That's one hell of a song, very catchy, great chorus. Rock in a hard place is a very underrated album, one of my favorites actually.

Oh shit! I linked the wrong clip.
I had just posted that in the Bitches Brew thread. I'll post the correct one when I get home.

And yes M, that is a very underrated album BTW.

Great version.  I especially like the tempo.  Nicko has a tendancy of rushing through songs, but this groove and pace is absolutely perfect.

I love how minimalist Nicko is in regards to his kick.  If this were a metal song written today it'd no doubt be littered with double kick lines, following the opening triplet riff to a T.

Now that I think about it, I love that Maiden are a band where the rhythm section (Drums and Bass) actually work together to form the backbone of a song.  Listen to how Steve's clicky rhythm complement the drums, almost sounding like an extension of Nicko's kit, rhythmically... its a thing of beauty.

Most metal bands post-Maiden were all about how the Drums and Guitars worked together to create rhythm.   Metallica especially, there were hardly any audible bass parts in their earlier stuff.  As much as they go on about how great Cliff was (which he was) its kind of ironic that you can hardly hear him.

Man, live versions of The Fallen Angel are awesome.  No idea why they didn't add that to the BNW setlist.

Yeah, I was impressed with that too.  I watched the version from Ullevi after that one and was disappointed that Janick once again got Adrian's solo.  I like Janick, I just don't like the fact that he takes most of his solo spots.

Well, it's Stratton's solo actually, and that's why it was a surprise for me to see Adrian completely nailing it. Janick does a fine job with that solo as well, though, at least he did two years ago when I saw Maiden.

Jannick actually did a good job with it.

Love the intro by Bruce on the Ullevi version. I need a DVD of that show!

I know it's Stratton's solo, but Adrian played it and really owned it through the 80's.  Stratton was a good guitarist.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing, seems like a really good show.  Especially if all the songs are that tight.

What do you guys think about the new compilation? I'm not too happy with the song choices TBH. I mean, why Tailgunner and Holy Smoke, and Man on the Edge? I would rather something like NPFTD, The Educated Fool, and Dream of Mirrors. Still, its decent overall.

It's a greatest hits. There's absolutely no chance the song selection will please everyone. Hell, greatest hits don't please anyone. Every single person is going to find little things about the song selections to nitpick. You might as well make your own playlist tailored to your personal preference.

Also, I find this greatest hits rather mystifying, the fact that it exists at all. It covers material that (for the most part) only hardcore fans are familiar with to begin with. The people that would buy this compilation are likely to already own the respective albums. Unlike a greatest hits covering their golden era, which I can see a casual fan picking up and making some use out of.

Maybe that's why they're release this? To get more people into a less popular era for Maiden?

That's my point, though. I can't really see a casual fan caring enough to try to get into a less popular era.

Yeha, I don't get it either.  Not a bad selection, but heaps of songs I would switch.  I will buy it of course.  I'm not impressed how Blaze has been ommited, and replaced with sub par live versions from Bruce.

Just another indication that this collection is targeted at casual listeners. having two different singers might throw someone not as familiar with Maiden off.

Sub Par? Are you kidding? The live version brought life to the songs and the addition of Bruce makes it all the better. This actually isn't a bad comp with the exception of No More Lies. Those two live Blaze era songs are the best songs on this thing... Oh, and Holy Smoke.

Listened to Seventh Son on the way home from uni today. I quite like it, when I have the time, to listen to a full album from start to finish instead of just picking out songs that I feel like listening to at the time. Listening to Killers right now, mainly for the survivor. Its probably my least well known album, and I must say its one of my worst.

The good news about this news is that Rod slipped in a comment about a couple South American shows being filmed for a DVD release later this year. I'm pumped for it since I won't be able to go to Florida to see them on this tour.

Didn’t realize there was a new compilation coming out. * Looks up on wiki. Hmm… not a bad compilation, but not sure who it is designed for. Maybe a fan who lost interest around the Bruce/Blaze change and never came back? Otherwise I don’t understand why people who own studio albums buy compilations, unless they have the money and time to be ‘completists.’

As far as compilations go, I could count on one hand the number I’ve owned over the years, but bought this compilation to check out more Maiden, since I only knew a couple hits. After a few listens, I knew this wasn’t going to cut it, so I started getting the studio albums. 5+ years later I own all the albums, a DVD, and have seen them live twice.

I think that’s the only time I’ve become a big fan and follower of a band based off of one compilation album.

The setlist for the new collection was a bit 'meh' IMO.
El Dorado is one of my least favorites on Final Frontier, the second half of that album has the really good songs.
Then there are some other personal favorites I miss, like The Legacy (which is probably my favorite Maiden-song), Ghost of the Navigator, The Nomad (never seen much love for this one sadly) and finally Starblind and Isle of Avalon. :P
