There's certainly a ton of [insert physical attribute here]-isms in our society, and yes, if it's something that resonates with you, it can definitely sting (even if everyone here is just 'Bustin Ballz,' when it's physical, it can feel way more visceral.

I've been super guilty of fat-shaming in the past, largely as a result of me projecting my own insecurities onto others (a formerly 'chubby' kid who has unhealthily worked like hell to stay 10% bf throughout adulthood).

Height, weight, and (this one is me) hair, they are almost always out of our control (maybe weight is to a lesser extent, but still), and I think, as a species, our instinct is still to make immediate and subconscious assessments of others based on what we see.

So, I hear everyone who has an issue with some of the comments flying around here.

It's easy to say, 'get over it...no big deal...we're just teasing...' – I've been guilty of using those phrases myself. But I have been (and will continue) to be more thoughtful and deliberate with my words.

Quote from: nobloodyname on October 16, 2024, 08:48:51 AMIt's really quite something how society is still okay with being heightist. Some of the things that have been said in this thread... imagine if those remarks had been made about so-called protected characteristics.

On the plus side, at least I don't have to dust the tops of cupboards.

I had two thoughts when I read so many comments about height in this thread:

1 - Why are people so obsessed with this?

2 - I'm totally lost about the heights mentioned since I'm only used to the metric system.  :lol

No one is obsessed about with it.  It was just a descriptive thing reported by those of us who have actually met them.

It doesn't mean anything.  It's not a value judgement.  The fact that they are relatively short is just that: a fact.  And not a meaningful one.  But a clearly obvious one when you are in close physical proximity with them.

That's all.

It's that they for some reason appear taller than they are in real life! But I had to chime in because of the "ohhh they're all so tiny" crowd, no, about half of the band is shorter than average, and about half of the band isn't.

It's a fine line, though.  I took none offense to anything written here. I AM short(er). I don't care, there's nothing I can do about it and I don't lose a minute's sleep over that fact. Most of my friends are 6'0" or better, and I hear about it. With most of my friends, "making fun of you" is their way of saying "I love you".  In a very manly, platonic way, of course.  It's all fine.

My comment was more along the lines of the insincerity I saw with some people during the dating process.  The dating profiles that say "Looking for honest, hard-working, successful man willing to treat my kids like his own" and yet... "6'0"" was really the standard that mattered.  If that's your standard, all well and good, but own it. I wouldn't date someone I wasn't attracted to, in whatever form that takes.

It worked, though.  ;)

I go to a work conference for a couple days, and...what the heck has this thread turned into?!   :lol

But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
