Ben Folds Appreciation Thread
« on: September 29, 2009, 01:34:34 AM »
One of my favorite current songwriters has to be Ben Folds.  The man has some hilarious lyrics and is also one of the best piano players around.  I got a chance to see him live on Saturday without his backing band and it was a phenomenal show, despite the annoyingly drunk crowd who shouted for "Brick", "Hiroshima" and "Bitches Ain't Shit" constantly and the shitty acoustics of the venue he still managed to create a memorable experience having the whole crowd singing along to every word by the end of the show.

Ben Folds Five's Whatever and Ever Amen and Ben Fold's Rockin' the Suburbs are my favorite albums of his.

College students unite and appreciate this amazing comedic singer/songwriter/pianist.

Whatever and Ever Amen is an album I can play over and over again.  I have a DVD from a PBS show they did and it's Killer.  I wished I saw them live before Ben went solo.

My favorite album to this day is Reinhold Messner. It was the album I listened to incessantly while writing together my Master's Thesis. The melancholy on that album is so bitter-sweet, I just love it.

Love Ben Folds, and yes I discovered him early in my college days which seems to be the trend. Haven't seem him live, but I'd be really interested in hearing how some of the songs on Way to Normal translated.

Whatever & Ever, Reinhold Messner and Rockin' The Suburbs are all perfect albums from start to finish, zipping effortlessly from funlovin' rockin' to heartfelt bittersweetness and back again. Love 'em.

His other stuff has its moments, but those three albums are where it's at.

Nope, there was no balcony.  The concert was in a small college gym.

He didn't play much off Way to Normal.  All I can remember is Effington, Free Coffee and You Don't Know Me (which he played as a duet with the female lead singer of the opening band replacing Regina Spektor's part).  However when I saw him at Lollapalooza in August with his whole band he played Hiroshima, Dr. Yang and Bitch Went Nutz (the alternate version from the fake leak of the album which I like much better than the real version).

They all sounded amazing live.

I've had Whatever and Ever since 1998.  My piano teacher for years used to be in a band with him, which is how I learned about him.  Pretty good stuff, I haven't listened to anything of his in a while.  I should.

I couldn't remember the really cool pile of zombies emotacon.

I recently re-acquired my Ben Folds collection.  Had the BFF when I was in college, and Brick was the first song I learned how to play that wasn't and old standard.

I tell you there is nothing more fun than singing the chorus and drumming to "Song for the Dumped" out loud and not realize your 71 year old boss is 4 feet away  :lol

For whatever reason I read this as the "Ben Frost appreciation thread" and came in like "wooo yeah this is my thread!"

Then I was disappointed.

Shame on you.  Look online for Ben Flods Five on Session at West 54th.  I'd think you'd love that dvd.  I know some are on youtube.

Am I the only one who's got all of the Five albums (love them back in high school), but hasn't heard anything without the Five?

Saw him live about 6 years ago, in a trio format that was NOT the "Five."  Good stuff.

Sidenote... it was the loudest concert I've ever been to.  Holy cow, when he started pounding on his piano keys the PA was deafening.
