Was at that show too! It was fun. Though the setlist could have been a bit better. Only playing the first parts of SLS, Egoist Hedonist and Saturate Me was such a tease! And closing with River Down Below was a bit underwhelming.

Too much to play for the first full tour of the States.  Hopefully it will continue to hear different songs from their catalog.   I was fine with the setlist.   I was just enthralled seeing them finally.

Tonight is the Seattle show.   And I gotta say, that I'm having a tough time getting in the mood.

I'm almost 50, and a trip into one of the most rotten areas of Seattle, to see a tour promoting my least favorite album on a Sunday when I have to wake up at 4:30 tomorrow morning to go to work, is dampening my spirits a bit.  If I hadn't already bought a ticket, I'd be tempted to just bag it.

But on the plus side, Riverside IS one of my favorite bands, they are coming to Seattle for the first time ever, and I'm heading down early to hang out a bit with Sean Thompson of Odd Logic....kick back a couple of beers, eat some pizza, talk prog, get some progress on the new Odd Logic album.    So there will definitely be some good times.   But by the time the show is over, I'm going to be an old man looking for a bed.

I saw a couple shows on this tour, and I thought they were incredible.  A lot of energy between the band and fans.  Hopefully you'll find that being a little tired tomorrow was worth it. :)

I'm happy we don't do audio interviews, because I also prefer the text format, and nobody would want to hear me mumbling anyway :D

Dig the interview, thanks for sharing! Also haven't been active much here so didn't get to post about how awesome the Boulder show was! I definitely could have stayed there all night and it felt too damn short. Really glad I've gotten more into these guys in the last year or so.
Speaking of my relatively newfound interest in Riverside, just last night my bf and I were watching Six Feet Under (his first time watching the series, my... 5th or 6th?) and realized that the lyrics at the end of 02 Panic Room are basically lifted from a little monologue in SFU. The whole "self-portrait" thing. Not word for word but too close to be coincidence, and sure enough Alan Ball (the writer/creator of the show) is thanked in the Mariusz section of the liner notes of Rapid Eye Movement (...maybe DT needs to have the same etiquette, for those who remember my SDOIT discovery 😂)! But yeah, you should have seen our faces as we kept rewinding and replaying it, and then I immediately had to check the CD.

Basically that JP took a good amount of very specific language from case studies in a psychology book for the title track (mainly About to Crash and Solitary Shell, little bit of Losing Time) without giving credit to the author. Don't wanna derail this thread because it was a huge source of debate/drama here in 2011 or so but PM me if you want more info!

That sounds great, they did the same with the Love, Fear and the Time Machine. This should sound great and can't wait to hear the acoustic versions.

Thanks for checking it out! I wasn't aware of the Six Feet Under thing as I've never watched the series, but I'll definitely have to ask about that if/when I get to interview him again :D (I remember the SDOIT thread btw!)

I was supposed to review Wasteland when it came out, but due to personal reasons I didn't manage to finish it until a while ago, just in time for the release of the special edition: https://www.musicalypse.net/2018-riverside-wasteland-english/

Nice review mate, I think the last paragraph sums up Wasteland perfectly for me.
That said I am hoping the surround sound version opens up the album a bit more for me.

I was really disappointed in Wasteland when it first came out.   But I was blown away at how much I loved those songs when I saw the band live.   Totally breathed new life into the material.   I like the album MUCH more now.   Not sure I've ever had that drastic of a change of heart on an album just from seeing the material live before.

Still a mid-tier Riverside album, but it's no longer a disappointment.

Actually something similar happened to me when I saw songs from QR's HitNF album performed live next to their older material. Prior to seeing them on that tour, I HATED HitNF, but after those shows (saw them in WI and IL), I had some appreciation for the album.

In the case of Riverside, I do think it helps that they are not afraid to change things up live with their songs. I haven't sat down to compare how the live renditions are next to the studio originals, but I'm sure there's at least a few changes that might make a difference.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I totally get that. In my opinion, the main problem with that album is the sound. There's some great material on that album; my favourites are Acid Rain and the title track. But whenever I listen to the album I keep asking myself: what's with that cardboard box drum set? And turn up the goddamn distortion on that guitar!!!!!  >:(

They had that figured out on Anno Domini HD. That album had a great sound, and just the right amount of heaviness.

Thanks! I don't have a surround sound system myself, so I don't have the luxury of being able to try that :P But as you guys said, the songs sound so much better live without the dry production.

Not really surprising, but Riverside has an official new member.

http://bravewords.com/news/riverside-announce-lineup-change

“Riverside are a quartet again!

“Dear friends, this is an incredibly important moment in the history of our band. From the beginning of February 2020, Riverside are officially not a trio any more, we are a quartet! It is with incredible joy that we would like to announce that the fourth official member of the band is...

“Well, you can't have expected anyone else? :)

“He's been with us for over three years. He let us recover from the tragic loss we have all experienced, he helped us survive and become, from year to year, a better and better live band. He has been our friend and our brother. We are welcoming him in our midst with great joy, in which we hope you will also share!

“Ladies and gentlemen, on the guitars in Riverside: Maciej Meller!

“Being a good guitarist and loving music is one thing, but being able to fit in with your personality, incredible modesty and humility, that's an incredibly important thing in our band. Maciej meets all the criteria and we are truly happy that he wants to continue our journey with us.

“We still remember. And we still go back to the moment when, after we lost Piotr, in 2016, the massive amount of your support made us continue as Riverside. We were not ready to invite anyone to our family at that time. Wasteland had to be recorded as a trio. We simply had to cope with the loss on our own.

“Now, it's high time for Riverside to have a guitarist in the line-up again, not only during live shows but also in the studio, when working on new material. So we are really pleased to let you know that after coming back from the final, spring edition of the Wasteland Tour 2020, together with Maciek, in the new line-up, we will start working on the eighth album.

“The upcoming spring concerts will have a different character, a different tone, and Riverside will sound mightier than ever before. We would really like to see you there!

“Last but not least - Piotr Grudziński will always be in our hearts, we all still love him and we will never forget him. But we have to move on. We are on a journey, they are waiting for us. There is more to create in this life, more to see, more to know, more to save. We hope that you will decide to stay with us again and that you will let us help one another through all of this.

“We are here with you and for you.”
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

They probably said that to relieve themselves of the short-term pressure to find someone before they were ready to. Like many things, they either mellow over time or realise the impracticality of not having that thing, in this case a specialist guitarist. It's almost impossible for a prog metal band to not have a specialist performing the instrument that metal (and rock as a whole) is defined by.

I liked him in Quidam and he did his job perfectly when I saw them live last year and he looks like a nice, positive guy, so I'm glad they didn't stick with Mariusz Duda on guitars and brought him as a full-time member.
