedal on occasion

Pick or fingerstyle:
Both

What is your dream bass?:
It's never going to happen, but Conklin GT7 7-string.
In reality though, any fiver or six stinger would be lovely, but I would love to have a JM bass

Favorite bass player/idol?: John Myung

Other bass influences:
Chris Wolsteholme (Muse), Geddy Lee (Rush)

Main bass used: Fender Jazz Bass, special series (made in Mexico)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMKj_4DtlQs
like the one here but with a white pickguard

Played through a: Peavey Basic 60

With these effects: none yet - I've never been in a band, just self-taught and play for fun (band someday!!)

Pick or fingerstyle: fingerstyle

What is your dream bass?: a Rickenbacker like Geddy Lee's but with a natural finish, like McCartney's in the 1970's.

Favorite bass player/idol?: Geddy Lee

Other bass influences: John Entwhistle, John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney
