Note that I never said that, either.  The Beatles were a British band.  The song spent four weeks at #1 on every major British chart (whatever that means).  Are you saying it didn't really count as a #1 because it didn't hit #1 in the U.S.?

No, but you're American, aren't you?  And the post I was responding to was one in which you implied that it was no. 1 in America.

Bump.

Drawing from some recent discussion of the Beatles' albums in the P/S forum, I've begun a full-on Beatles Survivor!  We're starting with the first two albums and going all the way to the end, with a separate survivor for all non-album tracks (quite a few of those).

I want to run this survivor even if some of the early albums don't get too many votes each round.  If you are a Beatles listener, please take some time to stop by and vote in the polls.  We need as many votes as possible!!

The Letter M

I'm not sure HOW I ever missed this thread! Geez

To sirbradford - Awesome! I look forward to this survivor. Will you be including Magical Mystery Tour (The now official release, as the US LP)? And will you be including Yellow Submarine (the official UK LP)?

Also... any chance to include Let It Be...Naked? Am I the only one here that prefers that over the original Let It Be? 9-times-to-1 I'll listen to the "Naked" version more than the original. It just sounds more like the Beatles to me, and the song choices are better, IMO.

And considering the number of songs in the Beatles catalog, it'll take QUITE a long time to do a full on survivor...but I look forward to re-visiting every album along the way!

-Marc.

sirbradford117

All of the Beatles' songs (originals and covers) will be included.  The 4 tracks from Yellow Submarine will be included.  Not sure about Anthology tracks yet... including "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" would make me think about adding unreleased tracks like "Leave My Kitten Alone," "If You've Got Trouble" and "12-bar Original."  Maybe I'll have a completely separate Anthology survivor when the regular rounds are over.

sirbradford117

Also, not doing "Let it Be... Naked" in favor of the original album.  It would involve skipping over "Maggie Mae" and "Dig It" just to include "Don't Let Me Down" and some alternate takes.

Well I wasn't suggestion in FAVOR of the original but more so in ADDITION to the original. I know it would seem a bit redundant, but I think you might get different results. Just an idea!

I high suggest getting all three. There's some great rarities and alternate takes. One of my favorites is "Something" off Anthology 3. But there's really so much more revealed and released on these 6 discs. Great stuff!

-Marc.

sirbradford117

The Anthology discs are pretty solid.  The vast majority of that material, however, was widely available on bootlegs before their official release in 1994/1995.  Sound quality is obviously superior here, but lots of things were edited and/or rearranged for Anthology.

King Postwhore

Another forum is talking about the best Beatles covers.  I like Styx--I Am The Walrus and Cheap Trick doing Day Tripper.

So, I'm listening to Abbey Road right now. Why in the fuck did I not listen to this band sooner?

Nope. They suck. It's not just a clever name.

skydivingninja

So they're like Eagles of Death Metal, but worse?

:omg:

Welcome to the wonderful world of the best band ever.  Let us know about your progress on the journey!

But the Rush thread is that way!

:neverusethis:

UMH: you picked a good place to start.  Abbey Road is my favorite.  Go for Sgt. Pepper next.

Ultimetalhead

I'll probably listen to Sgt. Pepper tomorrow.

Super Dude

I'm in my Global Pop Music class right now and we're learning about Indian music. Before class begins we're allowed to share some music we like that shares in the musical tradition in question. Someone just played Within You Without You. :hat

That's the genius of it.  It's not just Beatles songs redone as metal, or vice versa.  It's actual mashing up of their music, lyrics, and styles in a way that honors both and makes it seem like it was meant to be.

Discovered Let It Be on YouTube, priceless/cute moment when Paul brings his adopted daughter Heather to the studio:

Cute until she gets a hold of a microphone and babbles into it for HOURS.  Listen to some bootlegs of that day's sessions if you dare...

Birch Boy

Here are Ozzy Osbourne's top ten Beatles songs (without the commentary) from the new Rolling Stone magazine:

1. "She Loves You"
2. "I Want To Hold Your Hand"
3. "I Am The Walrus"
4. "A Day In The Life"
5. "Hey Jude"
6. "Help!"
7. "Eleanor Rigby"
8. "Something"
9. "Strawberry Fields Forever"
10. "The Long And Winding Road"

Mladen

He picked some amazing songs there, along with my very favorite, I am the walrus.

Rina

I Am the Walrus...  I have so much love for that song...  :heart

Also, A Day in the Life.

Super Dude

Is the White Album underrated?  I love at least half of the tracks on the album (validating my oft-espoused argument that it should've been only one disc), yet all I hear is people trashing it, at least in the Beatles circles I run in.

skydivingninja

I guess?  It's got a lot of great songs, but plenty of others songs I don't really care for.

Scard

I've always thought it gets more praise than it deserves. Sure it's amazing, but I've heard a lot of people claiming it's their best, which it isn't.

Yeah, it's definitely a great album, but it's not their best work.
