The return of the 'Evening With' format
« on: October 08, 2009, 12:32:53 PM »
The only reason I ask is a BIG part of the reason why I did not go to the concert this last leg is because I don't want to be shelling out fifty bucks for a ticket to see a concert where I'm only interested in seeing the last band.  The last Prog Nation tour I really did not like the opening bands very much... I thought redemption was OK, 3 was eh, and I did not like Between the Buried and Me at all.  I was thinking about going this past Progressive Nation tour but once the bands changed had no desire to.  When I pay a lot of money for a ticket I want to get my money's worth.  Every time I've seen the opening bands I've been turned off because 2 of them I dont' like and 1 I haven't heard enough of yet.

I'd rather shell out $75 to listen to 3 hours of DT than to shell out $50 and hear 90 minutes of DT and not pay attention to the 3 opening bands if I don't like them.  I hope that the opening bands spark my interest so I can go hear DT, but because I'm not going to any concerts, I'm finding I'm not nearly as into DT as I was 2 years ago.

They need to either stick with the Evening With... format (which they can't do for a long period) or have one opening band and then 2.5 hours of DT. I would be satisified with both but i didn't go this year to NA PN09 due to the fact i had no interest to see any of the other bands except DT.

I vote for a RCMH-like every year, where fans from all over can come for one special, long show (or maybe a few around the country/world) so they don't get wore out but fans can get the evening with

They will.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Well, if over here in America, if they have just Pain of Salvation play for an hour or (hopefully less) so... then DT can do 2.5 hours. Which most bands do nowadays

They are opening for the Australia Headlining Tour so i really doubt they will tour with DT in the U.S. since MP doesn't repeat himself (and thank God).

Well, I don't know how far in the future we're talking, but it makes me happy in any case!

I have to say, Progressive Nation has been a great experience, the first one I could have done without BTBAM (mainly because they aren't PROG), but they have been well organized, well executed festivals. It sucks only having 90 minutes of DT, but I honestly had a fantastic time at all three of the shows I went to this past tour, not only were the first two bands cool, but I had a great time hanging out with Scale the Summit, and meeting the guys from Bigelf. By the third show some of the Scale the Summit guys were saying, "You again!".

So yeah, I'd like more DT, but Progressive Nation has been a success thus far in my book.

I really hope so. If they ever do a "last ever concert" it better be an Evening With.

I would be happy with this, except replace PoS with Riverside (1hr set). I know they opened for DT in '07 in Europe. But, have they ever toured the States?

I've seen 2 PN concerts , definetly ready for a headlining set or evening with. 90 minutes is just not enough.

Sorry RMV, but you are WAY off. The whole "MP doesn't repeat himself" ONLY applies regarding the various territories - it's the reason why Opeth is on the European bill this year, and was on the North American bill last year. In other words, there's still a very good chance PoS could open for DT next spring in North America, even tho they're already opening for them in Oz. Sorry to burst your bubble.

That said, I agree with robbob - as much as I used to love PoS, I'll take Riverside over them (and everyone else) as DT's opener any day.

Although I prefer Riverside to Pain of Salvation, I saw Riverside's only non-festival gig in North America, and I've never seen PoS, so I'd like to see them.

If we're talking about who we'd like to open for DT, I'd like Symphony X or a band like Sonata Arctica/Stratovarius.

Symphony X has done America with DT, so it won't happen. And knowing the type of music MP is trying to promote I can give a 99% sure guess that Sonata/Strat won't be going on tour with DT.

No, Scale the Summit and Bigelf came out to the merch booth between sets at every show.

Bigelf were great. The only two horrid opening acts in recent years have been Into Eternity and BtBaM.

Damn. As much as I love Colors, I've heard nothing but bad things about BtBaM's live shows. Even from people who like that kind of music.

Pain of Salvation (they could co-headline as far as I'm concerned, but their fanbase in the states is so puny)
Redemption
Cynic
Alter Bridge
Muse
Iron Maiden (maybe in a few years, they'll be able to coheadline!)
dredg (weird but why not?)
Blind Guardian

3 opening acts are too much. I got to know that in the USA, it's quite normal to have so many opening acts - but why?
Having seen DT first in 1993 and then 12 times on all the tours (except on the Octavarium tour, because I did not like the ToT tour at all...), I have to say that 3 hours of DT is too much for me now. They always had great opening acts (though I don't remember the first ones very well or not at all - but that's because of my bad memory and the number of concerts I saw), so I'd prefer them with 1 opening act.

Three opening acts is total suckage. Symphony X only played for about an hour and ten minutes because of three absolutely horrendous opening bands. I paid for Symphony X, not Metallica/Pantera wannabes

Symphony X did not play that short because of opening acts. Yeah, I hate when bands tour the US and have a ton of opening acts, because they are normally shitty local openers, however everything would have been planned over when Symphony X was to go on in order to finish their set in time. I've seen SX 5 or 6 times now, and they've been great every time, but one thing they do not do is play a long show.
