I imagine that SSoaSS was influential to most Prog Metal bands that came after that.

Well DT was "formed" in '85 and SSoaSS was in '88.... so I don't know about that.

Seventh Son (song) is easily the most overrated part of that album. Alright at best, but it's not nearly as bad as the failure that is Can I Play With Madness.

I'm not sure we're listening to the same album. CIPWM? is a bit poppish, but still a great song to rock out to and somewhat catchy in its own right. The title track is nothing short of epic. Moonchild/Infinite Dreams is the best two-song opener to an album. Ever. Period. I've yet to hear two songs open up an album better than that.

Just when talking Maiden you have Ides/Wrathchild, Where Eagles Dare/Revelations, Somewhere in Time/Wasted Years, The Wicker Man/Ghost of the Navigator, and Wildest Dreams/Rainmaker.

Just when talking Maiden you have Ides/Wrathchild, Where Eagles Dare/Revelations, Somewhere in Time/Wasted Years, The Wicker Man/Ghost of the Navigator, and Wildest Dreams/Rainmaker.
1. Ides is a decent interlude and while I LOVE Wrathchild, it still isn't as epic as Moonchild/Infinite Dreams.
2. Both great songs, but still not as good.
3. Wasted Years is a horrible song that I cringe every time I hear it.
4. Both amazing songs, probably the closest thing to comparing with it outside of Aces High/2MTM
5. Both good songs, but nowhere near as epic.

I don't see how anyone can rate anything off Seventh Son as average. That makes me sad.

That may be, but Seventh Son is not really progressive and certainly not their best album!

3. Wasted Years is a horrible song that I cringe every time I hear it.

I don't think I'm the one off the deep end anymore!

4. Both amazing songs, probably the closest thing to comparing with it outside of Aces High/2MTM

Forgot about that one, also better!

Bruce's vocals in the whole song irritate me to no end. I hate the production on Somewhere in Time so that doesn't help things. The chorus is incredibly annoying and the solo is really boring. Need I go on?

Aces High/2MTM is also one of my favorite opening 1-2 punch combos ever, but Moonchild/Infinite Dreams is still my favorite.

I liked how during the Somewhere Back in Time tour, they actually pulled out the acoustic guitar and played the intro instead of just playing the intro over the pa when they originally toured SSOASS.

I've gone back and listened to pretty much the entire discography since the MSG show last week.

I tried to focus especially on my lower-end albums, since they don't get as many listens as the top few.

New rankings:

1.   Powerslave
2.   Somewhere in Time
3.   Piece of Mind
4.   The Number of the Beast
5.   Brave New World
6.   Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
7.   Iron Maiden
8.   A Matter of Life and Death
9.   Dance of Death
10.   The X Factor
11.   Killers
12.   Fear of the Dark
13.   No Prayer for the Dying
14.   Virtual XI

Biggest jump is The X-Factor, which since it has been about a year or two since I gave it a full listen, is much better than I remember it being back then.

The title track and Wrathchild are amazing. After that, its a lot of songs that are pretty good, but nothing mind-blowing.

I'm actually agreeing with you on this, but the opening combo on SSoaSS is also pretty killer, the rest of the album just falls short.  Also agreed that Seventh Son is incredibly overrated and CiPWM is failure.

And both DTisMajesty and Seventh Son are wrong: "Powerslave" is their best song.  "Paschendale" is second best.

The song Powerslave is amazing, but it wouldn't crack my top ten. Probably just barely though. And the title track SS if far from overrated imo. It is just pure epicness. The solo towards the end blows my mind every time I hear it.

Reading through these thoughts on this page regarding 7th Son....

I love this album. A lot of people call it their most progressive album..but I don't think it's all that progressive by itself. The most you could say is that it's made by a band that had progressive influences, and that is still why, to me, Iron Maiden was truly separated from the rest of the pack, including Judas Priest.

The title track...I actually wasn't nuts over when this album was released, but I have found that it has aged very well.

And the one-two punch of Moonchild/Infinite Dreams is indeed awesome. If I have one complaint about 2000's era Maiden, it's that their album openers have been pretty weak. This was something that they mastered back in the day.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Maiden have awesome openers and they also have awesome closers too. Some of my favorite songs by them are their closers too.

Iron Maiden, Hallowed Be Thy Name, To Tame a Land (Very underrated song), Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Alexander the Great, Only the Good Die Young (I love this song, I don't care what the haters say. The reprise from Moonchild is amazing), Fear of the Dark, Journeyman, and The Legacy are pretty freaking sweet songs to close an album out to.

I can't wait for the new album, sounds like its gonna be really solid.

The Wicker Man/Ghost of the Navigator and Wildest Dreams/Rainmaker would like to have a word with you, even though you think Wildest Dreams sucks.

Well, I really like Ghost and Rainmaker. But it's the songs they'd be coupled with is the problem. Wildest Dreams isn't that good, and I think The Wicker Man is way overrated. I mean, it's good once it heats up in the second half of the song, but I don't care for the chorus.

The Wicker Man is really great live (what Maiden song isn't?) but it's kind of meh on the album.

Its amazing in the studio, and perfect live (Just listen to the RiR version for proof!)

Also, I've come to realize how criminally underrated Phantom of the Opera is. That solo gives me chills listening to it right now.

Edit: I think this just may be the world's first Prog Metal song, as controversial as that opinion may be.
