The Letter M

Gotta say, this one has been the immediate stand-out track for me on Parasomnia. This is probably their best "ballad" type track, if not ever, then certainly from the back half of their career.

This is one song from the new album I hope they play live, it definitely deserves it, and I'd love to hear more of the guitar solo at the end with a proper ending.

BTC has also been the only song that I've hummed/sang along to in the chorus, so there's that at least. Just love how James' (and the backing) vocals sound on this one in particular.

The most interesting and surprising fact of this song is that it clicked almost instantly at first listen. What a beautiful and powerful ballad.
I feel like the last song that clicked with the fans so quickly was The Count of Tuscany, and then there goes this song.

The solo is one of the best JP has composed on the last 5 albums.

I really hope they play this live, although I've seen them on this tour, but at least they should record a live rendition in the near future.

Zydar

After 2-3 playthroughs this one is the standout of the songs I hadn't yet heard (meaning the singles). It has a good and catchy chorus that's made for audience singalong.

I can't really comment on the JP solo since I'm not really interested in solos in general.

Listening to DT while not being interested in solos seems like a form of self-harm.

Mentioned it in the album thread- this is the best song they've put out since "Breaking All Illusions". I can't quite put my finger on it but it has some of that 90s mojo that I've been missing for a long time. Sounds almost like Petrucci dusted off the ole Ibanez for this one. Standout lyrics by LaBrie too.

If only the rest of the album was of the same quality...

Not really. I'm always interested in the actual song itself, not individual solos or instrumental sections. That's never been the reason why I listen to DT.

I hear you- it's like subscribing to Playboy for the articles.  ;)

I kid, I kid...just being facetious.

Awaken

Love everything about this one.  To my ears it's one of the best 'singles' they've ever written.  The intro immediately piqued my interest as it sounded like nothing I'd expect from them.  The way the song unfolds is just flawless - JLB is perfect here.

lucasembarbosa

The ending solo is the perfect mixing of High Hopes and TBoT - as stated by other folks in the album thread, it's a pitty it ends too soon!

cminor

So far it's my favorite on the album. The chorus reminds me a lot of Out of Reach in terms of the harmony (which is a good thing!).
Did anyone notice that the intro has the exact same harmony as the guitar solo in The Alien (same chords, same key)? Coincidence or is there more to it?

CraftyCaleb2483

Interesting tone used by JP in the intro, I would never have expected him to use something like that but man it's awesome!

Great track, as I mentioned in the main thread, the part at 1:30 when the guitar riff starts along with the hi-hat pattern, sounds like something from Operation Mindcrime. It has that vibe.

The chorus of this track is really catchy and I really love the piano parts.
Devour Feculence!

Northern Lion

This is an amazing song!  I am very surprised it wasn't chosen as a single.

genome

Incredible track... infuriating fadeout!

Logain Ablar

This track is pure gold! I absolutely love it.

I do like the ending solo, and one of the things I appreciate most is that it's a total shift from the rest of the song. By that, I mean, he's not soloing over the chords of the chorus, as you might expect for a big fade-out solo. The ending is its own thing, there's barely a chord change, but somehow it fits with what went before.

I kinda wish the first part of the song went on a little longer though! Some great melodies in there.

Yeah same here. I too "don't care" for solos, I don't mean I skip them or sit bored through them, they are never what I look for in a song. If there's a solo I like, all for the better, I enjoy that even more. If there's a solo I don't care for in a song I like, I still like the song. And a song I just don't like won't be saved by a great solo.

Northern Lion

When I first heard that intro guitar riff, I thought "oh, I think this is going to be something special".  And the fade out doesn't bother me at all, in fact I think it works very well for the song.

Madman Shepherd

I love the song so much I'm entering nitpicky territory about what is keeping it from being flawless. Like did they really need to fade out then instead of letting it go on longer? Did they need to do a fadeout at all?

gzarruk

This was the best surprise in the album to me, what a great song. I never have the ballads as one of my favorite tracks from any DT albums, but here it is :hefdaddy

illusionist

I still haven't listened to the album, nor the song yet.
But i have read the reviews for both.
How do you compare the solo of BTC to that of TBOT? Both are long, close the songs and are melodic and a highlight of their albums.
Which one do you prefer?

Polarbear

Loved this song immediately after I heard it!! :tup

RoeDent

It's technically not a full fade-out to silence; it's a segue cos it fades into the cricket sounds on TSMI. They could've pulled the "song becomes the radio" trick to make the segue better.

NoFred

On first listen this song unapologetically made me feel like I was listening to them 30 years ago... 10/10 on that experience alone.

It's triumphant (despite the lyrical content) and not saccharine or melancholy like many of their ballads have been. What an awesome surprise since I had kind of written these things off as just moody songs written so there could be a solo (still, this solo doesn't disappoint!)

PMSummer

Maybe it's Freudian but I keep missing the 'L' in the title when I read it.

I can't think of the last time JP has just gone for subtle overdrive rather than full clean or full distortion.

I wouldn't have made that connection, but you having pointed it out, I can see it.

I think this is going to be a live highlight on the proper Parasomnia tour when they play the whole album.  And we can hear the actual ending!   (but I don't mind the fadeout on the album version; it's fitting)

I'd imagine way back for the solo in Lines In The Sand

This song should have been at least 20+min longer.  :'(

brakkum

Isn't hitting me as hard as it is everyone else (yet), but the first note of that solo is SO Gilmour, can't wait to see that live.

Is this a confirmed thing that after the 40th anniversary tour, they'll do a dedicated Parasomnia tour playing the whole album ?

I believe I heard the same thing.  It's a shame, because I'm not going to be able to attend one of their shows this time around.  I'm sure I will regret it.

I'm almost positive I heard that in interviews, more than once.  And JP didn't look at me like I was crazy when I mentioned to him that I was looking forward to the next leg of the tour for that reason just as much as I was looking forward to Octavarium on this leg.  So I take that as a soft confirmation of sorts.

Confirmed? Not exactly but it is strongly suggested by the band that they want to do it.

My favourite part of this song is actually the tiny bridge section at 3:52 to 4:12  :lol

Genesis chords!
